FLUG   FLOOK   FLUCK   FLUKE

Different spellings but all one great family

The Voyage to America :...

Jacob Flug came to America in 1750 aboard the ship Edinburg. He is believed to have taken the usual oaths at the Philadelphia Courthouse, 13, August 1750. On the passenger lists he used and "X" for his signature, although on deeds made in 1765, he signed his name in a German style script, Yacob Fluck. In 1754 Jacob Fluck "of the Province of Pennsylvania" purchased a 50 acre tract called Learning, in Middletown Valley of Fredrick County MD from Fredrick Garrison. A new warrant was issued 11, April 1760. At that time he patented Addition to Learning, 50 acres of adjacent vacant land.

On 10, April 1760, Jacob Fluck appeared in court with Philip Kefaber and others to be naturalized. Philip Kefaber was a neighbor, who had purchased Whiskey Alley from Caleb Touchstone in 1750. It was on this property that the first Union Lutheran and Reformed Church of Middletown was built.

Until 1820 "Fluck" was the most common spelling of the family name. At that time most of his MD descendants adopted the Anglicized spelling "Flook": his son Peter, in VA adopted the spelling "Fluke" about 1830. The original spelling was probably Pflug, the German word for "plow".

Jacob married Barbara (__) at some point yet unknown and they had 10 children, all of which are recorded in the records of the German Reform Church of Middletown. This family customarily used their middle names, and many records are recorded that way.

My direct line comes from Jacob and Barbara's oldest son John Fluck. John was married 3 times in his life time. His first wife Anna Eve Young married by Fredrick Co license dated April 17, 1779. Conrad Young in his will probated in 1825 left $150 to his grandson John Flook, son of John Flook and the only child of his deceased daughter Eve. John married a second time to Maria Saloma Rossel b. May 29, 1761. John and Maria Salome had 8 children. John's third wife was named Margaret Coblentz and they had no children. I have some information on John and his second wife through one of their descendants Kay Bernstein who still lives in MD. Kay has sent me pictures of the original home built by Jacob. It is no longer owned by Fluke descendants.

Next part of the line comes through John Fluck and his first wife Anna Eve's son John b. ca 1780. He married in the Reformed Church of Fredrick April 5, 1801 to Elizabeth Shroyer, witnesses by Leon Storm and Abraham Keller. John and Elizabeth moved to Montgomery Co OH about 1810. Their oldest son Jacob was born October 13, 1800. His birth date is recorded this way on his headstone, have yet to find a record of his actual birth in MD.

Jacob Fluke oldest son of John and Elizabeth moved from OH to Scott Co KY around 1827. He married Nancy (Miller) Owens b. March 23, 1793 d. October 17, 1878. Jacob passed January 12, 1888, both were laid to rest in Georgetown Cemetery Jacob and Nancy had 5 sons, John A. b January 25, 1828, Arthur b.abt 1830, Odrey M. b. November 10, 1832, James C b. February 13, 1836 and Jacob Creth b. March 23, 1841. Arthur joined the Union Army in 1861, he was in the 6th Calvary Co "C". On January 1, 1864 he re-enlisted then on his way home on April 27, 1865 he died on the steamer Sultana along with close to 2,500 other men. As far as I've been able to find out I don't believe that Arthur ever married. Odrey never married either, on the 1850 census he was listed as insane. The other 3 boys married and had families in Scott Co KY.

Jacob Creth Fluke is the next link in my family line. Jacob married Eliza Southworth on January 12, 1870. Their first child Isaac Fluke was born September 12, 1870. Then was Ina b.abt 1873, Nancy b. March 1874 and Armelda b. abt. 1877. In the 1880 census Armelda was living with Eliza's parents John and Melda Southworth. I at this time am not sure what happened to Eliza, I have not been able to find any records on her after the birth of her last child. By 1880 Jacob had remarried. His second wife was Permelia C. Adair. Jacob and Permelia had 5 children. James Benjamin b. February 1879, Sallie b. June 1882, Andrew b. December 15, 1884, Armeldia b. June 1886, Virgie N. b. May 1890.

Isaac Fluke is next.. he married Sarah Elizabeth Simons on December 15, 1895. They had 9 children. First born was Russell b. November 1896, Effie b. May 1, 1898, Ada b. April 6, 1900, Ina b. August 18, 1904, Pearl b. February 13, 1909, Geneva Mae b. March 8, 1911, Blanche b. September 5, 1913. There are 2 children born and passed between 1900-1910. Russell passed by 1910 also and I have yet to find where he was laid to rest. Isaac was in a accident in April 1913. He fell from a street car and hit his head on the curb and died a few days later from the concussion. He died April 25, 1913, his wife was 4 mo.'s pregnant with their daughter Blanche. Her nick name was Ike after her father. Effie passed at the age of 20 during child birth. All the other girls married and had families.

Geneva Mae Fluke... that's right my grandma.. is next. Geneva went by the nick name Jackie. She first married Lawrence David Miller b. December 23, 1907 in De Moion IA. They had 2 sons, Arthur Everett b. November 6, 1927 (They were not married at the time of Arthur's birth) George Washington b. March 14, 1929. Geneva and Lawrence divorced not sure at this time actual date. Geneva then married Joseph Lawrence Head b. April 21, 1906 Oldham Co KY. They had one child Blanche Marie b. December 21, 1941 in Cincinnati, OH. Grandma Geneva passed August 6, 1961 from complications from her diabetes. She was laid to rest in Georgetown Cemetery with the rest of her family.
