Heraldic Artist: Charles Fred Wilkes, FAS, OAE. Note that while the Blazon of the crest calls for a Knight's helmet, and this would usually be represented by a helmet afronte with the visor open, early representations of these arms in achievement form show a helmet like that used here. The name "Wylkys" is reproduced below the Motto under the Shield from a very early version of it found in England. Note that the final "s" is a "long s" and folds back over the top of the name. In this version, there are traces of "runic" from the earliest times in England following the Nordic invasions.

History:
The arms and crest of the Wilkes family were researched by Commander Charles Denby Wilkes, USNR, and published in Vevey, Switzerland in 1959, entitled "The Wilkes Chronology; An Historical and Genealogical Document" available in the Library of Congress, CS71.W679 1959. Commander Wilkes remained in Paris following the end of World War II, and was there a member of the American Legion during the time he did this research.

Charles Fred Wilkes, compiler of this genealogy, also served in World War II, and by coincidence also lived in Paris from 1980 - 1986 where he was also a member of the American Legion there during this time. His research in England and in the U.S. established the Wilkes line to which he is descended as having originated in this country by Robert Thomas Wilkes, known as Thomas, who along with his brother William was sentenced to transportation to the colonies by Cromwell following the execution of their father, John Wilkes, Mayor of Shrewsbury, Shopshire, England, for leading the defense of the city during Cromwell's siege and capture of that city in 1650. This was reported in recent years by a Mr. Charles Wilkes, professor of History at London University. This John Wilkes was a descendent of the early Wilkes bearing these arms. Charles Fred Wilkes is the 10th generation direct lineal descendant of Robert Thomas Wilkes.

Origins of the Wilkes' family:
Prior to the year 1,000 A.D., people other than the nobility did not use surnames as we know them today. The Welsh people and others did recite their genealogy, but it was a long list of ancestors, inappropriate for use as a surname. Around the time of the Norman conquest in 1066, surnames did come into wider use, but was often applied to individuals who came from someplace else. Thus the Normal name "de Wylkys" as it was then written, meant "he who comes from a family in Wiltshire".

The name "Wilkes", in Norman times spelled "Wylkys", originated with those of the name living in "Wylkyshire" now "Wiltshire". The Gaelic name "Wylk" meant "Wolf". Thus the name "Wylkyshire" meant the province of the Wolves.

About the time of the Protestant Reformation, the name was spelled both as "Wilkes" and as "Wilks" - the latter spelling being the phonetic equivalent of the true single syllable pronunciation of the name. The same name spelled "Wilkes" is also found in the Netherlands and in Germany, but there it is pronounced "Vil-kes" in two syllables.

In England, some of the name became Protestants, while others remained Catholic. Such divisions always caused much trouble among family members, and this was no exception. The Catholic members kept the spelling of "Wilkes" -- followers of tradition are loath to change things for the sake of changing. This group lived primarily near the city of Yorkshire in East-Central England. Others who became Protestant, spelled their name "Wilks" to differentiate themselves from their despised kinsman who did not follow King Henry VIII's wishes. Eventually this distinction was forgotten, but both spellings persisted.

In what is now the United States, most families farmed for a living, and were not of high education. When these family members bought or sold real estate, recorded births, marriages and deaths, they often verbally told the county recorders their names, who then recorded it as it sounded to them. If the recorders did not know better or were not told differently, they would write the name as "Wilks", spelling the name as it sounded. If they did know better, or if the family member thought to spell it for them, it was written as "Wilkes". At times the same name appears under both spelling in the same document. Thus families spelling their name either way were in fact the same family, and not two distinct families.

Early bearers of the name Wilkes (Wylkys):

John (1st) de Wylkys of Pouleshale in Wylkyshire, tem. Hen. III. A.D. 1216-1272.

John (2nd) de Wylkys, Kn., born at Pouleshall, A.D. 1258. Removed to Hertshire before 1312.

John (3rd) de Wylkys of Walton Surrey, and of Moorhouse in Yerdelaye Herts., fl. 1312.

John (4th) de Wylkys, Kn. Fought in all the King's battles in the first half of the 14th century in Gascony and in France. His arms (these arms undifferenced from their original "plain" form) were carried at Crecy-en-Ponthieu 1346. Slain the same year under the walls of Calais.⁵

The reason I'm writing to you is that I believe I saw perhaps on the Latter Day Saints (LDS) Org. site where you and your family had done some research here in Virginia and possibly Pennsylvania pertaining to Francis Wilks, his son Francis, Thomas, Isaac and James Wilks and the input was that they were born in Fredrick, VA. I have been traveling around in Virginia and have found some of these (not Francis) living in Virginia and my thoughts are leading me that they had connections in surrounding states, including PA. I believe it was also your family who said Isaac Wilks and Elizabeth Branch were married in Cumberland Co., PA in 1765.

