Formed in Union County, North Carolina on May 3, 1861.

-McRae, William – Enlisted as a Private. Promoted to Lt. Col. May 2, 1862 and transferred to Field & Staff, 15th NC Infantry and participated at the battles of Seven Days, Second Manassas, Sharpsburg, and Fredericksburg. In Feb. 1863, McRae was promoted to Colonel and served in the Bristoe campaign and the battles of the Wilderness, Spotsylvania and Cold Harbor. Promoted to Brigadier General in 1864 and commanded his own brigade in the Petersburg campaign and Appomattox.  Absent from Veterans reunion in Monroe on Nov. 22, 1878. [b. Sept 9, 1834 Wilmington, NC-d. Feb. 11, 1882 Augusta, GA. Was a Civil Engineer prior to enlistment and a Railroad Superintendent after the war.]

-Jerome, Robert Porter - Resided in Mecklenburg Co, NC when he enlisted as a Private on May 3, 1861 at the age of 21. Promoted to Full Lieutenant 2nd Class on May 11, 1861. Promoted to Full Captain on May 2, 1862. Transferred on Nov. 4, 1864 from company B to company S. Promoted to Full Major on Nov. 4, 1864. Surrendered on Apr. 9, 1865 at Appomattox Court House, VA. -MEANS, Theophilus H. - Resided in Mecklenburg Co, NC when he enlisted as a Lieutenant 1st Class on May 11, 1861 at age 26. Discharged on May 2, 1862. Absent from Veterans reunion in Monroe but still living Nov. 22, 1878.

-HELMS, Leander A. - 2d Lieutenant. Absent from Veterans reunion on Nov. 22, 1878.

[b. Sep. 7, 1834-d.Sep 9, 1911. Son of Leander Helms and Margaret Rhiner. Married Hannah Elizabeth Richardson. Buried at New Hope Methodist Church Cemetery, Union Co, NC. He was a county surveyor and for many years a magistrate.]

-Houston, Alexander H.Resided in Lincoln Co, NC on May 3, 1861 when he enlisted as a Private. Transferred on Apr. 30, 1862 from company B to company S. Promoted to Full Lieutenant 1st Class on May 21, 1862. Wounded on July 1, 1862 at Malvern Hill, VA. Returned to duty on or about Dec. 30, 1862. Detail on Jan. 30, 1863 (Acting Adjutant). Promoted to Full Adjutant on Apr. 30, 1863. Surrendered on Apr. 9, 1865 at Appomattox Court House, VA. Living at Catawba Station, N.C. Nov. 22, 1878.

-McLarty, James M. - Enlisted as a Sergeant 1st Class on May 3, 1861 at the age of 21. POW on Sept.  14, 1862 at Crampton's Gap, MD. Confined on Sept. 15, 1862 at Fort Delaware, DE. Transferred on Oct. 2, 1862 at Aiken's Landing, VA. Exchanged on  Nov. 10, 1862. Returned to duty on or about Feb. 28, 1863. Promoted to Full Lieutenant 1st Class on June 17, 1864. Surrendered on Apr. 9, 1865 at Appomattox Court House, VA. Present at Veterans reunion in Monroe Nov. 22, 1878. On Reunion Committee of Co. B, 15th N.C., Aug 2, 1879.

-Cuthbertson, David Green - Resided in Union Co., NC when he enlisted as a Sergeant on May 3, 1861 at age 21. Promoted to Full Sergeant 1st Class on May 2, 1862. Wounded on Sept.  14, 1862 at Crampton's Gap, MD. Returned to duty on or about Jan. 30, 1863. Promoted to Full Lieutenant 3rd Class on June 4, 1863. Killed on Oct. 14, 1863 at Bristoe Station, VA

-Coone (Coon), Benjamin G. - Resided in Davie Co, NC when he enlisted on May 3, 1861 at the age of 19. Wounded on Apr. 16, 1862 at Lee's Mills, VA. Returned to duty on or about Dec. 30, 1862. Promoted to Full Corporal on Mar. 4, 1863. Promoted to Full Sergeant 1st Class on June 4, 1863. Wounded in right thigh on Oct. 14, 1863 at Bristoe Station, VA. Returned to duty on Jan. 26, 1864. Promoted to Full Lieutenant 2nd Class on Apr. 2, 1864. Transferred on Nov. 29, 1864. Still living Nov. 22, 1878.

