MARRIAGE: 1st in Lunenburg Co., VA., Will Book 6, Page 135a.

3rd Probably in either Sumner or Robertson Co's.

CENSUS: 1820 Sumner Co., TN.

WILLS: Will Book 12, Page 228, Robertson Co., TN, Died intestate.

Richard owned 123 acres of land in District #11, Robertson Co., Tennessee. This land bordered on the Sumner Co., line and he owned an adjoining 120 acres in Sumner County. The Louisville & Nashville Turnpike ran on the County lines of Robertson and Sumner and therefore right through the middle of his property.

There is a community known as White House and speculation is that it derived it's name from the home of Richard Stone Wilks, Jr.. One of the homes built on the Turnpike at an early date, was a two story stately structure painted white. White houses were few and far between, along the way from Nashville to Louisville. We do not know just when it became an overnight stop, or a Stage Coach Inn, for driver's and passengers of the stage route. But it was     the driver's who termed it the first house between Louisville and Nashville painted white.     Thus giving the community it's name, "The White House." The old Inn was said to be one of the favorite stops for travelers, and it was one of the few stops where horses were changed.

Richard and his oldest son, by his second marriage, James M. Wilks, must have had untimely deaths, for letters of administration for both were granted on the same page of the 1844 November term Robertson Co., Record book. Richard was only in his 57th year and James was only 26. In as much as there had been an epidemic of "milk fever" that had taken place, in 1816, it is quite possible that something of that nature took both Richard and James life, as in just a short time another epidemic, "cholera" struck in 1849. Speculation on the part of James Wilks is that it is possible that "cholera" may have taken them.

We have not as yet found the burial place for Richard, but it must have been on him farm.

Notes

Tombstone exists with inscriptions in the Wilkes graveyard in "Charlie Hope", Brunswick Co., Virginia. Burwell Bassett Wilkes was named after a neighbor Burwell Bassett, a well-to-do plantation owner in New Kent, VA. Burwell Bassett Wilkes was a horse breeder, farmer, etc., and freed his slaves much earlier than the Civil War.

The family of Burwell Bassett Wilkes was enumerated in the 1810 census, with wife Elizabeth Gunn and all three of his living children included, including Susanna Cordle Wilkes, child of Burwell's first wife, then deceased.

Burwell Bassett Wilkes was a Sergeant in the Revolutionary War, and was serving in the Virginia Military Dist. of Ohio, St. Continental Line, 11th Regt., at Hillsborough, NC in November 1779. He was included in the list of land warrants granted beginning 8 August 1782, with 3 years service warrant no. 2075, pp 518 of Rev. War Records, Vol. 1, Va. by Gaius Marcus Brumbaugh, LC E255 .B86 Vol 1.

Susanna Cordle married Burwell Bassett Wilkes, I as his first wife on 14 May 1782 in Brunswick Co., Virginia. Joseph Wilkes was a witness, and William Cordle, father of Susanna, was Surety. Their only child, Susanna Cordle Wilkes, married Phillip Prior on 5 July 1802 in Brunswick Co., Virginia. Their son, Samuel Prior was provided for in the will of Burwell Bassett Wilkes, I.

James & Elizabeth Gunn consented to his second marriage to Elizabeth Gunn, and witnesses were William and Elijah Gunn. Surety was William Gunn, Bond made on 1 December 1787. They were married by the Rev. John King, who noted this on page W-3, Reference 17W(1)45.

In 1847, Burwell Bassett Wilkes was in Brunswick Co., Va., where he received a letter from a cousin Burwell Bassett Wilkes of Holmes Co., Mississippi. He was the son of William Minor Wilkes, and a grandson of Benjamin Wilkes, brother of Joseph Wilkes.

Burwell Bassett Wilkes, I was a noted horse breeder and racer. "Wonder" and "Chantecleer" were two of his great racers.

Elizabeth Gunn Wilkes was living with son Burwell Basset Wilkes, II when the 1840 census was taken. After the death of Burwell Basset Wilkes, I Elizabeth Gunn married Major Phillip Claiborne on 26 May 1817. She is buried in the Wilkes Burial Ground at Charlie Hope, Brunswick Co., Virginia.

