History
Ref. Anals Of The Forty p 31:
"Nathaniel Pettit, son of Thomas & Christian (Mellows) Pettit, was born in Exeter, N.H., in 1645 & came to Newton withhis parents. He married Mary, dau. of Elias Bayley & lived near Newton. When the Dutch captured New York & sent officers to administer the oath of allegiance, Nath. elected to stand by his Quaker faith, refusing to give the oath but he promised fealty to the dutch. He was one of the freeholders mentioned in the confirmtory patent known as the Dongan Charter granted 25 Nov. 1686, to the inhabinants & freeholders of Newton, L.I.
Some time between 1690 & 1696 Nathaniel purchased a large tract of land in New Jersey, where he & his family went to live. This land was near the Falls of Deleware (now Trenton). An old map shows the location of Nath.'s house & "Pettit's Run" a stream emptying into the Assunpink Creek. The state house is now located on this land."