-Rogers, Franklin L. - Resided in Union Co., NC when he enlisted as a Corporal on May 3, 1861 at the age of 26. Promoted to Full Lieutenant 2nd Class on May 2, 1862. Wounded on July 1, 1862 at Malvern Hill, VA. Returned to duty on or about Feb. 28, 1863. Promoted to Full Lieutenant 1st Class on June 4, 1863. Wounded on Oct. 14, 1863 at Bristoe Station, VA  (Left arm amputated). Absent wounded on or about Oct. 30, 1863.

-Alexander, William Wilson “Wilse” - Resided in Union Co., NC at time of enlistment. Enlisted as a Private on May 3, 1861 at the age of 23. Wounded July 1, 1862 at Malvern Hill, VA. Returned to duty on or about Dec. 30, 1862. Surrendered on Apr. 9, 1865 at Appomattox Court House, VA. On Reunion Committee of Co. B, 15th N.C., Present at Veterans reunion in Monroe Nov. 22, 1878. [b. May 29, 1839-d. Feb 4, 1909. Son of Moses W. Alexander, Jr. & Margaret H. Allen. He was married to Rachael E. Wolfe.] . Widow applied for Confederate Pension from Union Co, NC.

-Askew, Joseph – Enlisted as a Private on May 3, 1861. Died of wounds Feb 4, 1865 at Weldon.

-Austin, Harvey L. - Resided in Union Co., NC when he enlisted as a Private on May 3, 1861 at the age of 21.
Wounded July 1, 1862 at Malvern Hill, VA. Returned to duty on or about Dec. 30, 1862. Absent but still living Nov. 22, 1878.

-Austin, James E. - Resided in Union Co., NC when he enlisted as a Private on June 24, 1861 at the age of 23.
Transferred to Co. I, 48th NC Infantry. Killed Mar. 25, 1865 at Fort Stedman, VA.

-Austin, John E.W. - Resided in Union Co., NC when he enlisted as a Private on June 18, 1861. Wounded on  July 1, 1862 at Malvern Hill, VA. Discharged, but furnished substitute on Dec. 31, 1862. Present at Veterans reunion in Monroe Nov. 22, 1878.

-Austin, John Marcus – Corporal. Resided in Union Co., NC when he enlisted as a Private on May 3, 1861 at the age of 24. Wounded on Oct. 14, 1863 at Bristoe Station, VA. -Austin, Thomas Allen - Resided in Union Co., NC when he enlisted as a Private on May 3, 1861 at the age of 22. Transferred to Company I, 48th NC Infantry Regiment on Mar. 1, 1863. Wounded at Bristoe Station on Oct 14, 1863 and White Oak Swamp on June 15, 1864. Present at Veterans reunion in Monroe Nov. 22, 1878. Applied for Confederate Pension from Anson Co, NC.

-Austin, Wade H. - Resided in Union Co., NC when he enlisted as a Private on May 3, 1861 at the age of 23.  Died at Fort Grafton on Feb 25, 1862 from disease.

-Baker, John G. - Resided in Union Co., NC when he enlisted as a Private on May 3, 1861 at the age of 19.
Wounded in the knee on Dec. 13, 1862 at Fredericksburg, VA.
Died in hospital in Richmond, VA on Feb 12, 1863 from wounds.

-Barrino (Barinau), Frederick R. - Resided in Union Co., NC when he enlisted as a Private on May 3, 1861 at the age of 24. Wounded in left arm on Apr. 16, 1862 at Lee's Mills, VA (Dam No. 1). Absent wounded on May 30, 1862. Discharged because of wounds on Feb. 13, 1863.

-Benton, James Washington - Resided in Union Co., NC when he enlisted as a Private on May 3, 1861 at the age of 21. Wounded on July 1, 1862 at Malvern Hill, VA. Returned to duty on or about Dec. 31, 1862. Died of wounds on June 11, 1864 at Spotsylvania Courthouse.

-Beckett, James S.Corporal. Resided in Union Co., NC when he enlisted as a Corporal on May 3, 1861 at the age of 26. Detailed on Dec. 29, 1862 as a Courier. Reduced in rank to Full Private on 29 Dec. 1862. Wounded in the head in Virginia between May 5-Jun 3, 1864.  Surrendered on Apr. 9, 1865 in Appomattox Court House, VA.  Died before reunion on Nov. 22, 1878.

