Note* | Hello Pegeen, I will copy David Payne, who sent me your email message, Lane Redwine who sent me the information in the Family Group report I am sending you below and the Redwine list. Pegeen, will tell us what you have on your Redwine line from your self back down as far as you can guess at it. Tell us the names of the REDWINE's you are looking for. It is my believe that all the REDWINE's in this country to date stems from Lewis Redwine Sr. or at least that is what we call him today. I hope you will join the Redwine list and post you replies through it. Family Group Report - 7 Nov 1998 Husband: Frederick Redwine Jr. Birth: About 1784 Father: Frederick Redwine Sr. (1767-1859) Mother: Unknown Marriage: About 1802 Wife: Elizabeth Children... 1. M Child: John F. Redwine Birth: About 1803 Place: NC or VA Death: About 1880 Place: TX, Monatgue Spouse: Elenore Pritcher Marriage: About 1825 2. M Child: Matthew Redwine Birth: About 1803 Place: VA or TN Spouse: Nancy Pitcher Marriage: 20 Mar 1821 Place: IN, Bartholomew Co. 3. M Child: Issac Redwine Birth: 1806 Place: TN Spouse: Polly Pitcher Marriage: 15 Nov 1827 Place: IN, Bartholomew Co. Husband’s Notes... My best guess is that John F. Redwine was the son of Frederick Redwine, Jr., a son of Frederick Sr. a son of Michael Sr., I believe. There is a note of a land title change in Bartholomew Co., IN in the 1820s in which John F. Redwine bought land from Frederick Redwine. I learned of it via e-mail. Also, Frederick Redwine appears in the same home as John F.'s brother in the 1810 census for that same county. I should have left my research at the office so I could be more precise. I have the names of John F.'s 2 brothers at home. They each married one of the Pitcher sisters in the early 1820s. I really don't see a need for requesting further research where there is little to gain. I think it would be interesting for a historian of the region to compile a recreation of the life and times of these persons and the political, religous and economic transformatins that they endured. But I think that is probably not the work of a genealogist. I will write to the College of Arms in London to see if they find a description of the coat of arm that has been suggested. I'll let you know either way. Thanks. Lane, Here is my known line: John F. Death* | 25 February 1840 | Coweta, Georgia2 |
Burial* | 25 February 1840 | Concord Methodist Cemetery, Coweta, Georgia, 1840 - Jacob Redwine Sr. obit can be found in the Southern Recorder, Milledgeville GA issue of 26, June 1840. Maybe some one from Jacob's direct line can check it as it would be a good source record. I have been to the grave of Jacob and know for sure the marker for Jacob Sr. is located at the site of the Old abandoned Concord Methodist Cem. Off of Bobby Lee Cook Rd. West of Palmetto. In 1940 the Sarah Dickinson Chapter of the DAR marked his grave. Said to be one hundred years after his death. To get to this cemetery, starting from the intersection of Main St. or State route 29 on the South side of Palmetto GA and Bobby Lee Cook Road. Take Bobby Lee Cook Rd. West about 3 miles out and west of Palmetto. turn left on Gosdine Rd. then back to the left on a small dead end dirt rd. about .5 miles down Gosdine Rd. Turn left off Gosdine onto this dead-end dirt Rd. Go a few hundred yards to the end of the road were Mr. Murray Mayfield now lives. At this time 1996 a Mr. Murray Mayfield ( ph. 770-463-2110 ) lives in the last house on the right. The trail to the cemetery is on the west side of his property and he is keeping it in good repair. Mr. Mayfield will be happy to show the way to the cemetery if you call ahead. Mr. Mayfield does not own the property around were the grave is located. He tells me that a Mr. A. J. Cobb owns it at this time. I don't have a source but this is were I have Rowena buried: GA, Franklin, now Hart Co. Redwine Methodist Church cemetery. Newnan Age: 73 Spouse: Judge John Underwood Marriage: aft Nov 1811 Notes for Jacob Redwine Sr. RWS Jacob was said to have been born in Pittsburg PA. It is more likely he was born in PA, Philadelphia Co., Philadelphia or Northhampton were others of this family group were located. 