Maybe you two should compare a few notes. Do keep me informed. I am such
a snoop. I guess one has to be to do this sort of family research.

I will copy those pages and send them off to you.
The first paragraph says "This particular John Smith was born on
November 17, 1747, at Ludgate Hill near London Bridge, the son of John
and Sara Smith. Although his parents never ventured beyond the suburbs
of London, John was more venturesome. On March 10, 1772,at age 24, he
married Anna Roy, a London girl and sailed for America, settling in
Sussex County, NJ where his first six children were born... Ancaster
township where he got the crown Patentee...Here he lived until his death
on August 4, 1846 at age of 99. His wife Anna died on Sept.8, 1830 aged
    78. She started the first Methodist class in Ancaster, which developed
into Bowman church, and which displays a plaque showing her name at the
top of the list of charter members..."

Wentworth Bygones appear as separate booklets put out by the Head of
the Lake Historical Society, Hamilton, each year with a compilation of
speeches/items that were made by their group. Go to the following site
and scroll down to the end of the page that first appears..about
Hamilton OGS. At the bottom you will see the Head of the Lakes
Historical Society ..click. Once there click Publications and the
Wentworth Bygones are listed. I got up to Vol 9 as they were the ones
listing the Crown Patentees. A chap named Mike replied to my email and
sent them before I paid. That doesn't usually happen with the OGS
groups. I noticed that one of the publications with former works of long
ago has an item on Smithville.
I have tried to access the site on its own but it doesn't work unless
you go through the Hamilton site.
    http://www.hwcn.org/link/HBOGS/
    > Can I help you in some way? Maybe we have some common ancestors?
That is the question. Am I related to the Smith family through Rebecca
marrying a MILLS or am I not??
    ############################
Here is a copy of an email that was sent to me. Donna doesn't want it
sent out on to a list as she didn't compile it.Right now I am in touch
with RON COX in Beaconsfield Quebec and so I think you are too, Donna.
He is gathering data on Smiths. I am going to type up all I have on John
Mills and Rebecca Smith and send it along to him. I haven't typed it as
I don't know if they are mine BUT as Ron said it is much easier to work
things out if it is entered. Most of my info has come from Mary Lou
Bacon in grand Blanc MI. She is a genealogist and is definitely a
descendant of Rebecca smith and John Mills through their daughter Sarah
marrying a Graham. It will be some time as I do try to run the
household and work and there is a LOT of info.See if this makes sense to
you, Jim. The Rebecca might be the grand mother of my gr.gr.grandfather
John Wesley Mills born 1812 in Dundas...then again maybe she isn't!!

    Hello Linda:
Thanks very much for your e-mail. Much has happened since I posted that
query. On the same day as I made that posting, I also e-mailed a fellow
    whose
more than 2 yr. old query I had found. He is also a descendant of Jacob
    Smith
U.E. and has been seriously researching the Smith family for many years.
    He
has very generously shared his extensive Smith files with me.
In addition, he sent me some general history on this Smith family.
They arrived in the summer of 1788, from the Log Jail area of Sussex
    County,
New Jersey. They were of Germanic heritage and their surname was
    probably originally Schmidt.
The following is what I was sent along with the Smith family files.
"There was another Smith family in the Log Gaol area at the same time,
Joseph b. 1715 and Rachel, who were of English descent. (Silas Smith,
    U.E.L.
and his Descendants, R. Janet Powell, St. Catharines Public Library)
    Their descendants were:
    Benjamin, b. 29 April 1739
    Joseph, b. 13 Aug 1740
    Jeremiah, b. 13 Sep 1741
    Othniel, b. 29 May 1743
    Rebecca, b. 27 Feb. 1744
    Mary, b. 11 Oct 1746
    Samuel, b. 7 Feb. 1748
    Rachel, b. 5 mar 1752
    John, b. 22 August 1754
    Silas, b. 15 Apr 1756
    Sarah, b. 30 Oct 1759
Silas married Esther Smith, b. 1 Sep 1756: said to be his cousin,
    about
1780. Esther was the daughter of John and Sarah Smith, also of the Log
    Gaol
    area.
Because of persecution, Othniel, John, and Silas formed part of the
    group
that arrived in Niagara in July 1787.
(I also had ancestors in this group, William Mann and Henry Beamer)
John settled on lot 17 Concessions 1 and 2 Grimsby Twp. He married
    Hannah Wilcox, b. 13 August 1759, d 12 July 1838. John and Hannah are
buried in The Fifty burying ground.
Silas settled in the area of Fifty Mile Creek with his four small
    children, to
become neighbours of Levi Lewis, the Pettits et al, in what was to
    become
Saltfleet Twp., and receiving 600 acres.
    Othniel settled in Norfolk County.
An Isaac Smith, also from NJ, and believed to be a cousin or half
    brother
of the preceding three, settled in W. Flamborough in 1793.
A second John, "Little John", was also part of the 1787 emigration
    and
while initially in Grimsby, ended up in Ancaster after 1798. He was born
    13
Nov. 1747, reputedly in Ludgate, Eng., and married Anna Roy, 10 mar
    1772.
His son William married Charity Smith (daughter of Jacob Smith SR). this
family was also from the Germantown-Log Gaol area.
A still further Smith-Joseph, came as a single man in 1787, and
    settled in
Louth Twp. He married Margaret House.
It is believed the preceding three families are related.
    That's the Smith families story.
This info compilation is not my own work. Please do not quote it
    directly in a
    public forum. Thanks.
Thanks again Linda for your interest.

"John Smith who settled first in Grimsby Twp. and later in Ancaster, is believed to be a connection of Smith Family A. His ancestors were of English origin and family tradition gives John's place of birth as Ludgate Hill, London. He was born 13 Nov., 1747, married Anna Roy, 10 Mar. 1772 and shortly afterward they emigrated to New Jersey. In 1787 John & Anna, with their small family, joined other Loyalists in their treck to Canada. John was granted land in Grimsby Twp. -Lot 16, Conc. 1 & 2,. To distinguish him from another John Smith, who lived on the next farm west he was termed "Little John". During the years that John lived At The Forty he served on the Grimsby Twp. Council in 1792 and we find his name on several petitions and documents from 1789 to 1798. In that year John sold his farm to Johnathan Woolverton. One account of the transaction states that John received for 200 acres 40 LB in N.Y. Currency and threw in 5 natural apple trees to bind the bargain. Another account claims that a spotted cow was thrown in for good measure.
John Smith, with his older sons & daughters, settled in Ancaster on Lot 46, Conc. 4, where he lived until his death 4 Aug. 1846. at the age of 98 years. Anna, his wife, was born 13 Apr., 1752, died 30 Sept. 1830."
