Albritton H. Jean

Albritton Hopson Jean was born in September 1815 in Pulaski County, Georgia to John and Alcy Jean.

During the Indian Wars of 1836, Albritton is listed as a Private on the muster rolls of Captain William Barton Wade Dent's company of Heard County, Georgia volunteers charged with guarding the banks of the Chattahoochee River from incursions by the Creek Indians..

He is enumerated in the 1840 Heard County, Georgia census with one son under the age of 5.  He is listed in the 1850 Coahoma County, Mississippi census with his wife and five children.  He is then listed in the 1853 Panola County, Mississippi State Census with a wife and five children.

The 1860 census finds him in Columbia County, Arkansas with his second wife, Elizabeth Walkup, three of his children, and one of their children.

By 1870, he is listed in the Yell County, Arkansas census, living alone with he and Elizabeth's two children, Simeon and Martha.

He is listed in the 1880 Yell County, Arkansas census with his third wife, Elizabeth Louisa Lewis Derrick, widow of John J. Derrick, and his two children, Simeon and Martha, along with two of Elizabeth's children and one of her grandchildren.

It seems there was a bit of animosity between he and his first family in acceptance of his third wife.  Reference his Will.  He is quite adamant about the future of his children by Elizabeth Walkup.

I would like to recognize those folks who collaborated with me in bringing together the story of Albritton's family--Bill Walkup, B. J. Horne, Mary Russell, Dorothy Gallman, Sharon Chance, Linda Jobe, Virginia Jean, and Valerie Jean.  It is my pleasure to work with these wonderful people.

Notes for ALFRED BRITTON JEAN:

The story was that Britt's father remarried and Britt didn't care for his stepmother and refused to call her by name - just always referred to her as "she" or "her" and of course the nasty little boys would always try to trick him into using her name by questioning him about who he meant (my interpretation on the nasty little boys part). Dad said one day he was telling them something about "her" and they kept questioning about who was "her" and Britt said: "Her, Her, Hell you know who Her is." That got to be one of their frequent expressions. ---B. J. Horne

Once Charlie Misenhimer and Arthur Webb (who were married to sisters) were trying to find Saint's whiskey stills and turn him in to the authorities and Saint stumbled onto them. As the story goes Saint ran home and went inside and got his gun and came back outside and pointed it at Charlie and pulled the trigger, but it jammed!! Come to find out Saint's wife, Chessie, had used it the day before to shoot a hawk and it jammed but she forgot to tell Saint. I guess it just wasn't ole Charlie's time to go. ---Joe Ray Jean

She was born March 29, 1871 in Cherokee County, Georgia, and died August 05, 1932 in Yell County, Arkansas.

Notes for SIMEON ALEXANDER JEAN:

I do know one story about Sim and his first marriage. Dad says that one winter Clemmie kept "belly aching" to visit her parents, about 30 miles away by wagon in bad weather. Finally Sim loaded her up and took her to her parents and just never went back for her. Grandma told me that she had not even known about her dad's first marriage until one day when she was fairly young 12? a lady came driving up in a buggy and asked to speak to "papa."  So the truth came out.

The old Jean home place was on the left at the end of county road 508. The road use to continue on to Walnut Grove. In recent years the road fell into disuse and the county no longer maintains it. Right in front of the old Jean home place there is still a dirt road. Benton's house, where he lived most of his life, is very close to the old home place. It is no longer being used as a home, but is still standing. There is no trace of the original Jean home place left. It was built in a long line of single rooms. There were 3 rooms, then a shotgun hall through the center then 2 or 3 more rooms. It  was a fairly large home for the time. It had a porch completely across the front and set on a small knoll about 200' from the road.

---Sharon Chance, great-granddaughter of Simeon

Loise was a frustrated cowboy (my description), he always dressed like a cowboy, rode a horse and carried a whip. He really was a very good artist, I don't know whether he ever sold any paintings or not - if so, I wish I had one. In his older years he and another man from Havana used to wallpaper and do interior painting. They were doing our house, this was after I had moved away so I am telling it as it was told to me, stripping off the old paper, etc. My parents had been arguing about something during the day and when they went into the bedroom where Loise had been working that day he had left them a caricature - the walls had been stripped to the base and they weren't ready to paper yet. He had drawn a cartoon of Mother fussing at Dad and one of Dad turning Mother over his knee and spanking her. They always said they wished they had taken a picture of it. After my father died, Loise used to check on Mother ever few weeks to make sure she didn't need anything or need any errands run. I believe a Russell family lived with him. They were on my father's rural route and I remember them having the same box. The Russell family was a Mrs. Russell and her two daughters, I don't know if they were related or what ever happened to them. --B. J. Horne

Loise Duvall was a "black-market" barber when I was a small child until I was drafted into the army he cut my hair for a quarter. After I moved back 15 years later he still cut my hair but it then cost me a dollar. He had a room full of paperback books mostly westerns and I would always take a sack full of books to trade with him when I went for my Saturday haircut. The last I heard of him he was still in Yell Co. either in the nursing home in Danville or Dardanelle. He also raised Game Chickens or Fighting Cocks as they are called in some places. I don't remember ever seeing him at a rooster fight but, I am sure that plenty of the birds he sold were there --Dan

The only Loise story he has told me was when they were going to school, Loise jumped out the school house window and told the teachers he knew  more than they did. --Jeff D. Welch