His will was probated on 12 May 1815 in Brunswick Co., Virginia.

On his tombstone in the Wilkes Burial Ground in Charlie Hope, Brunswick Co., Virginia, the following is inscribed:

Burwell Wilkes, Born 4th of June, 1757, Died 31st of March 1815. this spot contains the ashes of the just who sought no honors and betrayed no trust. This truth be proved in every path be trod. An honest man, the noblest work of GOD. Davidson, Fecit.

While his full name was Burwell Bassett Wilkes, named after the noted plantation owner of New Kent Co., Virginia, he never used his middle name during his lifetime, nor is it inscribed on his tombstone. However he gave his only son the same full name with which he had been named by his father. This son provided the name Charlie's Hope to the plantation, and via the Post Office there to the entire area.

Notes

Born in Madison County, Tenn. in 1830 according to youngest son William Norman "Billy" Wilkes, of Woodruff Co., Arkansas, whose personal history appears to have the most complete and detailed information on his father. Another son, Elbert Hayes Wilkes, says he was born in Haywood Co., Tenn. in 1832, although little other information on his father was provided in his personal history, written while he practiced medicine in Little Rock, Arkansas. According to the recollections of his grandson James Sessoms Wilkes, he was born in North Carolina in 1834. The name Sessoms was in fact that of a famous legislator in North Carolina, and may refer to a maternal ancestor, possibly his mother, whose name is unknown.

First married at Somerville, Tenn., to Laura Fanny Doyle. ; Laura Fannie Doyle died in 1874, at the age of forty.

Secondly married in Madison Co., Tenn. in 1877 to Josephine Hays, daughter of Miles C. Hays, a native of South Carolina. Josephine was a native of Madison Co., and had been married previously to Bryant Gordon, with one daughter Edna. Josephine died in 1913 at Crossett, Arkansas, but is buried in Mercer, Madison Co., Tenn. in the Hays Cemetery.

Like his father Thomas, James Sessoms Wilkes took up farming as a life work, and brought his farm under a high state of cultivation. At the outbreak of the Civil War, he enlisted under General Forrest, and served most of the time West of the Mississippi river in the 32nd Arkansas Infantry, Co. A, Confederate Army, participating in various battles in Arkansas. He was captured at Helena, and was held a prisoner of war there. On one occasion he sustained a flesh wound, but recovered and was at the front throughout the period of hostilities, serving for four years.

With the close of the Civil War, he again took up farming in Tenn., and died in 1898. He is buried near Old Hatchie at Toone Station, Haywood County. James Sessoms Wilkes was a member of the Methodist Episcopal church. He was a democrat. He belonged to the Masonic Fraternity, and took an active interest in its work. He served as Master of the Mercer Masonic Lodge No. 740, which was originally chartered in 1832.

Obituary: Memphis Methodist Conference Yearbook, pp 95 by J.E. Underwood (probably of the year 1942 or 43)

Reverend Thomas Newsom Wilkes, son of James Sessoms Wilkes and Laura Fannie Doyle, was born in Hardeman County, near Whiteville, Tenn. on Nov. 5, 1858.

Reared around a family altar, in a consecrated Christian home, Brother Wilkes received life-long training for outstanding Christian living. The grandson of a Cumberland Presbyterian Minister, and the son of faithful and active parents in the Methodist Church, he was part and parcel of a strong family heritage which was full and forceful in religious experience. With joy and gratitude he wrote and talked about these priceless influences always about him.

He was educated in the Whiteville Academy, Whiteville, Tenn., and for a few years was a public school teacher before entering the work of the ministry. He was licensed to preach on April 26, 1886, and was admitted into the Memphis Annual Conference on trial in November of the same year. His first appointment was Scotts Hill Circuit in the Lexington District where, during the first year of his ministry, he recorded over two hundred conversions.

