Note | Benjamin Franklin Christopher (William ) was born in Mar 1823 in Tennessee. He died in Jul 1901 in Vacaville, Salano Co. CA and was buried in Vacaville, Salano Co. CA. Benjamin Franklin and family traveled west over the Oregon Trail, After leaving Tennessee, they stopped for awhile at his father's place in Missouri as the 1850 Federal Census lists them at William Christopher's Aug 22, 1850 Campbell Township Greene Co MO This is William Christopher's 2nd family. In 1852 they continued on to Oregon traveling the same train the Donnor Party traveled in. Luckily they continued on to Oregon when the ill fated Donnor party headed off to California over the Sierra Nevada Mountains and were trapped in an early snow. Benjamin Franklin settled in Oregon for awhile,(don't know just where as yet), then he worked his way down to the Vacaville area with his wagon. He lived in Medicino County for a bit before he settled down in Vacaville on a ranch he purchased. Census 1850 showed him and wife living with a William Christopher Came by covered wagon on Oregon Trail, to Princeton,CA in Colusa, Co. By Ox team and covered wagon Settled bought a ranch where all four sons died, Jim as a young man, many years ago. Ranch divided, Bill and Charley built their homes. Most still owned by grandchildren (1955) Benjamin married Anna Marie Griffin. Anna was born in Nov 1829 in Maury Co Tennessee. She died October 1892 (62 yrs) in Vacaville, Salano Co. CA. They had the following children: + 15 M i William Griffin Christopher 16 M ii Benjamin Franklin Christopher Jr. was born in Jul 1860 in Vacaville, Salano Co. CA. He died in Nov 1946 in Vacaville, Salano Co. CA. This gt uncle became quite well known in Vacaville, I have an article from a historical book from Salano Co 17 M iii James Madison Christopher was born in Jan 1848 in TN. He died in Sep 1876 in Vacaville, Salano Co. CA and was buried Vacaville, Ca. 18 F iv Sarah Stacy Christopher was born in Oct 1849 in Tennessee. She died in Jun 1938. 19 F v Nancy Ann Christopher was born in Sep 1857 in Oregon or California. She died in Nov 1929 in California ???. 20 M vi Infant Christopher was born on 29 Sep 1862 in r California, probably Medecino Co.. He died on 5 Nov 1862 in Probably California, Mendecino Co. 21 M vii Charles Boone Christopher was born in Feb 1864 in California probably Mendecino Co. He died in Nov 1938 in Vacaville, Salano Co. CA. Charlie, Benjamin and William G, my Gt grandfather, lived their lives on the family ranches in Solano Co., Vacaville area their father, Benjamin Franklin Sr, after living in Mendecino Ca for awhile came to the area in the 1870's bought a large ranch, raised cattle and fruit, mainly fruit orchards.. the main ranch was split between the three Christopher boys. 22 F viii Infant Christopher was born on 5 Jun 1869 in Probably California, Mendecino Co. She died on 25 Jun 1869 in Probably California, Mendecino Co. 1. William Christopher was born on 5 Mar 1799 in Guilford, North Carolina. William moved to Springfield,MO in 1850 from Maury Co. TN, which was then Campbell Township. He is listed in 1850 cnesus and tax rolls, by 1860 he had prospered considerably. By 1870 his second wife had died and he was in TX with his third wife. More information to be added William married (1) Stacy Nicholson in Apr 1822 in Tennessee ( maybe). Only information I picked up was that the lady had my Gt Gt grandfather, William Griffin C in Jan 1852, they then up and left by wagon train for Oregon, I noticed she had another baby in Oregon in October, that mean she was pregnant all the way West. Walking probably most of the way. Tough lady, besides taking care of two little ones and another infant. William and Stacy had the following children: + 2 M i Benjamin Franklin Christopher 3 M ii John Quincy Adams Christopher was born on 28 Jan 1825 in Maury Co Tennessee. 4 M iii William N Christopher Jr. was born on 2 Sep 1826 in Maury Co Tennessee. He died Texas ??? or California ???. I think William N went out to California with his brother Benjamin in 1852 or maybe a bit eariler, I really think they went together. I have land records of WilliamN C JR buying land in Mendocino, Co., Calif on May 10, 1870 and on May 5th, 1871 I don't know if he stayed in Calif or went to Texas where his father was. Haven't looked for death records for him in Calif. I think there was a William N C died in Texas, don't know if same. 5 M iv Daniel Boone(David B, Davee) Christopher was born on 20 Feb 1828 in Maury Co Tennessee. Nancy was age 30 and William age 70 on 1870 Census. They were married May 25, 1865. had three more children. Note* | Hi Ken, Yes I did acquire a lot of information on your web site, some things didn't "jive" for me. Stacy was William's first wife not 2nd. Notice William and Stacy had a son named: William Nicholson Christopher JR. b. 02, Sept 1826, well they had another son earlier named Benjamin Franklin Christopher b. Mar. 1823. You don't have him listed on your data. This is my Gt Gt grandfather. My grandfather's cousin wrote a letter in 1955 from Potter valley, CA and listed all the family, births, deaths, marriages, and some nice history about THEIR Gt grandfather William NICKOLSON Christopher. He listed the three families of William Nickolson Christopher. 