-Birmingham, John Reuben - Resided in Union Co., NC at time of enlistment. Transferred from Company A, 46th NC Infantry on May 1, 1863. POW on Oct. 14, 1863 at Bristoe Station, VA. Confined on Oct. 15, 1863 at Old Capitol Prison, Washington, DC. Transferred on Oct. 27, 1863 at Point Lookout, MD. Refused to be exchanged. No further record. Present at Veterans reunion in Monroe Nov. 22, 1878. [b. Feb 14, 1825-d. Apr 5, 1912. Buried at Pleasant Hill Baptist Church Cemetery. -Birmingham, Thomas - Resided in Union Co., NC when he enlisted as a Private on May 3, 1861 at the age of 23. Wounded in the arm and shoulder at Fredericksburg on Dec.13, 1862. Returned to duty on or about Dec. 31, 1862. Deserted to the enemy on Nov. 30, 1864.  Took Oath of Allegiance on or about Dec. 5, 1864. Present at Veterans reunion in Monroe Nov. 22, 1878.

-Bogan, I.C. - Resided in Union Co., NC when he enlisted as a Private on May 3, 1861. POW on or about June 16, 1862 at Warrenton, VA. Wounded on or about Sept. 15, 1862 at Warrenton, VA (leg amputated). Paroled on Sept.  29, 1862 .

-Boswell, Howell - Resided in Caswell Co, NC when he enlisted as a Private on July 15, 1862.  Absent on detail as laborer or forage master. Wounded on Sept. 14,  1862 at Crampton's Gap, MD. Returned to duty on Feb. 28, 1863.

-Brooks, Calvin H. - Resided in Union Co., NC when he enlisted as a Private on May 3, 1861 at the age of 18.
POW on Sept. 14, 1862 at Crampton's Gap, MD. Confined on or about Sept.  15, 1862 at Fort Delaware, DE. Transferred on Oct. 2, 1862 at Aiken's Landing, VA where he was exchanged on Nov. 10, 1862. Returned to duty on or about Dec. 31, 1862.

-Cehen, Jason - Born about 1838. Resided in Union Co., NC where he enlisted May 3, 1862 at age 24 for one year. He was 5’ 1” tall. On report of sick and wounded at General Hospital #2, Lynchburg with “Diarrhea.” Appears on a list of casualties (wounded) in action July 1, 1862 at Malvern Hill, VA. Killed in battle Dec. 16 1862 at Lynchburg, VA. (Record also says he died of disease at Danville, VA). Widow, Emeline Cehen received widow’s benefits Sept. 26, 1866 from Steven’s Mills, (Union County), NC. Buried at Old Lynchburg Cemetery.

-Cehen, William - Resided in Union Co., NC when he enlisted as a Private on May 3, 1861 at the age of 56. Discharged on Aug. 20, 1862 for being overage. Absent from Veterans reunion in Monroe Nov. 22, 1878. -Chapman, George - Resided in Union Co., NC when he enlisted as a Private on May 3, 1861 at the age of 21.
Died at hospital in Richmond, VA of disease on Dec 16, 1862.

-Clark, Amos T. “Amzi” - 5th Corporal. Resided in Union Co., NC when he Enlisted as a Corporal on May 3, 1861 at the age of 19. Promoted to Full Sergeant on May 20, 1862. Wounded on July 1, 1862 at Malvern Hill, VA. Returned to duty on or about Dec. 31, 1862. Died of disease at home on furlough on Mar. 14, 1863. [b. -Cuthbertson, William F. - Wounded on 16 Apr. 1862 at Lee's Mills, VA. Resided in Union Co., NC when he enlisted as a Private on Aug. 29, 1862.  Returned to duty on or about Sept.  1, 1862. POW on Sept.  14, 1862 at Crampton's Gap, MD. Confined on or about Sept.  15, 1862 at Fort Delaware, DE. Transferred on Oct. 2, 1862 at Aiken's Landing, VA. Absent without leave on Nov. 8, 1862. -Forbes (Forbis), Hugh M. - Resided in Mecklenburg Co., NC when he enlisted as a Private on May 3, 1861.

-Forbes (Forbis), John H. – Corporal; Resided in Union Co., NC when he enlisted as a Private on May 3, 1861 at the age of 26. Wounded on Sept.  17, 1862 at Sharpsburg, MD. Returned to duty on or about Jan. 30, 1863.
Promoted to Full Corporal on Dec. 1, 1863.
 Killed at Turkey Ridge in May-June 1864.

-Forbes (Forbis), Richard C. - Resided in Union Co., NC when he enlisted as a Private on May 3, 1861 at the age of 23. Wounded on Dec. 13, 1862 at Fredericksburg, VA. Was in McRae’s Company, 15th Regiment…” Died “Saturday” [June 22nd] in Waxhaw.