This was a glorious beginning of more than forth years of active and effective ministry in his home Conference where he served the following charges: Scotts Hill Circuit, Shiloh Circuit, Bethel Springs Circuit, Briensburg Circuit, Cottage Grove Circuit, Henry Circuit, Crossland Circuit, Gardner Circuit, Williston Circuit, LaGrange Circuit, Bartlett and Raleigh, Atwood Circuit, Finley Circuit, Dyer Circuit, Elbridge Circuit, Camden Circuit, Hollow Rock Circuit, and Decaturville Circuit. It isn't unusual to find in the report of his ministry where he recorded more than one hundred and two hundred conversions during a single year. From place to place we trace this warm hearted evangelistic pastor as he went forth preaching with faith and fervor the gospel which he believed and loved. When a small boy, it was the writer's privilege and pleasure to sit under his ministry. We have never lost out of our happy and cherished memories his radiant life and heart-warming messages in the pulpit and in the home. It was good to be in his presence and feel the warmth of his great soul.

On October 30, 1888, Brother Wilkes was happily married to Miss Texie Farris of Shiloh Circuit, which was his second charge in the conference. This devoted and faithful companion, together with five children, Judge Karl K. Wilkes of Jackson, Tenn., Thomas Newsom Wilkes of Dyersburg, Tenn., Mrs. C. H. Fowlkes, Jr., Mrs. Maggie D. Fowlkes and Miss Ruth Wilkes of Jackson, Tenn., survive him, and hold in loving memory the life and ministry of a true husband and father.

Brother Wilkes retired from the active ministry and took the super-annuate relation at the conference of 1928. He moved to his own comfortable little home in the beautiful suburbs of Jackson, Tenn., where he continued to live until in quietude and peace he went to his heavenly home on the afternoon of July 16, 1942, at the ripe age of eighty-four years.

The following tribute comes from the pen of one who knew and loved him well. "He lived very close to the Master. His daily walk reflected it. His attitude toward his fellow man bespoke it. A rich and fruitful life is ended, but the influence for good that was wielded by that life will live on."

The funeral was conducted in the First Methodist Church, Jackson, Tenn., on the afternoon of July 18, 1942, by the writer and Reverend O.C.Wrather, pastor of the Hays Avenue Methodist Church in Jackson. Internment was in the family lot in Alamo, Tenn.

Notes

Was a sheriff in Woodruff Co., Arkansas, and later commissioner of Mines for the same state.

From: "Centennial History of Arkansas," pub. by S.J.Clarke Pub. Co., 1922, Vol. 2, pp 639-640.

William N. Wilkes of Augusta, who is filling the office of sheriff in Woodruff co. and is making an excellent official by the prompt, capable and fearless manner in which he discharges his duties, was born in Madison Co., Tenn. near Mercer on the 21st of July, 1885, a son of J.S. and Josephine (Hayes) Wilkes, both of whom were also natives of Madison Co., the latter being a daughter of Miles C. Hayes, who was a native of South Carolina.

Miles C. Hayes, a native of South Carolina, constructed and operated a flour mill in West Tennessee which was the first mill of the kind in the neighborhood and most of the machinery which constituted its equipment was made by hand. He also owned land in that locality and had a number of slaves.

The grandfather in the paternal line was Thomas Wilkes, also a native of South Carolina (WRONG!!!), whence he removed to Tennessee and there engaged in farming.

His son, J.S. Wilkes, likewise took up farming as a life work, and brought his farm under a high state of cultivation. At the outbreak of the Civil war he enlisted under General Forrest and served most of the time west of the Mississippi river, participating in various battles in Arkansas. He was captured at Helena and held a prisoner of war there. On one occasion he sustained a flesh wound, but recovered and was at the front throughout the period of hostilities. With the close of the war he again took up farming in Tennessee and died in that state in 1898, at the age of sixty-eight years, while his wife, who was born April 26, 1845 died on the 24th of January 1913.

In their family were three children: E.H. who is a physician of Little Rock, Ermon, who is the wife of Dr. A. L. Crume a dentist of Little Rock; and William N. of this review.

The father had been previously married, his first wife being Laura Doyle of Tennessee, and in their family were the following children: Thomas, James, Charles, T.D., Ada and Fannie.

The mother of William N. Wilkes had also been married before, her first husband being Bryant Gordon, by whom she had one child, Edna, now deceased.

