                                 WILL OF CHARLES HOLCOMB

              I Charles Holcomb of the township of Plumstead in the county of Bucks and state  of Pennsylvania  being weak in body, but of sound  mind, memory and understanding, but fully realizing the uncertainty of this life, do make and publish as and for my last will and testament, hereby revoking all former wills, by me at any time heretofore made___ I  direct and desire that all my Real Estates shall remain unsold until the death of my wife (or widow) Hannah Holcomb, But should my wife Hannah Holcomb and my daughter Mary Holcomb think it best of my Estate to have my real Estate sold before the death of my wife hannah Holcomb,  Then my executor to sell as soon as convenient, my homestead farm containing 105 acres more or less, and my farm known as the High Farm containing 47 acres more or less, both lying along the Durham road in Plumstead Township, shall be a home for my wife Hannah Holcomb, My daughter Mary Holcomb, Mary Fenton, And Phebe Holcomb and her children, they shall occupy the house on the homestead farm in the same shape they are now living each party shall have the privelige of keeping two cows,  20 chickens, Both parties shall have hay  and pasture for the for the cows also grain to feed said cows, and chickens, also to have grain to feed 2 hogs each they may also keep a horse and carriage on said farm for their use , both parties to have what wheat they may want for flour, also potatoes, Firewood, said farm shall be rented or leased by my  hereafter named Executor, and the proceeds left after the above allowances taken out, shall be used for keeping said farm in repair , and what is not needed fir repairs shall be used for keeping said farm in repair, and what is not needed for repairs shall be divided equally between my wife (or widow)Hannah Holcomb And my daughter Mary Holcomb each and every year, Phoebe Holcomb Widow of my deceased son Charles Holcomb shall have the rent or income of my house and lot situate in the village of Greenville in Buckingham Township, or so much there of as not  needed to keep said property in repair, for the maintenance of herself and children so long as said Real Estate is not sold, after the death of my wife (Or widow) Hannah Holcomb my  Real Estate shall be sold. in case the same is not sold sooner, for   which  I  make a provision hereafter, by my hereafter named Executor as soon as convenient, the proceeds, I will and bequeath as follows, my daughter Mary Holcomb shall have the income of Five  Thousand dollars, said money shall be invested in Real Estate securities at the best rate of interest that can be obtained by getting good leins, said money to be invested by her trustee.____- I hereby  give her the privilege to choose and appointment her trustee, Mary  Fenton my granddaughter shall have the income of two thousand dollars said money, shall also be invested in Real Estate securities at the best rate of interest that can be obtained by taking good leins said money to invested by I hereby give her the privilege to choose and appointed her trustee._____ after the death of Mary Fenton the principal to be divided between Reuben, Rachel, and Charles Holcomb being the children of my deceased son Charles Holcomb I also  bequeath the Ballance of my real Estate to the above named children Reuben, Rachel and Charles Holcomb, But should my wife ( or widow ) Hannah Holcomb and my daughter Mary Holcomb think it best for my Estate to have my Real Estate sold before the death of my wife Hannah Holcomb, then in that case, I direct and desire to have my Executor to sell my Real Estate as  convenient as evidence of their desire to have said Real Estate as soon as convenient as evidence of their desire to have said Real Estate  sold they shall join my Executor in the deed of deeds, I further say that if they  Hannah Holcomb and Mary Holcomb or any one of them shall desire to have said Real Estate sold before the death of  my wife (or widow) Hannah Holcomb my Executor shall sell said Real Estate and in case my Real Estate is sold before the death of my wife ( or widow) Hannah Holcomb then the proceeds to the distributed as follows, I desire that my wife or widow Hannah Holcomb shall have the income of one  third of the purchase money said the Real Estate being  the same  to remain in said Real estate as a Dower during her life, my daughter Mary Holcomb , shall have the income or interest of three thousand dollars the same invested by her trustee as heretofore described, my Grand daughter Mary Fenton shall have the income or interest of Fifteen Hundred dollars said money to be invested by her trustee in Real Estate securities as heretofore described, after her death, the, the principal sum to be divided between, Reuben, Rachel and Charles Holcomb, being the children of my deceased son Charles Holcomb shall have the income or interest of Three Hundred dollars for the period of ten years for the maintenance of her children, Phebe Holcomb being the widow of my deceased son Charles Holcomb after the period of ten years the principal sum to go Reuben Rachel and Charles Holcomb and to be invested by their Guardian until they become Twenty one years of age.  said sum shall be invested in Real Estate securities at the  best rate of interest that can be obtained by getting good leins for the period of ten years as before mentioned._____ should then not be enough realized from the sale of my Real Estate to make the above bequests in that case, then each one to be reduced to their respective amount, and whatever ballance should remain, I will and bequeath to my Grand Children Reuben Rachel and Charles Holcomb, after the death of my wife (or widow) Hannah Holcomb  the principal sum of Dower to be distributed as follows my Grand daughter Mary Fenton shall have the income of Five Hundred dollars during her life, after her death my daughter Mary Holcomb shall have said income, should she survive Mary Fenton, but should Mary Fenton survive Mary Holcomb, then at her death the principal sum to go to my Grand Children Reuben, Rachel & Charles Holcomb, the balance of Dower to be divided into two shares my Grand children Reuben, Rachel, and Charles Holcomb, to have one Share, and my daughter Mary Holcomb the income of the other share during her life, said money to be invested by her trustee as heretofore mentioned, and after her death to go to her heirs forever._________- I will and request that my daughter Mary Holcomb  shall have all household goods that belonged to her mother, or so much thereof as she wants.  I request the remainder of my personal property to be sold as soon as convenient  after my death (so as not to interfere with tenants rights) the proceeds thereof I will and request to be distributed as follows I will and bequeath to my wife or widow -- Hannah Holcomb, Three hundred dollars first also one third of the remaining ballance the other two thirds of proceeds of personal property, I will and bequeath to my daughter Mary Holcomb or her heirs, and I do hereby appointed Aaron Fretz of Plumstead Township Bucks County To be the Executor of my last will Testament. In witness whereof I the Testator have to this my will set my hand and seal this Twenty Sixth day of July  AD One Thousand Eight Hundred and Eighty one.         Signed sealed declared by the testator in the presence of us this 26 day of July 1881                      Charles Holcomb

                Daniel Gotwals Hannah: Hannah and her sister were on the "poor school children" list of Wrightstown in 1821.  In 1809 a law was passed in Pennsylvania requiring all to be educated and the cost to be paid by the parents. If a parent could not pay, the township picked up the bill.  In 1836 a law required the township pay to educate everyone.
