Joseph Schiffman KELLER 1/01, (1794 - 1866)

Details of the life of Joseph Schiffman KELLER 1/01:
BIRTH: December 26, 1794 in Rudlinghausen, Schaffhausen, Switzerland.
MARRIED: Elizabeth MEYER on December 31, 1815 in Rudlingen, Schaffhausen, Switzerland.
OCCUPATION: You know Schiff refers to boat, in German or Switz, since Rudlingen is located on a fair to middle size river. I like to think that my Keller ancestors in Switzerland may have worked transporting goods. When I looked up the statistics on Rudlingen, I see the unemployment rate is under 1%.. I can imagine that population pressure in the middle 1800s was such that moving to America was a good option. Land there was cheap & abundant.

Re: Keller Switzerland Documents, Click to read the 5 pages

Hi Charlie,
The information about Joseph Schiffmann Keller 1/01 and his family came from some documentsthat one of Aunt Helen's grandson's brought back from Switzerland. Apparently he was stationed over therein the service, and was able to obtain this information.

I've attached a copy of it. There's five pages all together. The stuff in parenthesis are translations that I got. When I was applying for Builders and Settlers of Ohio through OGS, they required me to have a formal translation done - even though most of the words were pretty easy to figure out.

Bernie (Falor 6/01) supplied some information that he got from Aunt Helen (Keller Fiser 5/03) when he interviewed her a long time ago, and I think Aunt Helen's source was Kathleen (Keller) Smith.

The following is what Bernie (Falor) gave me:

"In 1852 Joseph (1822) 1/01 and Barbara Breiter Keller (1823) brought their two sons to America, John (1849) 2/03 and Henry (1852) 2/09. Three daughters died in infancy; Anna (1852) died in Rudlingen, Switzerland; Barbara and Anna died (1868) of Diptheria. Buried in Johnson Cemetery, Elmira. Joseph Jr., Mary, Elizabeth and Jacob were born in America. Also emigrating in 1852 with Joseph were his sister Anna Barbara 2/07 and her husband Heinrich Breiter. Heinrich Breiter died Sept of 1929(?) (robbed and murdered in Cincinnati, Ohio). Anna Barbara Brieter Spiess, remarried a Spiess.

Another sister, Regula Keller Coon (18) 2/10 was married to a Mr. Coon (Kuhn) in the USA. Her son lives in Tell City, Indiana.

Another brother, Johann George 2/08 previously came to America May 22, 1851.

As far as we know the rest stayed in Switzerland. Most descendants were female, so did not continue the Keller name. There are many Kellers in the Rudlingen vicinity, but as far as we know, they are not related to our family."

"Joseph moved his family to America on 2 Jul 1852."

Photos of Keller Families
Six Pages with Links

These two photos came from Eleanor (Stevens) Rose. The photos are of the home they lived in Switzerland. The people in these twopictures are Clarence Keller, his daughter, Kathleen (Keller) Smith, and Kathleen's daughter. They had traveled to Switzerland on a couple of occasions to see the family home, and Kathleen wrote a really nice letter describingthe house and countryside to Aunt Helen, as well as directions on how to get there.

Kate (Keller) Seigneur

The location of the KELLER family home in Rudlingen, Switzerland (Schaffhausen) as written by Kathleen (KELLER) SMITH: "We arrived in Rudlingen from Zurich, crossing the Rhine river at Eglisau, a charming little town, and turning east toward the river just north of the town. This brings one to Rudlingen on the main street, and the KELLER house is on the right. The 1822 fountain (is) on the left between two houses in a gap allowing you to see the river from the fountain. If you continue on, and pass the grey school building, you have gone too far, if memory serves me.

The people speak Schwizer-Deutsch, a variety of German (and they speak proper German as they learn it in school) in which vowel sounds change. (ex.) Haus (pronounced like our word House) may come out Husli (hoosli), with the diminutive "li" meaning cute or little, on the end.

Also, towns with endings -ikon, -igen, -ingen or whatever may sound like that, were settled as round settlements, whereas those ending in -wil, -vil, -ville, were settled at crossroads. I was told that may come from the old Gothic language. Just across the Rhine river on the road to Flaach is the foundation of an old Roman fort. Another delightful picturesque town is Stein-am-Rhein, east of Schaffhausen."

Henry Keller 3/03 (1852 - 1929) home on Ottokee St., in Wauseon.

Charlie,
The second set of three photos include two homes that Henry 3/03 & Sophia Keller lived in. The first one was on Ottokee Street in Wauseon, and I think this is where Eleanor told me she was born.

The second home I never really understood entirely where it was located, but think she was telling me it was out towards where the new park is located - in that direction. Family members seen in this picture from leftare: Charles Keller 4/02 and his wife Delila (Shibler) who is holding their son (Ruben) Henry Keller, then Henry & Sophia with children in between - Lena, Clyde and Harvey; on the end are Charles Taylor and his wife, Ida May (Keller 4/01) who is holding their son, (Henry) Glenn.

The last picture is of your dad, Herb Keller 5/06 and Eleanor (Stevens) Rose 5/01 (1919 - 2009). Check out that old car in the background!!! Wonder who the boy standing behind you guys is.?.?
