Notes for DAVID L LYNE:
!DEATH: THE DEMOCRAT - FRIDAY - DEC. 25,1885 OHIO MURDERED BY
A MANIAC
>From the Linn Creek (MO) Reveille, of Dec. 10th 1885, we learn of the
murder of David Lyne, at the hands of Hiram Webster, a maniac. Mr. Lyne
lived in Camden county, Missouri, about four miles from Linn Creek, the
county seat. It
seems that Webster was a neighbor and had showed symptoms of insanity,
but he was not considered at all vicious. On the evening of the 4th inst.
he stayed all night at Lynes'. On the following morning, with other members
of the family, he arose quite early. Webster went out to the wood-pile
and after cutting some wood, returned to the house with the ax.
On entering he at once, and without any warning attacked a young lady
by the name of Kirtz, who was temporarily so journing at Mr. Lynes' at
the time, dealing a death blow on her head with the ax. The other members
of the family with
the exception of Mr. Lyne who was still in bed, fled from the house
in horror and ran for the nearest neighbors. As soon as possible a few
of the neighbors were got together and repaired to Lynes' residence. The
maniac was found in the yard
and on their approach made for the ax, which after getting through
with his murderous work, he laid down at the wood-pile. He was ordered
to halt, but would not do so, and was shot dead on the spot.
On approaching the house, Mr. Lyne was found dead in the door horribly cut and gashed. Everything in the house showed evidence of a terrible struggle. The young lady was still alive, but died the next day. Mr. Lyne was well known along the Muskingum Valley, having at various times been engaged in the coal, mercantile and steamboat business.
In 1871, he moved with his family to Missouri, and settled in
the above named county and at the time of his death was engaged in farming.
He leaves a wife and several children to mourn his untimely and horrible
demise.

EXTRACT FROM LETTER WRITTEN BY DAVID LYNE, of Camden County,Missouri
to Thomas Lyne the fifth of Slater, Missouri in 1878. Your
letter to my brother, Dr. Martin Lemuel Lyne, was handed to me to read.
We are sons of William Lyne, who with his second wife and second set of
children (we being of this set) moved in 1836 from Loudoun County,Virginia
to Morgan County,Ohio. This set was seven in number. The first
set were left in Virginia, being all married
and five in numer. In two years my father returned there on business
and to visit his children and died there.
M.L. Lyne, being a widower and myself and wife and five children came
here five years ago. Brother was since married.
Since we left Ohio, Mother and Brother have become acquainted with
two families of our name living 100 miles distant, James and William Lyne.
They speak very highly of these new-found relatives. As far
as I have learned from tradition and what I have seen that has been written,
would say that not far from the year 1660 some of this name, Lyne, emigrated
from near Bristol, England to this country and settled in Westmoreland
County,Virginia.
Thomas Duncan, whose mother was a Lyne, wrote in 1848 or 1850 that about 200 years ago two brothers came to America from near Bristol, England. One settled in Westmoreland County,Virginia. The other in Granville County, North Carolina.
The one who settled in Virginia married a Miss Mary Edwards and raised
a large family of children. To sum up the matter, will say
that between 1650 and 1665 a man named Lyne settled in Westmoreland County,Virginnia,
married Miss Edwards, and raised a large family of chiildren. His son,
Thomas, married Mary Padgett and raised seven children. His son, Thomas,
married Mary Connelly and raised eleven out of twelve children, eight are
still living (1876). As to our grandmother Lyne (Mary Padgett) her
mother was a Deskin and her grandmother a Clark. About 18 months
since I had occasion to write a short letter to the Hon. Alexander H. Stephens
of Crawfordsville, Georgia, in which I informed him that during the war
- late civil - I learned that there was a gentlement of my name living
near that place, and to show him the letter, in which I requested
information of his ancestors. He states that his father was
a mechanic, and from a bill of sale for some negroes and two indentures
of apprentices that he has of his father's old papers, he was from Westmoreland,
Virginia. His father
was named Thomas and married a Miss Morris; had a sister who married
Simon Morris. They both moved to Georgia about the commencement of the
century. His father's second wife was the daughter of Richard Asbury, who
was also from
Virginia, and was his mother. He signs his name, Thomas
A. Lyne Was born in 1814, a bachelor and had an only sister, a widow Thorton.
His father died in 1818.
Mr. Stephens said of him, "He is a gentlemen of high character and good
standing, quite wealthy before the war and still
well-to-do in wordly matters." As to the statement of Miss Lucy Foster
Lyne, I think she only goes back to the two sons of the first of the name
that settled in Granville County, N.C. I think she is also
mistaken in Leonard Lyne of Henderson,Kentucky having a son in the
navy. I have always understood he was a man advanced in years when he
married a Miss Hunter of Frankford while a member of the Legislature. As
to the one who fell overboard, I recollect many
years ago of hearing William E. Lyne of the Navy, falling overboard
at Norfolk Virginia. His widow lived in Washington D.C. and drew a pension
from the government. As to our great-uncle, James Lyne, I have seen
him twice. He had four
children. The boys were drowned in the Ohio River, so stated their
sisters, Mrs. Shaw and Mrs. Allen. As to Uncle Sandford's two sons,
William Lyne and James T. Lyne, their postoffice is Atlas, Belmont County,Ohio.Have
forgotten the name of Uncle Williams's children. Have received two
letters from Sandford, as son of one of the boys living in Coldrun, Monroe
County,Ohio. (1878).
