 Mr. and Mrs. Clyde Harrison Walters, of Camdenton, were notified Saturday forenoon of the death of their son, Clyde Elmer Walters, First Class Seaman and a Aviation Mechanic of the United States Naval Forces.

Clyde enlisted in the United States Navy August 26, 1940, and has been with the sea forces since that time.  The name of the boat to which he was attached will not be mentioned for fear of revealing information that might in some way reach the enemy.

The last time Clyde was home, was during July, 1941, when he spent a few days here with parents and friends in Camdenton.  He was born near Old Linn Creek April 20, 1920 and graduated from the Camdenton High School with the class of 1938.  (Copy of 1938 Camdenton graduating class is shown under Schools on the main page.).

The Distinguished Service Medal is awarded to Lieutenant General Charles D. Franklin, Commanding General, First United States Army.

General Franklin distinguished himself by exceptionally meritorious service to his country from June, 1953 to July, 1987.

During those 34 years, he completed numerous tours in the United States, and served in Europe, Korea, and Vietnam.  He commanded field artillery and aviation units and served as Chief of Staff, 9th Infantry Division, and Chief or Legislative Liaison at the Pentagon.

As Commanding General of the First United States Army, General Franklin developed several programs to improve mobilization preparedness and enhance the training status of First Army Reserve Components.  One of the training programs he initiated was OPERATION GOLDEN THRUST, the largest peacetime Reserve mobilization exercise since World War II.  This exercise will be the basis for long range exercise planning and is unparalleled in its importance for identifying shortfalls in the Army's mobilization and deployment systems.

General Franklin emphasized the importance of the "Total Army" --National Guard, Reserve and Active.  His efforts have contributed immeasurable to improving mutual respect between civilian employers and the Reserve Components.

A graduate of the University of Missouri at Columbia, General Franklin was commissioned a second lieutenant upon completion of the Reserve Officers Training Corps curriculum.  He attended Field Artillery School, the United States Army Command and General Staff College, and the United States Army War College.

He is an Army Aviator and has earned the Master Army Aviator designation.  His most notable decorations include the Distinguished Service Medal, Silver Star, Legion of Merit and Distinguished Flying Cross.

General Franklin's distinguished and selfless service merits lasting respect and admiration from the Army and the nation.
 

Personal Note:    Charles Dale Franklin was born December 11, 1931 in Hugo, Camden Co., MO.  He died March 16, 1992, Falls Church, VA and is buried in Arlington Cemetery in VA.  He was the son of Jewel and Ethel Shipman Franklin.

Clardy Barnett was born Feruary 27, 1808 Kentucky and died Feb 1891 probably Camden Co., Missouri.  He Married November 15, 1828 to Malinda Pemberton.  They were the parents of eleven children.  After Malinda's death Clardy married Eliza Brummett.  They had no children.

11. Felix Jefferson b. 1857 married Elizabeth Pemberton

Several of these children married and raised their families in Camden and adjoining counties of central Missouri.

Clardy served his country during the Black Hawk Indian War, serving under Capt. Abe Lincoln....he also served during the Civil War, fighting for the Union.

Information on Clardy Barnett has been found in Barren Co., Kentucky, Henry Co., Tennessee, Menard and Sangamon Counties in Illinois and Caldwell, Miller and Camden Counties in Missouri.