-Stinson, David D. - Resided in Union Co., NC at time of enlistment. POW on Oct. 14, 1863 at Bristoe Station, VA. Confined on Oct. 15, 1863 at Old Capitol Prison, Washington, DC. Transferred on Oct. 27, 1863 at Point Lookout, MD. Paroled on or about Feb. 11, 1865. Transferred on or about Feb. 12, 1865 at Cox's Landing, James River, VA. Exchanged on or about Feb. 13, 1865. Was present on Feb. 17, 1865 at Camp Lee, VA (With detachment of paroled and exchanged). Surrendered on Apr. 9, 1865 at Appomattox Court House, VA. Present at Veterans reunion in Monroe Nov. 22, 1878.

-Stinson, George M. - Resided in Union Co., NC at time of enlistment. Surrendered on Apr. 9, 1865 in Appomattox Court House, VA. Absent from Veterans reunion in Monroe but still living Nov. 22, 1878.

-Stinson, P.C. - Resided in Union Co., NC at time of enlistment. Paroled on May 23, 1865 at Charlotte, NC. Present at Veterans reunion in Monroe Nov. 22, 1878.

-Summers, Joseph - Resided in Caswell Co, NC at time of enlistment. Wounded in the hand on Dec. 13, 1862 at Fredericksburg, VA. Hospitalized on or about Dec. 14, 1862 at Farmville, VA. Died of wounds on Dec. 27, 1862 in Farmville, VA.

-Taylor, L.S. - Resided in Union Co., NC at time of enlistment. Hospitalized on Apr. 27, 1865 at Fort Monroe, VA. Released on May 31, 1865.

-Tesh, Leven – Resided in Caswell Co, NC when he enlisted in Wake Co., NC as a Private on July 15, 1862. Hospitalized on or about Aug. 15, 1862. Never rejoined company. Dropped from the rolls on Sept. 1, 1863.

-Thompson, Thomas M. - Resided in Caswell Co, NC at time of enlistment. Wounded in right thigh on Dec. 13, 1862 at Fredericksburg, VA. Returned to duty on or about Mar. 30, 1863. Wounded on May 5, 1864 at Wilderness, VA. Returned to duty on or about Oct. 30, 1864. POW  on Apr. 2, 1865 at Hatcher's Run, VA. Confined on or about Apr. 3, 1865 at Hart's Island, NY Harbor. Took Oath of Allegiance on June 20, 1865 at Hart's Island, NY Harbor.

-Utley, William J. – Resided in Union Co., NC at time of enlistment on 15 May 1864. Died before Nov. 22, 1878.

-Walters (Waters), Marion J. - Resided in Union Co., NC at time of enlistment. Wounded on May 5, 1864 at Wilderness, VA. Absent wounded on or about Oct. 1, 1864. Supposedly killed at Wilderness.

-Weaver, Henry F. – Resided in Davidson Co., NC. Transferred on Sept.  15, 1863 from company B to company C. POW on Apr. 3, 1865 at Hospital in Richmond, VA. Paroled on Apr. 18, 1865 at Richmond, VA.

-Williamson, Robert M. - Resided in Union Co., NC at time of enlistment. Died in hospital at Richmond on Oct. 22, 1862.

-Wolfe, William C. – Sergeant. Resided in Union Co., NC at time of enlistment. Wounded on Apr. 16, 1862 at Lee's Mills, VA. Promoted to Full Corporal on May 20, 1862. Returned to duty on or about Dec. 31, 1862. Promoted to Full Sergeant on or about May 31, 1864. Surrendered on Apr. 9, 1865 at Appomattox Court House, VA. Absent from Veterans reunion in Monroe Nov. 22, 1878.

-Yandle, William C. - Resided in Union Co., NC at time of enlistment. Killed at Lee’s Mill, VA (Dam. No. 1), on Apr. 16, 1862. [Married Sarah Owens on Jun 26, 1857 in Union Co, NC]

-Young, R. H. - Resided in Union Co., NC at time of enlistment. Absent in hospital on Apr. 15, 1862 at Petersburg, VA (No further record).

[1] Monroe Journal, Friday, April 27, 1923: Mr. John A. HELMS died Monday morning, April 23, at four o’clock at the home of his son, Mr. W.G. HELMS of Sandy Ridge township.  Mr. HELMS had been sick but three days.  Heart trouble was the cause of his death.  Mr. HELMS was 68 years old, and was a member of Oak Grove Baptist church.  He was also a veteran of the Civil War, having served with honor throughout the full four years.  Mr. HELMS is survived by five sons and one daughter, all living.  The sons are Messrs. B.L., J.M., W.G., and Z.V. HELMS.  The daughter is Mrs. S.A. HELMS… Funeral services were held Tuesday morning at 11 o’clock at Oak Grove Baptist church…
