Dr. J. K. Folmar, Historian Emeritus and long time President of the Monongahela River Buffs, advised me that the original Lock 8 along the Monongahela River was built in 1889 at the mouth of Dunkard Creek. The photos above, which are dated circa 1900, show this lock and dam on both sides of the river. The Dunkard Creek photo  appears to have been taken from the lock wall in the left photo where a man is standing.

Above photos showing what the original Lock 8 area looks like 126 years after it was built, during Fall of 2015. Photos were taken by Jacob Spencer who works on the M/V JONATHAN ROBERT MURRAY.

 

The replacement lock was opened during October 1925 over three miles up river and closer to the town of Point Marion. This replacement lock is shown in the two b/w photos below and the color photo taken by Jacob Spencer shows the lock during Fall of 2015.