1768 Lodwick Redwine was on the tax list of Granville Co., NC as shown in tithables taken by Robert Harris. He paid two polls which included son Jacob Redwine shown. The law at the time in NC set the white male poll at ages 16 and upward. Jacob would have reached age 16 in October 1767. 1772 - NC, Granville Co., 22 Feb 1772 Lewis RIETHWEIL (signed in German Ludwig) wrote his will in Granville County naming sons Lewis, Michael, Jacob, John, and daughter Margaret Peeler, wife of Michael Peeler. The youngest son, John, was underage at that time. His wish was that son John was to serve his brother Jacob but for one year, then to be declared free. Obviously, the son named John who was underage in 1772 was not the same Johannes who was baptized 5 May 1737. It is most likely the first son named Johannes had died (perhaps before leaving Germany, or on board ship, or after arrival in America) and the same name was given to another son born later. That was not an unusual custom and happened often. In Mittelberger's diary, he said there were no less than 32 died on the 'Osgood.' 1777 - NC, 25 Jan 1777 Jacob Reitweil and John Rietwel of Granville County sold 233 acres eastward of Michael Peelers on a branch of Shelton's Creek, being part of a large survey taken up by William Meadows and adjoining Slaughter. Proved in Aug 1777. No source for this information can be found. ----- Original Message ----- From: Imogene Bennett To: [EMAIL:][email protected][:EMAIL] Sent: Saturday, February 16, 2002 3:03 AM Subject: [REDWINE] Jacob REDWINE & Rowena RHINEHART Following up on the messages regarding wrong information floating around, another error I believe is the marriage date of 29 Feb 1776 in Montgomery Co NC posted for Jacob REDWINE to Rowena RHINEHART. Their daughter, Catherine 'Katie' REDWINE, was born 1 Mar 1775. It could be, I suppose, they never got around to getting their marriage recorded until a year after her birth. If anyone has an actual copy of the license showing that date, I would like to find a copy. I also believe Jacob & Rowena were likely married in Granville Co NC rather than Montgomery Co NC because Jacob's father was in Granville by 1760 and Jacob still there in 1777. Martha Redwine Nelson's book shows on p 48 that Katie REDWINE was the 3rd child of Jacob & Rowena. However, in her corrections & addendum dated December 1991, she has made the correction showing Katie as the first child. I have a copy of the entire book, "Journey to Pennsylvania," by Gottlieb Mittleberger. I would like to mention, if you really want to read something that makes you appreciate what your ancestors went through to get to America, it is a must for every REDWINE descendant to read that book. One Gottlieb Mittelberger was on the same ship and kept a journal of the ship's travels from Germany to the U.S. Since Johann Ludwig was on the same ship, this narrative is quite interesting. With the assistance of researcher Imogene Bennett, a transcription of chapter 1 of this journal is now available on the internet. Subject: [REDWINE] My Line
Here you go, Tex. As you can see, there are holes in my line, but I hope to fill them within the next week or two with a visit to Atlanta.
Considering the ruckus I apparently caused by my belief in documentation, it would be dishonorable of me not to provide at least something to show where I found my information. Unfortunately, Microsoft email does not allow me to use superscript footnote format (at least I don't think it does). I have substituted a parenthesis letter (A) in place of the number, with the footnote at the end of the lineage. To save space I have limited my sources to one per name or date.
I have limited this to my direct line, and not listed other marriages or other children. Incidentally, I had the priviledge of knowing my great-grandmother, Nola Redwine Hartshorn, who died when I was 19. The genealogy bug is all her fault!