Both J.S. and Josephine (Hayes) Wilkes were consistent members of the Methodist Episcopal church, South, and in his political views he was a democrat. He likewise belonged to the Masonic fraternity, and took an active interest in its work, serving as master of the lodge at Mercer, Tennessee.

William N. Wilkes pursued his education in the public schools of Mercer, Tennessee, and on leaving his native state came to Woodruff Co., after which he was employed in stores in Augusta until 1907. He then matriculated in the State University of Arkansas at Fayetteville and was graduated in 1911 with the Bachelor of Arts degree. He next entered the law school of the State University, in which he pursued his studies for a year, after which he returned to Woodruff Co. and taught in the rural districts for a time. He also served as county examiner of schools and in 1919 was elected to the office of county superintendent, serving through that and the ensuing year. In 1921 he was elected sheriff and collector of Woodruff Co. and continues in the dual position at the present time, making a record in this office as he did in the other positions which he filled, for marked fidelity to duty and faithfulness to every trust reposed in him. In addition to his official activities he gives some attention to his farming interest, being the owner of an excellent tract of land in this section of the state.

Mr. Wilkes was married to Miss Mildred Angus, a native of Woodruff county, and they have one child, William N., Jr., now three years of age. Since attaining his majority, Mr. Wilkes has always voted with the democratic party and fraternally he is a Royal Arch Mason, belonging to Augusta Lodge No. 45, A.F.&A.M. and also to the Royal Arch Chapter. He likewise has membership with the elks Lodge at Newport, also with the Sigma Alpha Epsilon and the Tau Nu Epsilon, two Greek letter fraternities. His religious faith is that of the Methodist Episcopal church, South, while Mrs. Wilkes, having membership in the Methodist church, is serving as secretary of its missionary society and takes a most active and helpful part in all church work. Their influence is ever given on the side of right and justice, of progress and improvement, and they are highly esteemed in August and throughout Woodruff county, where they have a legion of warm friends.

He married ANNIE ELLEN TEAL Unknown, daughter of John Teal and Almeda Stamp.

Notes

Was a lawyer, and later a county Judge in Madison Co. between 1923-1932.

There is a story told by both Carole and James about their grandfather, undoubtedly passed on by their mother Katherine. It is that when he was courting his wife Annie Ellen Teal, her father disapproved of the match, although her mother silently approved. One day when the father escorted her by train to her college, after the father left her and returned by train, Karl Keener Wilkes met her by arrangement, and they went off and got married immediately. He had dressed up in disguise unbeknownst to the father, and had actually ridden the train with them all the way. Annie Ellen of course knew about it, and probably so did her mother, but the father had not recognized him.

Another story is by my sister, Isabel Abbott Wilkes Ellis. Isabel worked for the county government in Nashville. She needed a reference for some reason, and went to Judge Wilkes' office, introduced herself (of course the Judge knew her by name, but hadn't met her earlier), and obtained the reference.

Children of Karl Wilkes and Annie Teal are:

Memphis Press-Scimitar for 15 December 1980

CARLTON WILKES' GIFTS OF SILVER DOLLARS BEAR INTEREST, by Jerry L. Robbins, P-S Director

Mr. Anonymous has once again donated $5,000.00 to the Press-Scimitar's Goodfellows in memory of an outstanding member of the Memphis business, civic or professional community. He wrote:

"Enclosed is a gift of $5,000.00 to your Goodfellows Christmas Fund in memory of one of Memphis' outstanding attorneys, Carlton N. Wilkes, who for years in his own personal way made the Christmas season a special event by playing Santa Claus to underprivileged children." He died Nov. 10 at the age of 73.

"A colorful, aggressive man with a bond of affection for children who needed help, Mr. Wilkes in 1931, around the Christmas season, began to give a total of 50 silver dollars to needy children on Memphis streets. To each child he gave a silver dollar, and because of the inflation and rising costs, he later increased the total to 100 silver dollars until 1962, when he boosted it again -- to 150 silver dollars. Once while trying a lawsuit in Somerville, Tenn., he gave away silver dollars to children 'who looked like they needed it.'

