William Franklin Haden
by Rosemary Haden Marcum, Daughter
Will Haden was born in Ladonia, Texas on June 7, 1883, and was named for his grandfather. He was the eldest son of Joseph Benjamin and Elizabeth Holderness Haden, who were pioneers of Ladonia. Will spent his entire life in the community.
In his teens he assumed the responsibilities of a large business due to the impaired health of his father. Later, he graduated from Draughon's Business College in Paris, Texas. He was instrumental in the successful operation of The J. B. Haden & Co. firm for 28 years. After selling this company, he and his three brothers maintained a business office on the square in Ladonia. Among his many and varied business activities, he had served as president of the Farmers and Merchants State Bank and was active in its management for 16 years, and until a few months before his death. Mr. Haden served his community faithfully for 15 years as a member of the Ladonia school board. He was an active member of the First Baptist Church for 37 years and gave liberally of his time and means for its support.
On June 7, 1914, Will was married to Florein Jones, daughter of G. H. and Minnie Jones, another pioneer family of Ladonia. To this union, were born two children, W. F. Haden Jr., and Rosemany Haden Marcum.
Will Haden was a good citizen and could be counted on to do the generous and right thing in any situation. He was always willing to listen to an opinion other than his own; fair and upright in his dealings; a most dependable friend and willing at all times to assist those in neeed. He enjoyed helping young people get a start in life; often personally making loans with very little security for a college education or to begin a business. He was devoted to his family and gave of himself to provide for their needs with kindness and joy in giving.
W. F. Haden died April 24, 1953, a few months short of his 70th birthday. In death, he was survived by his widow, their two children and two grandsons, Will Roy Haden of Dallas and James Benton Marcum of Okmulgee, Oklahoma.
