An interesting turn of the century work with lots of lineage, letters and some source information. The McClures mentioned in Augusta County Virginia are the primary focus of the author. The McClures mentioned in other parts of the book are at best, guess work with little substantial evidence to confirm or deny the accuracy. The book also offers circumstantial evidence on surnames that intermarried with the McClures. James Alexander McClure also made an attempt to document McClures in other states besides Virginia. The letters in the book, if authentic, are entertaining and give insight to the 19th century McClure pioneer. I would recommend reading this book if you are a McClure researcher. You can also view this book at McClures of America website as I have scanned in many of its pages. James W. McCluer - 1999 Review |

AVAILABLE FOR PURCHASE The Outline Descendant Reports in the back of the book provide the reader with a 'overview' of the major McClure lines discussed in this book. Those researchers who have McClures in the Botetourt, Rockbridge and Augusta County Virginia area will find this book a solid foundation of information. There is a notable error in the book on page 207 of Annex C, "Descendants of Samuel McClure", under "3 James McClure b: Abt. 1775 in Rockbridge, VA d: 27 May, 1827 +Rebecca". This entire line of James McClure, according to one of the authors, Joseph W. McClure, was an error and should not have been put in the book. The erroneous lineage that ties this James McClure to Samuel McClure, Annex C, runs from page 207 to page 210. John McClure Senior in Annex H appears to be the major line of research and this appears where the authors stand behind their reliability of research. The authors take you on a journey from Ireland to Boutetourt County Virginia - "Following the McClures." Documentations such as wills, participation in military campaigns and explaination of past events are thoroughly covered on the John McClure Senior line of Botetourt County Virginia. An excellent buy for those tied to the family of John McClure Senior of Botetourt County, Virginia. Other McClure researchers, may have to glean and verify research information for themselves on the other six lines mentioned in the Annex. However, if you are an avid McClure surname researcher or just want to add to your genealogy library, this is a very well done book and worth the cost. In Conclusion: A fine book to purchase for the McClure surname tied to Virginia, Kentucky and Indiana. I understand there may be limited supplies, so I wouldn't wait too long or you may have to review this book at the library. UPDATE AUGUST 2001 - BOOK IS SOLD OUT James W. McCluer - 1999 Review |

THE LETTERS AND DIARIES OF
WILLIAM MACCLURE: |
||
| Editors:
Marjory
B. Hinman and Maurice R. Hitt, Jr. Availability: Published by the Broome County Historical Society Broome
County Historical Society This is a 72 page, paper back book which does exactly what the title entails, that is, publish the letters and diaries of William MacClure. The book offers insight to the life in Broome County New York just following the Revolution. Many surnames are mentioned in the book and it may behoove those with ancestors in this area to purchase the book for its documentation by William MacClure, if not for the purity of historical reference. There are Descendancy charts of this family on pages 62 - 68 by Maurice R. Hitt, Jr., C.G. Minor reports of source citations are given, so the researcher may be wanting of where 'proof' documents may be held. However, the genealogy reports make no allusions as the terms and structures used for the descriptions are generic and not meant to be source-citation bound. Much more goes on behind the scenes in this book that is revealed in its final publishing. However, I would not hesitate a recommendation to purchase this book. Excellent publishing for all that it entails. The book accomplished what what it intended. Buy it! James W. McCluer, 1999 |

Congress Catalog Card Number: 74-12854 I had the distinct pleasure of talking to Professor McCluer before he died in the early 1980s and although advanced in years, seemed a most pleasurable fellow and one determine to document his family history. The books starts out with Professor McCluer pondering his ancestry and draws the reader into the same 'query' mode by his use of interrogatories throughout the chapter. He makes some assumptions that may be unfounded, especially in the Virginia line, and offers no confirming primary source citations to back the assumptions of major importance to his line. Chapter two of his book is a whirlygig of explainations on who belongs to what family in Virginia. I would advise reading it, but would not take note of the many unfounded claims by Professor McCluer to his ancestral line. In total, the book is solid, with an appendix that gives further numbered genealogical lineages of the surnames, McCluer, La Rue, Parrill, Moore and Cox. If you are connected to this line, then I would make every effort to read this book anyway you can get a hold of it. However, the assumptions made in Chapter two and portions of Chapter one by Professor McCluer proves to be the undoing of solid genealogical research. There may be a problem with his claim that James McCluer of Richland County, Ohio was the brother of Samuel McCluer of the same county and that this James McCluer is the son of William McClure of Rockbridge County who died in 1785. Conflicting documentations proving James McClure of Rockbridge and James McCluer of Richland County may not be the same. A definite read for any McClure researcher and a very good template on how to write a family history book. Read it and glean what you can! James W. McCluer - 1999 |