"Then in 1964, after 33 years, he had to abandon his silver dollar gifts because of scarcity. He couldn't get them from the banks. He switched his gifts to half dollars, and in 1964 he gave away 200 Kennedy half-dollars and each child got at least two "brand new ones never spent before." He continued to give half-dollars until ill health forced him to quit.

"He enjoyed the humorous responses of the children and said it warmed his heart to see a smile light up a young face. One boy at first refused to take a silver dollar because 'everybody knows a dollar is made out of paper.' He was finally convinced it was a dollar and 'there is a Santa Claus.'

"Born at Gates, Tenn., Mr. Wilkes attended Ripley, Tenn., High School and was a graduate of Cumberland University Law School at Lebanon, Tenn. He began a Memphis partnership in 1929 with Metcalf, Metcalf and Apperson and for 14 years was a law partner of Charles L. Neely. In recent years his law firm was Wilkes, McCullough and Taylor. He actively practiced in virtually every phase of the law. He was a member of the Memphis and Shelby County Bar Association, Tennessee Bar Association, American Trial Lawyers Association, and on the board of directors of Memphis Plaintiff Lawyers Association.

"Like Carlton Wilkes, who was Santa for years to children on the streets because he saw a need, every donor to the goodfellows in these few days before Christmas can fill Santa's role. Share the joy of giving with Mr. Anonymous and help put the Goodfellows over the top for its greatest 64th year of helping others."

Obituary:

This week Ripley and Lauderdale county mourn the passing of Dr. C. O. Wilkes, whose death occurred at his home on Henning Street about noon Tuesday. For about three weeks he had put up a brave fight, but finally lost to the ravages of typhoid fever and other complications.

Dr. Wilkes was one of the leading young men of the community. Popular with a large circle of friends, prominent in his profession, useful and enthusiastic in church work, loyal and patriotic to his town and nation, he was of peculiar importance to Ripley, and a man who will be greatly missed.

Dr. Wilkes graduated from a dental college in Memphis, and took a post-graduate course in Nashville. When he located in Ripley, he formed a partnership with Dr. Haltom, and later opened his own office which he was conducting at the time of his illness and subsequent death. By his uniform courtesy, close attention to business and proficient service, his clientele grew in numbers until his was one of the largest dental businesses in the city.

When the World War broke out, Dr. Wilkes volunteered and was stationed at Fort Oglethorpe where he was in the service of his country practicing his profession and rendering aid to those of his comrades who needed his sympathies and service. It was during his stay in camp that he met Miss Isabel Abbott of Atlanta, forming a friendship which culminated in marriage and the establishment of a lovely and happy home in Ripley. To this union came two bright sweet children: Isabel, age 41/2 years, and Charles, four months old.

Dr. Wilkes was in his 33rd year. He was a son of Mr. C. N. Wilkes of Gates, and resided in the county most of his life with the exception of the time he was in the army and a short stay in Memphis. He was past master of Ripley Lodge No. 630 F. & A. M., member of the Grotto, steward in the Methodist church and a public spirited citizen. He loved humanity, and kind and congenial and had a large number of friends who are sorrowing today over his departure.

The funeral was held at the Methodist church Wednesday afternoon, conducted by Dr. C. A. Waterfield, pastor, and Dr. F. H. Peeples of Dyersburg, his former pastor and personal friend of deceased. Dr. Peeples paid Dr. Wilkes a high tribute as a citizen, friend and neighbor and community builder. The songs by the choir were favorites of Dr. Wilkes and were very appropriate. The floral offerings were beautiful and elaborate, silent testimonies of the love of friends.

Internment was at Maplewood cemetery with Masonic honors, the pall bears being past masters.

Truly a good man has fallen. The town has lost a valuable citizen and hundreds have lost a true friend.

Mrs. Wilkes Parents and sister, Mr. & Mrs. Abbott and Miss Elizabeth Abbott, of Atlanta, Ga. were here several days prior to the death of Dr. Wilkes as was also his father and other relatives of Gates.

