"[Because] the house was worse than worthless, and there were quite a number of pupils there, and the prospect was that a school would be well supported there, it was decided to build a new house, and we went to work and built it. It was located a few rods from the old house, on land purchased from Mr. BATCHELDER. We did not think the old site a fit place to build on. At present it is the best fitted and furnished house in town, and we think the people of the district will appreciate it." Annual Report of Supt. of Schools, March 1, 1885

"Betty BOLTON was an old neighbor of mine. The BEATON farm and ours adjoined and we all attended Reed District School between 1912 and 1918, when the schoolhouse burned. Among the early teachers there were Flora ATKINS, Judith HAINES, both of Cabot, Ethel BOHONAN of Marshfield, Jessie BEATON, and Florence SMITH, my sister." -- Evelyn BAYHA (Alumni Notes)

Arecca URBAN remembers: "When I was a little girl I used to walk up through there to come to school up here in three district . . .My first year up there I had Jessie BEATON, then the next two years was Florence SMITH, Alan SMITH's daughter. The second year I was going to school, the school house burned. They think mice chewed the matches in the teacher's desk and it burned . . . Of course, that was quite a blow. There weren't many children up here -- two families, I think, or three. Two families at that time. One was the Billy SMITH family and one was our family . . .So then, long as it was Alan's daughter, we were taken over and put in the sitting room or living room of the Alan SMITH place over here where LOVELLs live . .
