French-Indian Military Roster for Amelia Cty. From Peggy <[email protected]> Ishem is our ancestor's real name. Shem, Jr., his son, is probably where the dropping of the "Ishem" comes from. Since Ishem used his nickname for many things and his son was just "Shem", "Ishem" was dropped. I found "Ishem" in several places pertaining to our ancestor, which I have since misplaced. In case you didn't know this, I also had a copy of the French-Indian military roster for Amelia County, VA, listing "Shem Cook" (our ancestor) and a John Cook, presumably his brother. Since you're living in VA, I thought you would find that especially interesting. I will be copying them this Spring, so if you don't find them, I'll forward them to you then. No one seems to know where Shem came from. I assume he was not one of the early VA settlers and immigrated from England, or is one of Mordacai Cooke's many lost branches (I'm hoping for the latter!). Principally, I think I found these references in the archives of Oxford Library in Granville Co, NC. Also in a book written, I believe, by one of Shem, Jr.'s descendants, "Many Cookes and Their Broth," which I stumbled on during a visit to the Burton Memorial Library in Detroit. I also found "Ishem" ten years ago in the LDS records. Research of Cheri Loumena, FTM Webpage: born abot 1722 Virginia, died abt. 1792. Married Anne rucker abt. 1743. Ann b. abt. 1726. Lists 8 children and their spouses, except son John, no spouse. Periodical: Cook's Crier Vol. 6 (1974), in Ogden FHL #929.273 c771w pg. 557. Submission on the Shem Cooke Family by Charles O. Cooke. Shem Cooke m. Anne Rucker (daug of Peter Rucker), Orange Co., Va. before 1743. Issue: William, John, Claiborne, James, Shem, Felisha (name actually was Philisia b. 1760). Grandchildren: Roland Cooke, Shem and Ann Cooke, John, James & Mack Roberts, William Cooke, Jr. From will of Shem Cooke Sr. 1792, probate 1796. Has info. on Phillisia Cooke's family who married Jonathan Stone 1755, found in the Family Bible of Jonathan Stone. Lists marriage and issue of the families of Howell Cooke (son of Claiborne) and his son William Willis Cooke. Also from submissin above: Shem and Ann (Rucker) were married in 1743 when they were mentioned in the will of Peter Rucker, Orange Co.,Va. Issue: William, John, Claiborne, Delphia m. Armistead Roberts, Elizabeth M. ___Turpin, Felisha m. Jonathan Stone, Shem. Grandchildren in Will: Wm. Cooke Jr., Shem and Ann Cooke, John, James and Mark Roberts. Will dated 1792, Granville Co., N.C. Claiborne, Shem and Rollin or Rowland Cooke are buried near Mt. Olive Baptist Church in Franklin County, off route 56 near Middle Creek not far from Tar River.

Research of Cheri Loumena, FTM Webpage. Born abt. 1726. No other information, other than marriage to Shem and their children. Periodical: Cook's Crier, Vol. 6 (1974), in Ogden FHL #929.273 c771w. Same info as listed in notes under husband, Shem Cooke. Shem and Ann are mentioned in will of her father, Peter Rucker The IGI and Ancestral File have several entries that seem to be this Ann Rucker. I wonder about some of the dates, she seem to be too old to be the mother of some of the children listed. Seems like a generation missing: son Claiborne born in 1767, another 1772, she was born in 1726. ???? 1/15/00 Ann Rucker's parentage is well documented, primarily from probate records. I first got it from LDS sources. But for verification, here's a link to a Rucker family site with wills! Scroll down to get Peter's Will.
