TEXAS HISTORICAL SURVEY COMMITTEE MARKER Pleasant Mound "Public" Cemetery In 640 acre survey of James Jackson Beeman (1816 88), uncle by marriage of John Neely Bryan, First Settler in Dallas. Beeman came here from Illinois in 1840, helped cut first road in Trinity Bottoms; name Turtle Creek, 1841; and plat city of Dallas, 1842.
On March 8, 1848, he buried his wife Sarah Crawford Beeman on northeast corner of his land, and later allowed neighbors to bury their dead here. Cemetery's first (1887) trustees were J. W. Miller, James Pruitt, and J. H. Shannon.
Pioneers buried here set the course for greatness of Dallas.
(1972)(The dedication of the Historical Marker commemorating one of the oldest pioneer cemeteries in Dallas County was held Sunday April 23, 1972.)
NOTE: red -colored text indicates missing stones, green for those individuals associated with LANHAM, BEEMAN, BETHURUM families, blue for marker stones (North & South). Information provided by those who who have personal knowledge is in brown. NM-BEEMAN,
Sarah Crawford 15 Dec 1815 (Wife of James J. BEEMAN) NOTE: Mr. Claude B. Lewis recalls "The first time I ever went down Scyene, I was about five or six years old. Right in the middle of Scyene (which was nothing more than a wagon trail), was a grave at the east end, surrounded by a bois d'arc stockade fence, six or eight rails high. It was necessary to travel to the right around this grave. I found out later that this was Mrs. Sarah Crawford Beeman's grave the wife of James J. Beeman. Today, this grave would be placed just outside the fence on Scyene at Buckner Boulevard. |
