Darius Thomas Jean was born in Walton County, Georgia to John and Alcy Jean.

He more than likely left Heard County, Georgia with his older brother, John and family, in late 1846 or early 1847 traveling to DeSoto County, Mississippi.

War Department records show that Thomas D. Jean of Capt. Anderson's Co. C, 1st Battalion, Mississippi Rifles was enrolled October 30, 1847; mustered in on December 8, 1847 at Hernando, DeSoto County, Mississippi; and mustered out of the company June 18, 1848 at Vicksburg, Mississippi. The rolls do not show the soldier absent except as follows: February 29 and April 30, 1848. He was a cook in a military hospital at Tampico, Mexico. Company muster out roll dated June 28, 1848 shows him sick.

After his Mexican War service, Darius returned to Heard County, Georgia where he married Francis Louiza Modisett in 1849.  He and Francis are enumerated in the 1850 Carroll County, Georgia census, living next to his brother, Hardy Jean and family.

Whether his first two children were born in Heard or Carroll County, Georgia is uncertain.  A portion of land in this area was at times in Carroll or Heard County, then Haralson County, Georgia.

In 1855, Darius and his growing family began making the trek west toward Arkansas.  On the way, his third child, Louisa Clementine, was born in Alabama on June 12, 1855.

Darius purchased 80 acres of land on July 1, 1859 in Columbia County, Arkansas registering the purchase at the Champagnolle Land Office.

In the late 1860's, Darius moved his family to McLennan County, Texas, where he is enumerated in the 1870 census.  By 1880, they had settled in Hill County, Texas.

On October 4, 1887, Darius filed for a pension based on his Mexican War service, stating that he was disabled by reason of rheumatism and heart disease caused by hard work and exposure.

Darius died June 11, 1906 at the age of 80, and is buried in the Pleasant View Memorial Cemetery in Hill County, Texas.
