JW writes about building and repairing yawls numerous times.  The first time he writes about a yawl is March 21, 1903 when he is working on the yawls of the Steamer RAYMOND HORNER.  His last mention of a yawl is July 9, 1924 when he builds a 20 ft. yawl for Dravo Contracting Company.  The yawl shown in the photo above would be typical of yawls that JW writes about.  The simple definition of a yawl, right from "The Western Rivers Steamboat Cyclopedium," is a rowboat.
