I just returned to town, and your e-mail was among many. I do have my e-mail blocked to people not in my e-mail list, but unless it is known to be spam, all else goes into a "suspect" list, and I check that daily, when I am here. A lot of genealogy queries end up there. In the process of changing to a new computer just over a month ago, I lost 26 incoming e-mails. I had no way of knowing who they were from, and they were all in my "suspect" list.

On to John Small. I have Small's in my lineage in New England, and Small's among the Virginia and North Carolina Quakers. My ggg-grandmother was Anna Small (1800-1874) who married Seth Burson in 1816, in Highland Co., Ohio. So, it became obvious that there were Quaker's among both lines, and I checked things out. Here are my notes and refs. on JOHN SMALL of Wales, who traveled with the Quaker migrations from Mass., southward:

Possibly related to Edward Small of New Eng. who was presumed to have left New England for Virginia - a brother? Edward's family also tied in with Quakers in New England.

The John Small located closest to the area in which we identify this Small family was transported in 1681 to Nansemund, VA by the Parker Brothers Merchants.

I have all my Small ancestry on my database at sites.rootsweb.com -- with my database "dschernick" (in the right hand column when doing a search). I update things at least once or twice a month. I do not keep notes and refs. there because of space limitations, but I do pass them on to all who contact me. And I make corrections when mistakes are made!

If you have Small's, among the Quakers, you probably also have Perisho, Bundy and Symons, and a few others. My Symons line became Quaker in the mid 1600's in Lynn, Essex, Mass., and the last Quaker in my family was a Symons g-grandfather who married out of unity in Washington State, in 1874. This was my paternal grandmother's line. I also have Quaker's on my maternal grandmother's line, which was McReynolds, and they came from Northern Ireland as Quaker's to PA in 1737.

Joseph was born in Highland County, Ohio. He married Rhoda Pierson in Henry County, Indiana. He and Rhoda are buried in Sauk County, Wisconsin. Joseph first came to Wisconsin from Indiana in approximately 1842. He had walked from Indiana to stake out a homestead claim. He staked out 320 acres on County Trunk road G. Then he walked west to Prairie Du Chein, on the Mississippi River where he filed the claim. He then walked back to Indiana. Then in 1852 or 1853, he packed up his family and moved to Wisconsin with three yoke of oxen. His youngest child, Benjamin, was the only child born in Wisconsin.

Josephine Small lived nearly twenty years following John's death. She is well remembered by all those who knew her. Her sewing was almost professional. Her hand-made wedding dress is still in the family and has been worn by family members. Baby items she made for some of her grandchildren are being preserved.