Those from a distance who attended the funeral were Dr. P. T. Anderson, Dr. J.E. Hayes, Mr. Cecil Lee, Mr. & Mrs. John Moore, Mr. Tom Wilkes, Mrs. Frank Fowlkes and Mrs. Laura Fowlkes of Dyersburg; Mr. Wm. Wilkes of Little Rock, Ark., Dr. & Mrs. R. B. CHARLES OPHIR WILKES, D.D.S.

A representative member of the dental profession in Lauderdale county is Dr. Charles Ophir Wilkes, a prominent resident of Ripley. A native of Tennessee, his birth occurred in Dyersburg on the 16th of March 1894, a son of Charles Neely and Iula (Sutton) Wilkes, likewise natives of this state.

In the acquirement of his early educational training, Charles Ophir Wilkes attended the public schools of Lauderdale county, and subsequently entered Union University at Jackson. His earliest ambition was to become a member of the dental profession, consequently he enrolled in the University of Tennessee at Memphis, from which institution he was graduated in 1916 with the D.D.S. degree. He immediately opened an office at Friendship, Tennessee, and practiced there for one year. In 1917 he enlisted for service in the World War. On the 6th of June of that year he joined the First Tennessee Ambulance Corps at Memphis, and on the 4th of October 1917 he was commissioned a first Lieutenant in the Dental Reserve Corps., and sent to Chatianooga, Chickamauga Park. On the 20th of May 1918 he was transferred to Camp Gordon, Georgia, and served in Dental Infirmary No. 1, until receiving his honorable discharge on the 28th of January 1919. In July of that year he came to Ripley and has since resided here. He has the most up-to-date dental offices in this section of the county, and is enjoying an extensive and lucrative patronage. He is a constant student of his profession, keeping in touch with the advancement being made by various eminent members throughout the country, and he has already attained a prominent position among the leading dentists of Lauderdale county.

On the 28th of April, 1919 at Atlanta, Georgia, was celebrated the marriage of Dr. Wilkes to Miss Isabelle R. Abbott, a daughter of Milo H. and Isabelle R. (Mackay) Abbott, the former a native of Vermont and the latter of Georgia. Her grandparents came to this country from Scotland. To the union of Dr. and Mrs. Wilkes one child has been born: Isabelle Abbott, whose birth occurred on the 13th of April, 1921. Birth*26 May 1807 On a Farm, Morristown, Jefferson, Tennessee1
Marriage*10 June 1833 Jefferson, Tennessee, Principal=Hannah Hale Reed2
Death*5 November 1879 Morristown, Jefferson, Tennessee2
Burial*circa 7 November 1879 Liberty Hill United Methodist Church Cemetery, Hamblen, Tennessee2
Note*1870 Hamblen County Formed
Will*17 May 1876 Hamblen, Tennessee, Last Will and Testament of Alexander Williams
May 17th day 1876

I, Alexander Williams, being of sound mind and memory do this day make my last will and testament for the purposes hereafter mentioned.

First, I will that after my death that my body be buried in a plain decent manner and that my burial expenses with my just debts be paid and my soul return to God who gave it.

Second, my will and desire by this is that all my children join equal and alike.

Now I will state how the [??] is now and what I desire hereafter.

They have all received equal in stocks, household and kitchen furniture [??] but other ways they are not. Ezekiel Williams, Wilia Williams, Gideon Williams these three has received five hundred dollars a piece in land or money for that purpose. In lieu of this I will to my daughter Cate McGee all the land I own East of Gideon Williams' farm.

Also I will to Josiah Williams the north side of the farm that I now live on the side where he now lives the line to begin at the west corner of said farm at a stake g[??] and hickory. Also Thompson's corner thence South with Thompson's line forty seven poles to a stake thence a strait line Eastward passing three persimmon at the creek at lower end of the meadow tract so strait on to Wesley Doggell's line, thence with the lines on the North side of said lands to the beginning. Now for this land Josiah is to pay one thousand dollars at the end of ten years. Five hundred dollars to be paid to be Estate, the other five hundred to be paid to the heirs of my daughter Molly C. Noe dec'd, Hannah Noe and Wilia E. Noe, to be paid to them two hundred and fifty dollars each when they become twenty-one years of age, if one or both should not live to that age pay that part to my estate.

