Ellis Family of Preston, West Virginia

The letter ELLIS FAMILY OF WEST VIRGINIA

Lewis Harry Ellis & Pups

Lewis Harry Ellis (1865-1949)

(s/o Joseph Ridgway Ellis &

Henrietta Titlow)

The Ellis family in West Virginia

Joseph Ridgway Ellis and Henrietta Titlow moved their young family from Frederick, Maryland to Preston county, Virginia between the years 1849 and 1850. Joseph became a locomotive engineer as did his younger brother, Daniel Polhemus Ellis. Joseph was a son of Daniel Ellis (1796-1860) and Catherine Gudultig and a grandson of Joseph Ellis (1763-1823) and Rachael Polhemus (1768-1843).

Joseph's middle name of Ridgway is the maiden name of his Great Grandmother, Lucia Ridgway (1741-1774) who married John Ellis (1739-1825). The middle name of Joseph's brother, Daniel (1834-1860) was Polhemus, the maiden name of his Grandmother Rachael.

Joseph married Henrietta Titlow, Thursday evening, August 14th, 1845 at the parsonage of the G. R. Church in Frederick, Md. Joseph was 22 years old and Henrietta was 18.

Joseph was born on July 17, 1823 in Maryland and died Jan. 3, 1913 in Newburg, Preston county, West Virginia. Henrietta Titlow was born on Jan 10, 1827 in Maryland and died Dec. 19, 1892, also in Newburg.

The History of Preston County states that Joseph had been an Engineer on the railroad since 1849. His brother Daniel Polhemus Ellis was living with Joseph's family in 1860 when he was 26 years old. Daniel was born in 1834 and died August 25, 1860.

Joseph and Henrietta had six children between the years 1846 and 1865. Henrietta was 19 years old, when her first child, Charles E., was born and 38 at the birth of Lewis Harry, her last .

Their first two children, Charles and Eugene, born respectfully in 1846 and 1848, are listed having been born in Maryland. Laura, who was born in 1850 is listed as having been born in Virginia. The last three children, Joseph C. (b. 1852), Lanora (b. 1861) were born in Newburg, Preston County, Virginia. Lewis Harry (b. 1865) was born in Preston County, West Virginia.

Preston County was part of the state of Virginia until June 20, 1863. The 50 counties of West Virginia voted in favor of the state of West Virginia in March, 1863. President Lincoln proposed the state of West Virginia in November of 1862. The statehood of West Virginia was carried out very fast.

One reason for the haste was that this part of Virginia supported the Union and Lincoln wanted another Union state to support his policies. The Civil War was not over until 1865.

The Ellis Family in New England

Joseph Ridgway Ellis was born in Maryland on July 17, 1823. His GGG Grandfather, Thomas Ellis was born about 1680 in England and died in Burlington Co., New Jersey. Most of family lines leading back from Daniel Ellis (1819-1896), Joseph's father, appear to begin in England around 1700. The present generation of the Ellis family can count nine generations, in many family lines, living in America.

Lewis Harry Ellis (1865-1949) married Mary Elizabeth Harrington (1865-1931). The Harrington family has only been traced back to William Harrington who was born in 1805 in Virginia. William married Elizabeth King (1809-1897). The King family can be traced to Isacc King who was born in 1702 in Maryland.

Mary Elizabeth Harrington's mother was Sophia A. Simpson (1838-1915). Her father, William Simpson, was from Derry County, Ireland.. Her mother, Mary Ann Leach, was born in Virginia.

Henrietta Titlow (1826-1892), who married Joseph Ridgway Ellis, was born in Maryland. Her parents, John Titlow & Margareth Forger were married at The Evangelical Luthern Church in Frederick, Maryland on April 2, 1811.

On February 6, 1898, Joseph married Myrtle V. Pyles (b. abt. Sept. of 1877 in West Virginia). Joseph was 74 and Myrtle was 20 years old when they were married. They had 2 children, Rufus D. Ellis (b. November 16, 1898) and Wilford Noel Ellis (b. April 18, 1906). On the 1900 Census, Joseph, Myrtle & Rufus were living with John & Lucinda Pyles, who were probably Myrtle's parents.

Myrtle divorced Joseph sometime before 1910. In the 1910 Census, Joseph was living with his son, Lewis Harry. But Myrtle and the sons were not with Joseph. Myrtle was the wife of Harry Varner on the 1920 Census in Columbus, Ohio. Rufus & Wilford Ellis was living with the Varners. They also had a daughter, Ethyl Varner who was 4 years old on the Census. Harry Varner was a Garageman while Rufus Ellis worked as a repairman in the Garage and Myrtle is listed as a bookkeeper in the garage. In the 1930 Census, Rufus lived with his wife, Louise and son, Raymond. Rufus was a laborer in a garage in Columbus, Ohio.