1. Benjamin Franklin Christopher, Vacaville 2. John Adams Christopher, Potter Valley, (John Quincy) 3. Daniel Boone Christopher Scott Oregon (David B) 1. Warren Christopher Missouri 2. Calvin Christopher Idaho 1. Lee Christopher Williams, CA (Robert E) 3. Henry Christopher Williams, CA ( Henry A) My grandfather's cousin, J. H. Sweeny, listed only the males I notice, probably because the girls didn't come west. Also the towns are where they evidently lived in 1950's. The letter is as follows: Potter Valley, Sept. 25, 1955 Dear Raleigh, Received your letter a few days ago and will try to give you the information you want. Some of it at least. Granddad, Benjamin Christopher was born in Tennessee, he was a grandson of one of Daniel Boone's sisters and had a brother named Boone who went entirely deaf. A great hunter who would stake his horse to his own foot so if a bear came the horse would wake him and who always avoided the inner side of a trail so rattlers wouldn’t get him as he couldn't hear them. Tennessee was a great place for corn and acorns. I remember him telling us kids of driving hogs 3 or 4 hundred miles to South Alaabame as he called it to feed the niggers in the cotton fields. My pen quit so will try a pencil, and then would walk home 100 miles every 3 days, of course that was slavery days. And I recollect him telling of going to a shed to see a nigger that had run away and been shot out of a tree, taking care of course not to kill a good negger. He moved to Missouri in 1850 and to Princeton in Colusa, Co. in 1854 by ox team and covered wagon. To Potter Valley in 1859, to Vacaville in 1875, bought the ranch where all four sons died, Jim as a young man, many years ago. The ranch was divided and Bill, Ben and Charley built their homes. Most of it is still owned by the grandchildren. Grandpa, Grandma, Jim, Bill, Charley, and Charley's wife are all buried in the family plot at Vacaville (cow Town). Well I guess this answers your questions pretty well so will close for this time, Your truly, J.H. Sweeney This was my grandfather Raleigh's first cousin, His mother was Sarah Stacy Christopher, married Owen Sweeney, Nov 9, 1869, Potter Valley CA. I've been to Vacaville checked all my Christopher family out there, been to the cemeteries. etc. etc. The only photos I have are of Benjamin F. Christopher's son, William Griffin Christopher, my Gt Grandfather and of course on down with my grandfather, etc. David Christopher, when I first signed on to the Message board thinks we have the same connection back to his Nicholas in VA. I sent him some photos of my grandfather and his brother , He cut and pasted and placed next to some William Christopher family photos he has on the site. BOY or BOY, my grandfather and his, look like brothers or cousins at the least. The family resemblances are unbelievable. I'm sure they were cousins. I am pursuing my line back as I can, Waiting for some information from Guilford Co. NC, hopefully with William Christopher’s parents. I was back in Green Co MO in October, verified my William Christopher moved there in 1850, and 1850 census shows his son MY Benjamin Christopher with young wife and 2 children living next door, my Gt Grandfather, William Griffin Christopher was then born Jan 1852 there in Missouri and a number of boys left for California by 1854 over the Oregon Trail. I believe that was the same year as the Ill fated Donner party came west, my family lore is such, they continued on to Oregon when the Donner party chose the Sacramento route.. I do have some land records on a William Nicholson Christopher JR. purchasing land in Mendecino Co. CA in May 1870 & 71. I have some interesting historical sketches on GtGt grandfather's Benjamin Franklin's son Benjamin Franklin JR. from Vacaville, I picked up while there a couple of years ago. I did check on William Christopher and his third wife Nancy(Dickey) who he married in 1865 in Texas. They all settled in Nacogdoches Co. TX. He was 70 yrs old in 1870 and she was 30 and had a few other children, maybe a widow from the war? they even had a few more kids. WOW, The one thing I found while in Green Co Mo. was a different civil war listing for William Christopher I find: Christopher, William Co. H Unit: US Reserve Corps. MO Inf. (3mos., 1861) Private There were a lot of folks around Springfield, MO who were in this particular short militia, Of course he couldn't have been enlisted as he was too old a man. 61, I was told they only took up to 42 or 43 yr olds. Anyway, enough for now. sure helped me form a nice bigger picture of my Christophers being back in Maury Co Tenn. and Springfield, MO. Sure wish I could have made it to NC, have to continue that from a distance. Sure hope I can thread back through this (overwhelming) bunch to which one I belong to that first came to our shores and from where. I think Germany as our family lore says. We'll see. Hope I haven't bored you to death Ken, but wanted to get this off while I had time this early am. Christopher was born in 1860 in Potter's valley, Mendocino County and he possesses all those characteristics that made his parent loved of all who knew them. For fourteen years Mr. Christopher remained in his native county and then he removed south to Los Angeles County with his parents. But as he loved the rugged pasture land and the fertile valleys of the north he returned to Mendocino County, and thence, in 1876, to Solano County, settling in the Lagoon valley, where the father purchased one hundred and forty acres of land, about seventeen of this being tillable. He first engaged in grain and stock raising, and later became interested in horticulture. Besides the land mentioned he also owns fifty-five acres about three miles west of Vacaville. For the past twenty-two years he has been engaged in the fruit-growing business, raising peaches, apricots and prunes. He also raises all the stock that he uses on his land and in the busy season he employs about ten men to assist him. Mr. Christopher has served on the school board for the last fifteen years. He belongs to no fraternal orders, but is ever ready to assist in every social function that will promote the interests of the community in which he lives. During 1890 Mr. Christopher was married to Miss Edna Towson, a native of Solano county, and the daughter of W. B. and Mary E. (Starks) Towson, who are represented in this work. Six children were born to Mr. and Mrs. Christopher, of whom four are living: Ralph, employed in Vacaville; Ellis, attending the Vacaville high school; Vernon, attending the Lagoon grammar school; and Gerald. Mr. Christopher is a Republican and is always ready to aid any movement that has for its object the upbuilding of the county.
