Jones and Laughlin Steel Co.had a total of three different steamboats named TITAN. The first operated 1892-1899, the second 1899-1929 and the third 1930-1953.* The first and second Steamers TITAN had two smokestacks located forward of the pilothouse, as shown above. The photos above are of the TITAN built in 1899. JW mentions the TITAN built in 1899 several times in his journal including June 18, 1901, JW worked on this TITAN while at Dravosburg Marine Ways, May 1916, During September 1929 JW saw the renamed TITAN, W.L.McKINNEY, pass up stream. * A thank-you to Gary Imwalle for identification of these photos. |
The third TITAN had a single stack behind the pilothouse. This TITAN was built in 1930 and is not mentioned in JW's journal. |
There is a strong possibility that the same whistle was on both of the Steamers TITAN pictured above. It was very common to pass a whistle down from an old boat to a newer one. To hear the actual whistle of this steamboat and others click on the link below: |
