On their marriage Thomas and Margaret moved into the newly brick built in. her brother Richard Carr, who was married to Thomas sister Mary lived in the Old Ash Tree Farmhouse. Margaret had seven children including James who succeeded his father as landlord of Ash Tree Inn. Her fortunes appear to have changed after the death of her husband in 1810. Why her own family the Rymers and the Carr's were not supporting her is a mystery and unusual at the time. Old people usually stayed within the family unit. Notes for Grace Eleanor Carr: Christened at Lune Street Wesleyan Chapel on 5th November 1882 Grace Eleanor Carr - spinster. She lived all her life in Preston, worked as a weaver in one of the mills. Her father, Robert, had a friend who went to the American Gold Rush and brought back a gold nugget to be made into a ring for Grace. This ring is now mine and has five seed pearls in a Victorian boat shaped feature at the middle. She was a very house proud woman, very kind and generous. When Laura Sophia Carr lived alone, and her children had married, Grace took her in and gave her a home at 69 Wildman Street Preston. She also had another house which she rented - 24 Norris Street Preston - to a couple Mr & Mrs Sharples. She died through an accident at home. Lighting the gas stove in the kitchen one day the match broke and she was covered in flames. Laura had the presence of mind to wrap her in a carpet but she died a few weeks later in hospital. The Georgian desk with bookcase (the bookcase does not belong to the desk) was Grace's property and was well polished and looked after. This became my parents property in 1954 and now passed down to me. It is in need of repair. She left property to the value of £1,722 1s 7d. She had been brought up in army barracks and lived within army life until her twenties (so we think). She would have liked to have had an university education and was quite capable of doing so, but her step mother would not hear of it she said Laura can go into service it was good enough for me it is good enough for her. It is also known that at some time in her early life she was billited out with a sergeant and his wife and lived somewhere around the Durham area. The name of the house was Wyburn this was to become the name of the bungalow that was built at Cottam by her husband Edwin later. She hated slang and bad language she once said to Robert if you cant express yourself with the English you know without degrading yourself in slang or bad language you are better not speaking at all. Everyone who knew her liked her she was come a day go a day and towards the end of her life she lived with her neice from her husbands side. Grace was very particular about housework and everything had to be in its place, whereas Laura was not very particular. If it was left to Laura the house would be mixed up. She was kind and with recollection as a child I was very fond of my grandmother. She acquired diabetes in later life but was controlled by diet. I can remember visiting her every sunday after church to be met with cauliflower and butter and I always had some. Percy Hall always liked to holiday with his aunt Laura as she would allow him to go anywhere, anytime and have his meals at all times of the day, she was so laid back. It is also recorded that she was a founding member of a religous sect called the Cooneys (I think that is the word) after a Reverent Cooney. It was run very much like the Quakers but not entirely the same. They would visit each others houses and help out if help was needed at anyone's home who belonged to the movement. Father said that she went to Australia as a companion to a lady (not Lady with a capital L) We don't know much about this side of her life. Dad also said that she was to go to South America with this same lady but when they returned back to Preston she met and married Edwin Carr six years her senior in 1909. After writing to Nora Phelps another slant on this was given. She said that she went to America (or Australia) to promote the religous sect. We do not know at this time. She, we know became a confidant and helper to a Mrs W P Twist. (Is this the lady who she travelled to Australia with?) From viewing the photographs and assessing the ages of the two women it lookes like they knew each other for a number of years at least 20. Questions to be answered: Who is this Mrs Twist was she the leader of the sect? What year did they travel to Australia? When did they return? Can we find a will of WP Twist If So was Laura a beneficiary? How did the burial plot become part of the Carr Family as there is no connection with Woodplumpton until later in the 1930s. Her first son Edwin junior was not buried at Woodplumpton although it was thought he was. Who is buried first in the grave at Woodplumpton - Is it Mrs Twist? She married David Whiteside 31 May, 1969 in Gutteridge Church, Deepdale,Preston, Lancs, son of Harry Whiteside and Lilian Rigby. Notes for Elizabeth Jean Carr: Baptismal cert 28/9/1947 at Orchard Liverpool St Preston From Birth to the age of 22 lived at 5 Lincoln Street, Preston - now demolished through compulsory purchasing by the Council. Attended Deepdale primary, and secondary school, where she met David Whiteside from the age of 5. Both attended Gutteridge Memorial Church and was married there 31.05.69. Trained as a typist/clerk for a wholesale Chemist (Woolley & Arnfield) this firm originated from Stockport and eventually was taken over by Glaxo. Worked there for 7 years from the age of 15 - 22. Next job was at BAC (Education Department) clerk Typist. During this time was married and then moved to Liverpool when David joined the Police in 1970. After a few non-descript part time posts at Liverpool ending as a GPO operator, became a housewife full time when Jennifer was born in 1975. At this time became interested in Machine Knitting and wanted to teach this subject eventually. Anne was born in 1975 at the same nursing home - Park House, Liverpool. At this time David applied and got a posting to North Yorkshire, Skipton. We moved here when Anne was six weeks old, to a Police House, No 1 North Parade Skipton. The love of Machine Knitting increased and found that a course ULCI for the subject was being taught at Preston Lancs. Each Wednesday travelled with Masie Rowley to gain this qualification. Moved to Embsay, 13 Shires Lane, in 1978. Received the 2 year qualification in 1982 and immediatly enrolled on a C&G 730 teaching course at Craven College, Skipton. During the last year of this course I applied and was awarded a Churchill Travelling Fellowship to travel to Japan (1984). The fellowship lasted for one month and in that time travelled to Nagoya, and Tokyo to study the machine knitting schools. Met Debs and Rodney Sutton who lived in Tokyo and have remained friends ever since. Taught Machine Knitting for three years at Earby and occationally Skipton. Found that the subject was beginning to lack popularity and therefore the source of extra finance was depreciating. Took a post of receptionist at Tarmac Quarries down the road from Embsay, but after approximately 4 years part time decided to return to college to 'brush up' my qualifications in the office. The course at Craven College took 2 years to complete but ended with RSA Advanced Diploma in Office Procedures. Applied for Secretary post at Airedale General Hospital and began work there on 28 May 1990. My boss was Jill Burt, the District Physiotherapist. She was replaced when she left through ill health by Enid feather who is the Physiotherapy Services Manager.
