Rottweil-Tuttlingen Genealogy

The ROTTWEIL-TUTTLINGEN mailing list (full name below) is for individuals who are researching surnames throughout the Rottweil and Tuttlingen counties (kreis) of Baden-Wurttemberg, Germany. The list was created because a large number of us are researching some of the same towns and surnames, and we are finding increasing linkages between us. The larger Baden-Wurttemberg mailing list was simply too broad in scope for our needs. As of July 2004, the mailing list has 70 subscribers from the U.S., Germany and other parts of the world.

Rottweil and Tuttlingen encompass a region that crosses the old borders of Baden and Wurttemberg and includes a number of small- and midsize towns, villages and cities. But we've found that a large percentage of people came from this area to the U.S. and that they also intermarried throughout this region. Reviews of the church records regularly identify people from towns dotted throughout this area. Some maps of the region include:

1. How to subscribe. Send a message to
   [email protected]
   In the body of the message, type ONLY the word: subscribe and no additional text.

2. How to unsubscribe. Send a message to
   [email protected]
   In the body of the message, type ONLY the word: unsubscribe and no additional text

3. How to change to digest mode (several postings are combined and sent to you together as a single large message). This is only advised if the list becomes very active. There are two steps.
   • First, if you're already subscribed to "regular" mode (i.e., you're receiving one message for each message posted to the list), follow the instructions above for unsubscribing from the list.
   • Second, follow the subscribe instructions above, but send the message to this address instead:
     [email protected] (note the "-D" instead of "-L"). DO NOT SUBSCRIBE TO BOTH; otherwise you will receive two copies of each message posted to the list.

4. How to change to NOMAIL mode. There is no formal NOMAIL mode. (If you don't know what this means, don't worry about it.) All you have to do is follow the directions above and unsubscribe when you want the messages to stop, and then when you want them to start again, simply subscribe again.

5. If you'd like to post a message so everyone on the mailing list receives it, just send it to [email protected]. Your message will then be sent on to everyone in both mail and digest mode. You don't need to send it explicitly to both -L and -D modes.

7. To send a message to the list, once you've subscribed, create a new message in your email program, and in the TO: field, enter:
   [email protected]
   Because the email address of this list is so long, you might want to consider creating a "nickname" or "alias" for it in your email software's address book. If you don't know how to do this, contact the administrator (see #6 above), and she'll (I'll) help you do it. Include the name of your email software program.
