On this photograph, taken at the Vernon Photography Studio, 106 Kensington, Liverpool, the woman is clearly displaying her wedding ring on her left hand so it is probably a wedding photograph.

This pair of tintype, or ferrotype, photographs have been lightened as the originals are very dark. This type of photograph was patented in the mid-1850s by an American, Hamilton L. Smith. It has been suggested that the man's uniform could date from the time of the Indian Mutiny and if so, then the man could possibly be Joseph Withers.
