Wilkerson, son of Anderson and Louisa Evaline (Rupard) Turpin was born 1855 in Indiana and died January 12, 1913 in Roachdale, Putnam County, Indiana. Wilkerson married (1) Anna M. Blake on December 14, 1882 (2) Caroline G. Rice on August 29, 1874 in Hendricks County, Indiana. You can see Wilkerson's tombstone at www.findagrave.com (Greenlawn Cemetery in Brownsburg, Indiana.) I have Wilkerson's obituary. Anna M. Blake was born October 16, 1855 in Parke Co., IN and died March 19, 1927. You can see her tombstone at Greenlawn Cemetery, too. Edgar Anderson Turpin, son of Wilkerson and Caroline G. (Rice) Turpin was born February 11, 1877 in Hendricks County, Indiana. Edgar married (1) Ora Barnes on June 24, 1896 in Putnam County, Indiana (2) Dora Switzer on September 30, 1909 in Montgomery County, Indiana. Edgar died February 12, 1924 in Hendricks County, Indiana and is also buried at Greenlawn Cemetery. (I'll feel better about verifying Edgar's place of death and burial after I obtain his obituary) -Linda Zapp P.S. Caroline (Rice) Turpin was my great-grandfather's sister. From: Linda Zapp Date: Sat, Apr 19, 2008 at 1:10 AM Subject: Re: Mullins Genealogy - Person Page 140 To: Ken Mullins -Linda Ken - I was worried about some information that I had gotten on Edgar Anderson Turpin, son of Wilkerson and Caroline. He didn't die in Hendricks County and now I suspect he isn't buried there either (didn't show up in findagrave listing). I did find this link on Edgar. http://obits.netsource-one.net/ (Type in Turpin for surname). It appears that Edgar, married to Dora Switzer, son of Mrs. Caroline Merean of Indianapolis (I think it should be Monrean) died Sunday, Feb 10, 1924 in Saginaw, Michigan. He moved to Saginaw in 1918 (he is in the WWI draft registration in 1918). Edgar and Dora were married in Crawfordsville. An obituary was published for Edgar in the Crawfordsville Daily Journal on February 11, 1924 Pg. 8 Col. 5 under E.A. Turpin. I'll try to get a copy. -Linda3

Note | From: Debra Patek Sent: Monday, January 20, 2003 6:29 PM To: Ken Subject: Wilkerson Turpin Hi Ken, I came across your website while searching for information about Wilkerson Turpin. Wilkerson Turpin engaged in a couple of land transactions with my ancestor, Thomas T. Anderson in Montgomery Co., KY (mid 1840s). I am interested in finding out if / how he is related, because I am looking for any clues about the possible parents of Thomas. All of the evidence I have seen suggests that Thomas T. Anderson was a grandson of Nicholas Anderson of Boonesboro, however, I don't know which son of Nicholas was his father. What sparked my interest in Wilkerson Turpin was the fact that he had a brother named Anderson Turpin. Interestingly, Nicholas Anderson's daughter, Aletha, was married to a Wilkerson (Moses Wilkerson). Do you have any idea who Wilkerson's first wife was? I may be able to find out the next time I go to Montgomery County when I look up the land record. There's lots of good research information on your website. I need to take some time to look over it more. Thanks! Debra Patek [EMAIL:]www.familypast.com[:EMAIL]
Note* | From: Bob Thompson Sent: Wednesday, April 12, 2000 9:02 PM To: Ken Mullins Subject: Wilkerson Turpin Ken, If this works, following are my notes on Sarah Thompson who married Wilkerson Turpin in Henry County Ky. Let me know what you think. 77. SARAH ELIZABETH THOMPSON, daughter of James Madison and Rebecca Shields Thompson, was born near the town of Bethlehem, Kentucky circa 1843. She was the first daughter born and appears to have been named for the two grandmothers. On 25 May 1865, Sarah married Wilkerson Turpin. This was Wilkerson's second marriage. As stated in the marriage bond, he was born in Montgomery County Kentucky. His parents were both born in Kentucky, which if true could make them among the early settlers. His father was born in Fayette County and his mother was born in Montgomery County. There is a discrepancy as to when Wilkerson was born because in the marriage bond of 1865 he listed his age as being fifty-four years which would put his birth in 1810/11. The 1870 census listed his age as sixty-seven which means that he would have been born in 1802/03. The 1795 Tax Lists included twelve Turpen(in) families, seven in Madison County, three in Lincoln County, one in Mercer County and one in Clark County. Isaac Turpin purchased 158 1/2 acres of land on the waters of Clear Creek on 21 January 1832 (Jessamine Co Ky Deed Book K, Page 20). Isaac who may be either a brother of Wilkerson or in fact Wilkerson's father, was living in Montgomery County Kentucky at the time that the purchase was made. The land was purchased from Spencer and Kitty Holloway for $1,268. There are two family files in Bruderbunds WFT CD's that seem to include this Wilkerson Turpin. The first one submitted was in Volume 2, #5227. This file indicated that Isaac Turpin married Susanna Darnell. Susanna was born on 27 February 1777 and died in 1824. The couple had four children listed; Polly who married John Thompson, Wilkerson, Anderson and Amelia who according to the WFT file, married a man named Tate. There is a marriage listed in Jessamine County for Armilda Turpin, daughter of Isaac and Susannah Turpin