Haywood and Anna were twins.

26 Aug 1932. The SS Aquitania sailed from Southampton by way of Cherbourg (France) on August 20th, arriving New York City on the 26th. Dail Holderness, age 21, was a passenger. He was born in Tarboro on the 30th of July 1909. Tarboro, his residence in the US.

12 Sep 1934. The Empress of China arrived in Victoria, British Columbia, Canada. She had sailed from Manila, Philippines on the 20th of August. Boarding at Shanghai, China on the 27th of August were James C. Braswell, father, age 65, born Battleboro. He had been in Canada earlier that year in transit. He spoke English and paid his own passage. He was a Tourist, a Transfer passenger. Occupation listed as Planter,his home as Rocky Mount, NC, USA. He had been staying at the Cathey Hotel in Shanghai. Passport was issued 9 Jun 1934 in Washington. He was a non-immigrant. Grisselle B. was the Mother, age 54, born in Durham. Her husband paid her passage.
Nancy B., daughter was 19, born in Rocky Mount - her father paid her passage.

Apparently the Empress continued on to Vancouver. On a Canadian border crossing list, the Braswells are crossed out and stamped as "Left Ship at Victoria". Their birth data was more complete - Battleboro & Durham both being in North Carolina. Exact birth dates are given but are blurred by the striking out - I read that James was born Aug 17 1868, and Grizelle on Sep 19, 1860. Nancy's was May 22, 1915.

27 Aug 1935 The Ile de France sailed from Southampton, England on 21 Aug 1935, and arrived in New York City on the 27th of August. Nancy B. Braswell, age 20, born Rocky Mount, NC, on 22 May 1915, was on the passenger list. She appeared to be traveling alone. Her home address was 128 N. Church St, Rocky Mount.

12 Jan 1937 The SS Statendam sailed from New York City via the West Indies on 9 Jan 1937 and arrived in port at San Juan, Puerto Rico on January 12th. Nancy B. Braswell, age 21, seemed to again be traveling alone - although she may have had a companion. Listed next on the manifest was Lillian Owen, age 29, also born in Rocky Mount NC on 11 Nov 1907. Lillian gave her home address as Wilmington, Del. Nancy's birthplace and date and her home address were all as before.

TARBORO - Mrs. Nancy Braswell Holderness, 80, died Monday, December 11, 1995.
She was the widow of H. Dail Holderness. She was a member of Howard Memorial Presbyterian Church, where she has served as a Deacon, Elder and Sunday school teacher and has also been recognized as the Howard Memorial Presbyterian Church Outstanding Woman. Mrs. Holderness received her B.A. Degree from Sweetbriar College. She has served on the Board of Directors of Stillman College, Presbyterian School of Christian Education, N.C. Wesleyan College Board of Visitors and Tryon Palace Commission. She has given many hours to volunteer work including the following: Tarboro Community Outreach, serving on the Board of Directors as president and as a volunteer; Edgecombe County Hospice Board of Director and as a volunteer; Meals on Wheels on the Board of Directors and as a volunteer; Girl Scout Leader; member of the Gray Ladies and member of the Colonial Dames. In 1975 Mrs. Holderness was awarded the Scouting "Silver Beaver" Award. In 1976 Tarboro Woman's Club recognized her as "Outstanding Wom an of the Year" and the Tarboro Chamber of Commerce awarded her the "Outstanding Person Award". In 1990, N.C. Wesleyan college named the Center for Innovation in Public Education the Dail and Nancy Holderness Center.
A memorial service will be 11 a.m. Thursday at Howard Memorial Presbyterian Church with the Rev. Robert E. Burns III officiating.
Survivors include daughters and sons-in-law, Zelle H. and John C. Jester of Greensboro, Nancy H. and Thomas S. Reams of Richmond; sons and daughters-in-law, The Rev. Mr. Haywood Dail and Mary D. Holderness Jr. of Durham, The Rev. Mr. James B. and Ginny W. Holderness of Dalton, Ga. and Russell B. and Mary Ann Holderness of Tarboro; 12 grandchildren and one great-grandchild.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Tarboro Community Outreach, 107 Cedar Lane, Tarboro, N.C. 27886.
The family will be receiving friends 5-8 tonight at the home of Russell B. and Mary Ann Holderness.

