Rev George Shumate came to Missouri  in late 1830's or early 1840's as a young man. He settle at what is now known
as Anderson Hollow which is east of the present location of Linn Creek. He was listed on the first jury panel called in the newly organized county of  Camden, possibly about the year 1844. Born in Ky of French ancestry, George's grandfather, Benedict (I question the Benedict, maybe he was nicknamed that, think it should be John Shumate who married Margaret Snapp) and his uncle,ran away from France to escape fighting in the army during the French  revolution, Their last name, "De La Shumate, translated means "of the Shumate".

Rev George was a farmer and a methodist minister., he buried in Hugo cemetery, camden city, MO, he married 10 Sinty Wines Jan 10, 1836, crawford, MO, she died 1847 in CA. He married second Nancy Webb. she was born aug 30,
1820,TN, and died Feb 10, 1899, Zion Cemetery, Linn Creek, Camden County, MO, (Nancy's parents are Ike Webb and Sarah.