I was hoping to see if you or any one who researched within your family has any source documentation on what was posted on the LDS site? If so, this could help us break down one of our brick walls in our family history. Also, if you have any other data which might help us find the siblings and parents of Francis Wilks b: late 1600-early 1700's would be greatly appreciate.

I have about 12,000 entires into my family tree database, much covering descendants of Thomas Wilkes who was b: abt 1633 Shrewsbury, Shropshire, England. If there is anything I can share with you I would be happy to do so.

John C. Wilks was the seventh child of John Wilks, a short sketch of whose life appears elsewhere in this history. He was born a short distance from the old homestead in Spring River township, near Verona, on December 6, 1845, ever since which time Lawrence county has been his home, and he has been one of its oldest and most respected citizens, an
advocate of every movement that has been for the betterment of conditions in the county and endeavoring at all times to be progressive and enterprising, without being radical or going to extremes. He was educated in the schools common to the time when he was a boy, living at home with his parents until the time of his marriage, which occurred January 9, 1864, when he was united with Annis Ball, a daughter of George and Elizabeth (Strawn) Ball. Her folks were Tennesseeans and she was born in Giles county, Tennessee, February 5, 1844.

After his marriage Mr. Wilks rented a farm for a time and then bought forty acres, which he cleared, meanwhile adding eighty acres to his possessions. He then rented the old homestead of his parents and after their death bought out the other heirs in 1886-7. This farm he conducted until 1913, when he sold it to his brother, George M., receiving at the
rate of ninety dollars per acre for it. He then moved to Verona, where he now resides in a pleasant, comfortable home. In addition to his farming operations he has found time for many other things to do. He served in the Civil War, being a member of Company D, Forty-sixth Missouri Infantry, enlisting at Verona and being mustered out at Springfield. He served in the militia as a substitute for Abe Davidson, of Verona.

He is a stockholder in the Lawrence County Mutual Fire Insurance Company. He also served four years as county assessor for Lawrence county. While he has generally been successful in all his operations, he has also met with misfortune, having lost his right leg in 1875, the operation being necessitated by a bone tumor started while working on a
harvester.

Politically, Mr. Wilks has the good judgment to vote for the man best fitted for the position sought, regardless of his partisan affiliations. It is this independence of thought and action that has been instrumental in the great success which he has acquired in his various pursuits. If every man would have the courage of his convictions and vote for the man
best qualified for place our political conditions would soon be greatly changed and much less would be heard about "graft," "spoils" and the like, and the country would go forward in a manner surprising to even the most optimistic.
Mr. Wilks is a consistent member of the Christian church and one of its most liberal contributors and a long-time member, having joined some twenty years ago.

Mr. and Mrs. Wilks are the parent of fourteen children; George W., born September 21, 1864 and died August 6, 1865; Henry J., born January 15, 1866, now a farmer in Spring River township; James L., born August 30, 1867, now farming near Verona; Francis M., born July 9, 1869, now living on a farm; Ira G., born January 11, 1871, now living on a farm; Noah, died in infancy, August 19, 1873; Eli, born October 11, 1875, now a painter and paperhanger at Verona; Lawrence M., born November 12, 1877, died September, 1878; Thomas B., born July 24, 1879, now living at home; Onis W., born July4, 1882, died July 23, 1883; Winfred W., born April 17, 1884, now living at home; Jay M., born March 25, 1886, is a farmer; Rosa May, born April 29, 1888, now Mrs. Clarence Garey, living on a farm in St. Clair county; Maude V., born May 21, 1890, now Mrs. Emile Reynaud, and living on a farm in Barry county. Parents who can successfully raise a family like that have much to be proud of and thankful for. They have done what they could for the community, giving it good and useful citizens, to say nothing of the material wealth they may have produced.¹

No history that might be written of Lawrence County would be anything like complete without the name of Wilks being placed near the top of the roll that should be included within its pages.     Coming to this county when it was still a part of Barry county and settling on a homestead in the woods, a complete story of their trials, their joys and varied life experiences would make interesting reading.

      "There were hardships, aye; but our hearts were strong;
           We labored with courage gay,
          For the future years and the boys and girls
           Who work for their own today."

Many of those who were instrumental in conquering the wilderness and turning a raw and undeveloped country into a field that is almost, if not quite, a paradise have gone on before and are waiting now for us to join them there as w did here. Many of us have passed the most useful portions of our lives and now we

      "Sit and dream of the bygone years,
           With all that they held in store;
          For life lies all behind us now,
           Though then it lay all before."