>From about 1663, the territory now embraced by Halifax, Edgecombe, Bertie, and others were known as Albemarle County. In 1732 a petition was presented to the Governor's Council for a new precinct south of the Roanoke River and Fishing Creek. The petition was granted, but not settled until 1741. The new precinct was called Edgecombe Precinct. Nash County was formed in 1777, so from that date all further records were kept at the county seat.
James BRASWELL, son of ROBERT BRASWELL, Jr., was active in the county both before and after 1760. At that time he purchased a lot in the new town of Tarboro (Edgecombe Deed Book O, pg. 294). This James later moved to Edgecombe County, North Carolina, and became the direct ancestor of the late James Craig BRASWELL, well-known citizen of Rocky Mount, North Carolina (Will Book 3, pg. 304).

The weary and solitary traveler was not by any means a lonely person in passing through Edgecombe. A mug of ale, served by a gentle maiden, was one of the chief assets of the Colonial Ordinary, and according to the grants issued by the Precinct Court from 1745 to 1767 Edgecombe was fairly well represented. During the year 1761 five licenses were granted for houses of entertainment alone. 1
The commands of the Precinct Court were executed by the Provost Marshal, 2 an officer corresponding to the sheriff of today. The marshal acted as a deputy to the Provost Marshal of the General Court of the Province of North Carolina, and performed almost the same duties for the Precinct Court as the latter did for the General Court. That is to say, he summoned jurymen in person or by messenger, kept the jail, held elections for burgesses, served writs in civil and criminal cases, arrested criminals and collected public taxes. 3
The first Provost Marshal or sheriff of Edgecombe was Thomas Kearney, appointed in 1739. He was accountable to no one but the Governor, received his instructions from him, and in many respects became a hired tool to promote the Governor's political ambition. That much corruption resulted from this system we shall hereafter observe. This method was made more odious by the fact that the sheriff's term of office was not definitely fixed. He might be continued in office after his appointment by the Governor, provided he gave good behavior, for an indefinite number of years.
The office of sheriff was the highest subsidiary position connected with the court, the administering of justice and the prevention of crime in the county. This being true the obligation of office and penalty for violation of oath was more severe. In addition of having to take a solemn and binding oath to execute the duties of office agreeable to law, he was heavily bonded against accepting any pecuniary offers of bribes, to show leniency of the law in dealing with prisoners or jurymen; and after 1739 he was........(next page)

"It was probably in 1758 or the year after when the court house for Edgecombe County was permanently moved from Enfield to Redmond's Old Field on Tyrancoca, now known as Cokey Swamp. The building was presumably of logs, chinked here and there with mud and making a very crude structure. It could not have been a very permanent building, for there was no special appropriation made to construct a court house at this place. In fact, there are grave uncertainties that the court house was ever completed. It is known, however, and there is conclusive evidence that the session of court for 1760 was held in the vicinity of Tyrancoca Creek. The report of the grand jury was returned from Redmond's Old Field during this year. The foreman was James Barnes, and among others who served at the first session of this court were John Calhoon, James Braswell, Richard Lewis, 1 and James Hogans. Fortunately, also, there is a record of the court proceedings held at Redmond's Old Field that year.
Among the civil cases disposed of was that of a land deal which involved some of Edgecombe's most prominent citizens at that time. The property of John P. Dew was divided by the County Court according to his will. Acting on the special committee, appointed by John Haywood, 2 Aquilla Suggs, and Thomas Hall, Justices of the Peace, to divide the estate among the heirs of John Dew according to law, were James Smith, Drew Smith, and James Hogans. The records indicate also that at this time Elisha Battle, a citizen who afterwards became very prominent in politics and church affairs, repaired to Redmond's Old Field to take an oath as a Justice of the Peace. It is supposed that Mr. Battle presided over the few remaining sessions of court at this place.
It may be inferred from that fact that the court house at Redmond's Old Field was not substantially built, and that the people in the county contemplated another site from the beginning. It is very difficult to reach any definite conclusion as to where the sessions of court were held between 1760 and 1764. "