on 19 January 1833 The second file is on CD#4, #3118. This file indicated that Isaac was born in 1777, but that may have been a guess based on his wife's birthdate. The file showed that the children were born as follows: Polly in 1803, Wilkerson in 1805, Anderson in 1807 and Amelia in 1809. The birthdate for Wilkerson fits with the information, albeit roughly, found in the 1870 census. The fact that the dates listed are evenly spaced each two years makes them suspect. Sarah was noted by name in the various settlements of the estates of James Shields (1865) and Sarah Shields (1870). She was a part owner in a 19 acre piece of James Shields land that was distributed to his heirs in 1865. She received a one ninth share in the estate which would have gone to her mother, Rebecca Shields Thompson. The deed for her share is recorded in Jessamine County Deed Book V, page 147. In the settlement, she was noted as Bettie Turpin. Along with the share of land, she received various cash settlements as the settlement process progressed. Her husband, Wilkerson Turpin made several purchases at the estate sale of James Shields personal property. In each of the notations for the sale, he was referred to as Capt. Turpin. While it is possible that he served in the Civil War, it is more likely that his title comes from some earlier military service (if indeed he served at all). He would have been close to 60 years old at the time of the Civil War. Wilkerson Turpin was the executor of the estate of Sarah Shields which was settled in 1870. Wilkerson Turpin first shows up in the Jessamine County Deed Index of Grantees in 1857. Deed Book S, page 621, listed a deed for 102+ acres of land on Clear Creek. The land was purchased from Benjamin Bryant. In 1858, he purchased 12+ acres on a branch of Clear Creek from Thomas Cook (Book T, page 31). In 1860, Wilkerson had two transactions, he sold 29+ acres of land on Clear Creek to Thomas Shields (Jessamine Co Deed Book T, Page 510) and he purchased 163+ acres from Thomas J. Tate (by Comr) on Clear Creek and Old Frankfort Road (Book T, page 596). The final deed listed was in 1866 for 6+ acres near/on Shawney Run Road. In total, Wilkerson acquired approximately 283 acres of land. Of course, he may have sold some of those lands bought during the same period. A search of the Grantors index will reveal any land sales that he may have made. In 1870 Wilkerson and Sarah were living on a farm in Jessamine County with one son, Clarence and Sarah's brother Henry. According to Ruth Layden, Sarah later married a man named Romine and moved to Summerton, Tennessee. She also stated that Sarah died in Tennessee circa 1926. Wilkerson died sometime in 1870 before October 7th. On that date the first court records referring to him as deceased were filed. While the 1870 census listed Wilkerson as a farmer, his widow was not shown in the 1877 Atlas of Jessamine County. Perhaps by then she had already remarried and moved to Tennessee. Wilkerson Turpin's will and estate settlements are not listed in the Index of County Records. There are: Divisions and Dowers record, Inventory of Personal Estate and a Sale Bill. All are recorded in Will Book L. The Divisions and Dowers record (Will Book L, page 78-79) laid out the division of 135 acres which was divided into a 100 acre tract and a smaller 35 acre tract. Sarah E. (Thompson) Turpin was left the smaller tract which included the house. The survey noted that the property bordered on lands of Thomas Shields and Samuel Holloway. Samuel Holloway is shown on the 1877 map of Jessamine County. His property was on Clear Creek just north of the homes of several Shields families. The Personal Estate Inventory (Will Book L, page 55-58) was filed on October 11, 1870. Listed property was valued at approximately $3000 of which $636 was set aside for the use of Sarah E. Turpin and Clarence B. Turpin his "widow and infant child". Brown Young was the Administrator of Wilkerson's estate. The sale of his property was recorded in Will Book L, page 58-62 and brought in $1798. The sale was held on October 12, 1870. The estate included 4 horses, 1 bull, 2 cows and a calf, and a "lot" of hogs plus 5 other hogs. People making purchases at the sale were: his widow S. E. Turpin, H. C. Thompson, S. Shields, John Shields, Sanford Shields, G. W. Thompson and W. S. Shields. In addition, Henry C. Thompson paid $400 for land rent for one year. Because Effie B. Turpin, their daughter, was not listed in the will as Clarence was, it is assumed that she was born sometime after Wilkerson died in October. CHILDREN OF WILKERSON TURPIN AND SARAH THOMPSON TURPIN 115. Clarence B. b. ca 1866 m. d. 116. Effie B. b. ca 1870+ m. d. Ken, I ran across your information on the Rootsweb World Connect Project. I see that you have listed Wilkerson Turpin as a son of Isaac Turpin and Susanna Darnall. Wilkerson married, maybe second, to Sarah Thompson, a sister of my Great Grandfather. This branch of the Thompsons was living in Henry County at the time but had roots in Jessamine County. Would you be interested in what I have on Wilkerson? Can you tell me the source of the parentage of Wilkerson? Looking forward to hearing from you soon. Regards, Bob Thompson Prior Lake, MN2 |
