11.  EDWARD PHILIP JOLIN and ANN HENNING SILVERSIDES

the coastguard and his large family at Herne Bay in Kent

This family have not yet been linked to the main Jolin family tree, but are important because, unusually for that time, all but one of their 14 children grew to adulthood.

According to Census Returns and the registration of his death, Edward Philip was most likely to have been born in 1846. His place of birth is said by descendents to have been Jersey, and this was also stated on the Census Returns. However, there seems to be no record of the birth or baptism of an Edward Jolin on Jersey around that time. The only Edward Jolin found born around that time in Britain as a whole was an Edward Jolin born in Dorset in 1846, the son of Maria Jolin, the widow of James Jolin, dyer, of Poole - Other Jolin branches.htm. I have found no baptism or registration entry for his birth, but he appears in the 1851 Census Return aged 5, birthplace Blandford in Dorset.

This Edward was an orphan by this time and he and his sister Maria Jane were living with their half-sister Louisa Newman in Poole.

Edward Philip was married on 26 April 1874 at Holy Trinity Church in Portsea, Hampshire, to Ann Henning Silversides. Ann had been born in 1854, the daughter of George Edward Silversides, a joiner, and Mary Wareham-Livall. On the marriage certificate Edward recorded his father's name and occupation as being Edward Jolin, dyer. I have found no other Edward of either the son's or the father's generation recorded in Britain around those time periods.

At the time of his marriage Edward Philip was a seaman. His and Ann's first two children were born in Portsea, the next three in Eastry, near Dover:

1. MARIA CAROLINE -she was born in 1875. (She may have been named after Edward's mother -Maria Jolin who had died in Poole when he was two years old in 1848?) Maria Caroline did not marry and died in 1908 in Whitechapel, London, aged 33.

2. EDWARD GEORGE - born in 1877, he was married in 1900 in Herne Bay to Emily Jane Ansell. He and Emily had one son FRANK EDWARD who was born 6 September 1914 in Herne Bay and who worked as an electrical contractor. Frank married Violet Dora Font in 1939 and they had three children:

PETER EDWARD,    ROBERT FRANK,    SALLY MARGUERITE

Emily Jane died 1 December 1948 in London, aged 70. Edward George died 5 February 1955 at Canterbury in Kent, aged 78.

3. WILLIAM ALFRED - born in 1878, he married in 1909 in Herne Bay, Anne Matthews. They had one daughter, ANNIE, who was born in 1914 and who married in 1936, Eric Sullivan. William died 2 June 1955, at Chatham, aged 76. His widow died three years later in 1958, aged 72.
