![]() ![]() ![]() Samuel Douglas Wiggins (1795-1852) & Ann Horton (b. 1799) Warwick, New York to Sylvania, Ohio ![]() |
Samuel Douglas Wiggins was born in 1795 in Warwick, Orange County, New York. The names of his parents are not known. According to a biography of his son, William, in the book, "History of Lenawee Co., Michigan", Samuel was apprenticed as a carpenter at the age of sixteen in 1811. In 1816, Samuel started a carpenter business in Warwick when he was 21 years old. About 1819, he married Ann Horton, also of Orange County, New York. ![]() Samuel and Ann had eight children. I have started web pages for each family of Wiggins Descendants. The first page begins with Samuel & Ann (Horton) Wiggins. This replaces the Descendant Book which I previously had posted here. The Names Index has a list of everyone on the individual family web pages. The names have links directly to the web page upon which the person appears. In 1823, the Wiggins family moved to Phelps Town, Ontario County, New York. Then in 1835, when Samuel was 40 years old, he and his family moved to Sylvania, Lucas County, Ohio. Samuel purchased 120 acres of land from the government. The Land Patents for the purchase are dated September 15, 1835 and were signed in Washington, DC by President Andrew Jackson's secretery. The farm was located two and a half miles east of the city of Sylvania. Samuel's name is recorded in a Poll Book of an election that was held on June 19, 1837 in Sylvania Township. He was elected as a Supervisor of Highways for District #1, on April 2, 1838 according to The History of Lucas County and Toledo, Ohio. ![]() Samuel bequeth, in his will, a half acre of land to be used as a public 'burying' ground. He requested that "My remains may be deposited therein." The place of his burial has not yet been identified. Obituaries of some descendents and other related persons have been transcribed and posted on the Obituary Page. Wiggins family letters from 1857 thru 1913.
