Mildred Schopp's grandmother was Aunt Johnnie.  Aunt Johnnie was Phillip's daughter.  Also Mildreds husband's (who has passed away) grandfather, Phillip Schopp, came over from Germany with Phillip Schwartz and Christopher Everhart.
Mildred is not into geneology at all. Mildred and my dad [Kenneth Elwood Swartz] were the same age.  Mildred's grandmother "Aunt Johnnie"  married a McManama.  Remember, they ran the hotel in Middle Grove.

I know nothing about Phillip before he came to America.  The date 1840 -- well I had heard that he came over in 1844, but that could not be correct as he had children before that. I noticed this from grave stones.  As for the other information about being a stowaway, that came from my grandpa [Ray Swartz] and Mildred Schopp knew the same information.  Grandpa had all the information about his dad's brothers and sisters wrote down, so Mildred ask Norma Jean about it and NJ gave her the information.

Phillip Schwartz settled in Middle Grove, Mo, after stowing away on a ship headed to the USA from Germany.  Along with him was his brother John Schwartz, Phillip Schopp and Christopher Everhart. While hiding on the ship they were discovered and had to peel potatoes for their fare.  After landing on USA ground they walked to Middle Grove. This took place during or close to 1840.  He met Mary Meyes and settled about 3 miles south east of Middle Grove on land that is now on Rte Y.  His family after 162 years still has ties with Middle Grove community and the Christian Church there.

1817-1988, Middle Grove Missouri

The McManama Hotel was the home of Hiram and Mildred (known as Aunt Johnnie)  Swartz McManama.
They were the owners, operating the home as a hotel, accomodating various people of all occupations:  traveling salesmen, doctors, dentists, artists and anyone coming along looking for a place to spend the night and have a good meal.  The large oak table, reaching from one end of the large room to the other, was spread with the best food in the country.
Their younger son, Phillip, his wife, Lil, and their daughter, Martha, lived in the house long after the hotel no longer served the public.  They owned a grocery store next door, where they supplied the neighboring community with groceries and other supplies such as hardware.  He also had a barber chair in the building.  You could get your weeks supply of groceries and get your hair cut all in the same afternoon.
It was a gathering place for the country folks to get caught up on the happenings of the community at that time.  Everyone seemed to be related and one big Happy Family.
