Duke was born in Terryville, Claiborne Parish, Louisiana August 19, 1832. Rebecca, the daughter of Ruben and Sarah Wheelus, was born in Meriwether County, Georgia April 1, 1836. Her family moved to Claiborne Parish in the late 1840s.
Duke and Rebecca married in a Baptist Friendship Church in Terryville February 12, 1855 by Rev. Seaborn J. Fuller. Rebecca’s older sister Permelia was her witness. Terryville is ten miles north of Homer.
On August 30, 1858 they homestead 200 acres in Claiborne Parish. On May 11, 1862 Duke enlisted in Co. D, 28th Louisiana Infantry for the Confederate Army in the Civil War. They were living in Claiborne Parish when three of their children were born: Sarah, January 21, 1856, Marian Lindsay, November 25, 1858, and Elizabeth, November 3, 1860. Before their fourth child Ida Carrie was born August 19, 1865, they had moved across the state line in the area of Calhoun in Columbia County, Arkansas. This is where they were living when the census was taken on June 18, 1870.
In the early 1870’s they moved to Carolan, Arkansas. On February 2, 1878 they homestead 120 acres in Carolan. Rebecca died on March 12, 1879.
After Rebecca’s death, Duke married Amanda Euphamia Maysey on February 1, 1885. Amanda was a sister to Duke’s son-in-law Samuel Asbury Maysey. Duke’s daughter Ida Carrie had married Samuel seven months earlier on August 21, 1884. The Mayseys had moved from Chattanooga, Tennessee to Golden City in 1872.
Beside Duke and Rebecca
is buried their daughter, Lenorak, born March 24, 1874 and died September 10,
1875. Also beside them is a daughter of Duke and his second wife Amanda. She is
also named Amanda, born September 21, 1891 and died July 27, 1892. Duke's wife
Amanda is buried in the Golden City Cemetery beside their daughter Mammie and her
parents.