One of the most prominent of those early pioneers whose "life lay all before," when he arrived in this country, was John Wilks, who was born in Virginia in October, 1812, and where he grew to early manhood and secured an education and desire to try his fortunes in the far west. He was a tiller of the soil and ha confidence in his ability to wrest a livelihood from old Mother Earth in the land of the Ozarks. With this object in view he took his wife and three children and headed for the land of the setting sun. He arrived at a point about three miles north of where Verona is now built on the afternoon of May 8, 1837. Here he traded a team and wagon for a fine tract of land and proceeded t establish a home. He had come by way of Tennessee,, where he had been sidetracked for a time, but left there in March, making the trip from Tennessee to Lawrence County in something like sixty days. The first thing was to clear small piece of ground and erect a log cabin some fourteen feet square. This was not the little old log cabin in the lane, as there was no lane, but it made a home for a very good and useful pioneer, who was destined to do a great deal toward making his chosen home the center of a numerous community in the midst o a great and prosperous country. He made agriculture his life avocation and gave it his best effort. Consequently he had a fine farm and a pleasant home. Religiously he was a "Hard Shell" Baptist, as they used to say.

The maiden name of his wife was Mary Strawn. She was born and raised in Giles County, Tennessee. The date of her birth was March 15, 1815. Mr. Wilks died at Mineral Springs in February, 1881, aged about sixty-eight years, and his wife followed him on her birthday in 1885. Both lie buried in the same lot, a nice tombstone marking their last resting place.

They were the parents of eleven children, most of whom have lived to become well known and prominent citizens of the county. They are: Richard S.; Luther J., who died at the age of twenty-two years; Henry W., who was but six weeks old when the parents left Tennessee; Elizabeth, married to John Baldridge, a retired farmer living at Verona; Thomas Benton, a Civil was soldier, who died in 1862; William R., now living in Lawrence county; John C., a retired farmer living at Verona; Jane, now Mrs. G. W. Browning, the wife of a grocer at Mount Vernon; George M., a retired Spring River township farmer; Annie, the wife of Zachariah Bell, a retired farmer, and Sarah, the widow of Isaac Thomas, deceased, who was a Barry county farmer.

Thus was a goodly colony established by the arrival of this one family, whose influence and operations have been found in all parts of the county and even ha extended into other parts of the state. Not only is this true of those in the agricultural line, but their posterity has entered into and permeated many other walks of life. Wherever they go their influence is for good and, no doubt, "When the roll is called up yonder" all will be ready to answer "Here (text ends here)¹

Perhaps the mention of no name touches a tenderer chord in the hearts of those who knew him than the one which heads this sketch. He was born in Lunenburg County, Virginia, June 27, 1792. He left that state and came to Tennessee, settling in Sumner County, while he was yet a young man. Soon after his arrival in Tennessee, he gave his heart to God and united with Bledsoe's Creek Church (now Hopewell), near Castalian Springs. He was soon chosen as deacon and served this church in that capacity till God said it was enough, and took him home.

He was a man of sterling worth every way. As a citizen, he stood in the foremost rank. He was a man of sound judgment, and kept abreast of the times on all questions, which made his counsel indispensable. In the church, it could truly be said that he was a pillar, and he often rode many miles to assist churches with difficult questions. He was a yoke-fellow of Deacon John Weathered and one can hardly think of one without thinking of the other.

God blessed the labors of him and his faithful wife with an abundance of this world's goods, for all their needs. These he used to the glory of God, and was noted for his charity wherever he was known. He was the father of Elder W. M. S. Wilks. The son is honored by having such a father and the father is certainly honored by having such a son. Among his descendants are some of the noblest Bapitsts of the State. He lived to a ripe old age, being permitted to live until he stood within the threshhold of fourscore years.

Full of faith and good works, he was gathered by the reapers to the home of the blessed. He fell on sleep October 24, 1871. For more than half a century, he had been a deacon and a leader in his church. He loved his church with an undying devotion, and was never so happy as when he was talking of Jesus and his love. Noble servant of God!

TENTHLY, That my son John T. Wilkes, daughter Ann Elizabeth Wilkes and son William M. S. Wilkes, have an equal portion with my above mentioned children including all that they have received with what is hereafter to be divided.

ELEVENTHLY, It is my will and desire that all the property given to my daughters Frances A. Lewis, Malvina Scott and Lucinda Wiseman
except the four hundred dollars in each case above mentioned descend to their bodily heirs at their death with their increase.

TWELVETHLY, It is my will and desire that should my grand daughter Mary Risby Youree die without bodily heirs that her portion of property as above mentioned be divided equally with my remaining children except the four hundred dollars given to her mother.

THIRTEENTHLY, It is my will and desire that should my daughter Ann Elizabeth Wilkes marry and has bodily heirs that her portion of the
mentioned property decend to them at her death and if not it be equally divided with my above named children.