I also bequeath to my grandson Robert A. Noe the son of my daughter Nancy M. Noe dec'd the sum of three hundred dollars first money paid out of my estate.

Now the South side of said farm where I now live is to belong to my wife Hannah Williams so long as she lives or remains a widow. At her death or if she marries it is to belong to my daughter Addy Williams, though she is to pay one thousand dollars in two years to my estate.

Now if Addy wants it different, sell the land at highest bidder on twelve month [??] and of that sum she is to have five hundred dollars, the remainder belongs to my estate.

This places my heirs all equal, Ezekiel, Wilia, William, Josiah, Gideon, Nancy, Mollie, Cate, and Addy all having received five hundred dollars in land or money and also stock and household and kitchen furniture, then what money paid back to my estate and all that I have on hand to be equally divided with my heirs except fifty dollars with all the stock and household and kitchen furniture with all the grain and farming utensils which she wishes to keep this she is to have during her natural life.

Burial*circa 11 January 1867 Ezekiel Williams Cemetery, Jefferson, Tennessee1
Note* From "Hamblen Heritage", Fall 1987:
"Ezekiel Williams was born in 1769 in North Carolina. In 1790 he located about six miles east of Morristown. His son, Alexander Williams, married Hannah Read and settled on Spring Creek, a few miles from Morristown. He had four sons, three of whom located in Morristown, viz: Gid, Wylie and William.
Gid Williams married Sarah Stubblefield and was a prominent farmer and miller, living in different localities from time to time. He owned a fine farm of several hundred acres, a mile to the northeast of Morristown, now the property of the Morristown Normal and Industrial College. He conveyed water from a fine spring nearby into the house, which was an innovation at that time. From this place, Gid Williams removed to Bright's on the Holston river, where he operated a large mill, and later removed to Morristown. Oscar, the eldest son of Gid Williams, died in early manhood. He was a genial, whole-souled young man and his death was mourned by a large circle of friends. Another son, Bascom, married the adopted daughter of Mrs. Geo. Folsom, Nellie Turley, and removed to Kansas. Ada, a daughter, married Thomas Caon Jr. and removed to Florida. Mortimer, the youngest son, lives in the west.
William (Billy) Williams first married Josie Ambrose, and had three children, Willie, Carl, and Ralph. He married the second time Miss Margaret Clark of VA. Their children were Mamie, Francis, Clara, Ray, and Roberta.
Wiley Williams married Joan Ellis and lived at the old Rufus Kidwell place, north of the power plant. Later he lived on east Main Street. He removed to Kansas. Children of Wiley Williams were Margaret, Adeline and Joe"
[End of "Hamblen Heritage"]

Hi Ken,

I hope all is well with you. I found some additional info, and thought you might like to see it:

You know, Wiley also had a son Franklin L. Frank married Hattie Karr, daughter of Seborn Karr and sister of my great-grandfather Walter Karr (what a small world!). Frank and Hattie had at least 2 children, Bryan and Anna, and they lived in Richmond, Franklin County, Kansas. You can find details of this on my website, if you're interested.

  1. Ken - Thank you so much for your pedigree. We have a lot on the same
Snodgrasses. I have the parents of your first entry. Joseph Snodgrass was
born ca 1712. His wife's name is Hannah Vernon - Her father was Isaac Vernon and her mother was Hannah Williams - her father was Isaac Vernon and her mother Hannah Williams I also have 4 earlier generations of Vernons. They were originally from France but came to England in early 1600's. The Vernons have a Quaker connection.. As long as I am writing you will add one big problem I have tried to solve for a long time. My gr-grandfather was John Snodgrass(his father was Josepoh Snodgrass III and his mother Catherine Gish. ) He m. Mary (Polly) Kimble in Fayette Co.,Ohio on 17 Jan. 1833, Her parents were David Kimble and Martha Rose.

We can't find parents of David and Martha.. You probably haven't done Kimble
or Rose genealogy but as long as I am asking you about Snodgrass Lineage
I'll go ahead and and mention Kimble and Rose. I have no clues to their
    parents.

Thanks again. If you need that early generation of Snodgrass or the Vernon
connection let me know. Thanks again. Leona McCullough