(A) The only thing I have that shows Jacob Redwine, Sr. as my ancestor is Lucy Reagan Redwine's Redwine Family in Georgia book. However, I understand that there is a will for Jacob Redwine, Sr. I intend to find it.
(B) Same with Jacob Redwine, Jr. All I have to go on is Lucy's book.
Again, however, I understand that there are probate records for this man in Georgia. Time to go hunting.
(C) Death Certificate of Thomas W. Redwine, Georgia State Board of Health, Bureau of Vital Statistics, file no. 20802. States that Thomas W. Redwine's father was James O. Redwine. Copy in possession of author.
(D) My great-grandmother (Nola Nancy Redwine and granddaughter of James Oliver Redwine) said her grandmother (James' wife) was Katie Hathcock. Lucy's book also states that her name was Katie Hathcock. Thomas Redwine's death certificate says his mother was Sallie Hathcock. The 1860 Census for Campbell County lists Arcoly as Mrs. Redwine's name. The 1870 Georgia Census for Campbell County says Ann E. Although my great-grandmother knew her own grandmother and should remember her name, I really can't tell for sure what name to put down on a lineage chart at this time.
(E) There are no family records in my possession that list a date or place of death or burial, but my great-grandmother told me she used to visit James Oliver Redwine when she was little and he lived in Ben Hill, Campbell County, GA. I figure that's a good place to start looking for a grave.
(G) Birth date from tombstone of Thomas W. Redwine, Berea Christian Church (now Church of God), Hampton, Henry County, GA. Personal visit of author on numerous occassions. Photo of grave in possession of author. Place of birth from death certificate of Thomas W. Redwine.
(H) Marriage Certificate of Thomas W. Redwine and Eddia M. Barnett, Henry County Marriage Book 1885-1892, page 122, Henry County Courthouse, McDonough, GA. Copy in possession of author.

Death Certificate for Thomas Redwine Hartshorn, Sr. State of Florida, Office of Vital Statistics, certificate number 87DL1354. Copy in possession of author.

Concerning the dates for Rowena Rhinehart Redwine.
Birth, death, mar., dates comes from a January 16, 1975, No. 378 Family Puzzler's page. It says contributed by Mrs. Sarah F. White, Comer, GA from records in possession compiled by Mrs. Hattie Jordan, Cannon, GA 1938.
Jacob Redwine b. 10-12-1751, mar 2-29-1776, died 2-25-1840, mar Rowena Rhinehart, b 12-13-1755, died 7-4-1831. then it lists their children.
I cannot swear to the validity of the dates, especially the birth date of Rowena. the marriage date, and death date seem to stand up with other records. I was given this page when I first started searching in 1982.
Hope this helps,
take care

My husband is descended from Louisa Matilda REDWINE, who was born about 1816-1820 in Georgia. I have seen something somewhere that said she was the daughter of a John Marshburn Redwine, born 9 Feb. 1795 in North Carolina, died 25 Nov. 1841 in Coweta County, Georgia; and his wife, Sarah Crawford (?? - no info on her). John M. Redwine was one of the sons of Jacob Redwine, the Rev. War veteran, and Rowena Rhinehart. Is this right? Does anyone have any further info about John M. Redwine and his wife? Louisa Matilda Redwine married Allen E. BULLARD on 2 Dec. 1834 in Coweta Co., and they migrated to East Texas in the winter of 1857-58 with their children, except I believe the oldest son who was an adult stayed in Georgia. Allen E. Bullard died on the way, in Louisiana. They were part of a group of families whose names were CARROLL, HEARN, and SHELL. Apparently these families called her "Aunt Tillie." There were some relatives in this group of families who settled in Chatham Parish, Louisiana, and their descendants have kept in touch with the East Texas group to the present day. Any help tidying up this Redwine line, including Louisa Matilda's siblings, would be appreciated. I live too far away to do any on-site research but can supply info about Bullard descendants in East Texas if anyone wants it. Thank you! Barbara Hill1 |
