Hackensack, city,
seat of Bergen County,
northeastern New Jersey,
a residential and commercial suburb
of New York City,
on the Hackensack River;
settled by the Dutch 1647,
incorporated as a city 1921.
A township was created here
by the British in 1693
and called
New Barbadoes until 1921,
when it was officially changed
to
Hackensack
(probably derived from the
name of a Delaware tribal group).