A.B.C. Dickerson and Joseph A. Jones subscribing witnesses thereto which is received by the court and ordered to be recorded. Thereupon Richard S. Wilkes the Executor named in the will appeared in open court and accepted the executions of the same. It is therefore ordered by the court that Richard S. Wilkes be appointed Executor of all and singular the goods and chattels rights and credits of John Wilkes dec'd and thereupon said Richard S. Wilkes together with his securities John T. Wilkes, William M. S. Wilkes, Frank P. Scott, John A. Jones and appeared in open court and entered into and acknowledged their bond to the State of Tennessee in the penal sum of Ten Thousand dollars conditioned according to law and said Richard S. Wilkes was duly qualified.

Family Lore says Thomas, John & Joseph Wilks, sons of John Wilks of
Shrewsbury, Shropshire, England, sentenced to transportation to Virginia,
by Cromwell, their father, John was executed.

On 26 February 1653 Ferdinando Austin of Charles City County, Virginia,
sponsored a Thomas Wilkes for transportation - Patent Book 3, Pg 369. A
Francis Wilkes was also involved in Bacon's Rebellion - Henings Statues -
Colonial Papers.

On 1704 Quit Rent Roll, New Kent County, Virginia. Deed recorded 26
August 1734 to Richard Winn, Son-in-law named wife Elizabeth. Family lore
says he was probably the son-in-law of Charles Wilkes or Thomas Wilkes,
both of whom were involved in Bacon's Rebellion. Charles Wilkes received
a land patent in Nansemond County Virginia, on 25 Oct 1695 for 820 acres
of land. Thomas Wilks could be the Thomas Wilks who died intestate in
1686 in Lancaster County.

Minor's 2nd marriage is recorded in Lunenburg Co., VA., Will Book 3,
page 252, 5 May 1786, his 3rd marriage is recorded in Lunenburg Co., VA.,
Will Book 4, page 160, 3 December 1791.

Minor settled in Lunenburg County, Virginia in the 18th century. We find
him as a grantee on a lease from a Godfrey Jones on the 6th of October
1761.

DEED: Lunenburg County, Virginia, Deed Book 13, Page 570. John Hardy Sr.
of Lunenburg County, planter, to Minor Wilks of same county, planter, 100
acres in Lunenburg County, on branches of Hounds Creek. Dec. 24,
1783.

He lived on a 500 acre tract of land lying in the South Fork of Great
Hounds Creek, adjoing the land of Edward Winn, Sally Snead, Peyton Powell
and the land belonging to the Estate of Benjamin Snead. We have not been
able thus far to find his grave but it is believed he is buried on his farm.

The Will of Minor Wilks was recorded in Lunenburg County, Virginia, Will
Book 7, Page 20A as follows:

In the name of God amen. I MINOR WILKES of Lunenburg County being old
and feble, but in sound mind and memory and knowing it is appointed for
all men once to die recommend my soul into the hands of God who gave it,
and my body to be buried in a Christian like manner and as touching my
worldly estate, which it has been pleased God to bless me with I give and
dispose in the following manner --

Item I give to my beloved wife ANN WILKES one feather bed and furniture
to her and heirs forever --

Item I lend my wife one fourth part of my cattle, sheep and hogs, during
her natural life --

Item I lend my wife my land and plantation whereon I now live during her
widowhood, and my desire is that my two daughters PATSEY WINN & SUSANNA WILKES have a right for a home on the land and plantation lent to my wife as long as they live single.

Item I give to my daughter JINCEY WINN one negro man Julas to her and her

Item I give to my daughter ANN WINN one negro man Stephen and one horse

Minor Wilkes was the son of Richard Stone Wilkes and Nancy Ann Snead. He was born in Lunenburg Co., Virginia in 1785. He died in Giles Co., Tennessee in July 1867. He was the father of 21 children. His first wife, Elizabeth Smith, had nine children and his second wife, Mary Brownlow, 20 years younger than he, had 12 children. The oldest child was born about 1806 and the youngest was born about 1846. Most of his male children left home by the time they were about 20, and several moved to other states. Thus, most of the second family of children did not even know the names of the older children. Thomas Woodson Wilks, the youngest son of the first family, settled the Minor W. Wilks estate. He could only remember the names of 9 children of the second wife. I can now understand why my father said that Sam Wilkes did not keep up with his family members the way some families do.

Minor died at the home of Thomas Woodson Wilks near Cornersville. His Will is recorded in Giles Co., Tennessee, Will Book 6, page 122.

Chester P. Wilkes who furnished this information says that Elizabeth Smith was probably a daughter of the Smith family that lived on adjoining land on Great Hounds Creek.^1,2,5
