Note* | Rollie (Raleigh) Christopher (William Griffin , Benjamin Franklin , William ) was born on 6 Apr 1884 in Vacaville, Salano Co. CA. He died on 19 Mar 1964 in Eureka, CA and was buried Oceanview Cemetery in Eureka, CA. Raleigh, or Rollie, as he was called as a child, grew up in Vacaville, California, son of pioneer family who had came west on a wagon train from Missouri . Previously Tenn. Rollie had one brother, Dessie, quite a bit younger than him. His parents Frances Newton Christopher and William Griffin Christopher were divorced when the boys were quite young. Their mother died in her early 40's the boys were raised by their aunts and uncles in Vacaville. Their mother Frances was one of seven sisters, from a pioneer family who lived in nearby Fairfield, California. The boys father William,(Bill) Christopher evidently was gone to Oregon for awhile when the boys were young. He later lived at the family ranch in Vacaville and died there. The boys were evidently not close to their fathe r. Raleigh went to work for the Northwestern Pacific Railroad when he was old enough and worked his way up from fireman to Engineer, His route brought him from the San Rafel area up to FieldsLanding, Ca. In fact he brought the first train up to Northern Calif, a real honor. He brought his brother Dessie on the railroad as soon as he was old enough also, the boys were not too well cared for at the relatives ranches. Probably cared for but felt they were worked too hard. Raleigh met and married my grandmother, Francis Flaherty in FieldsLanding, Ca. She worked at the local mercantile store. The were married in Eureka, CA at St Bernard's rectory, and lived in Fieldslanding for awhile, my father was born there. They then moved to Albee St in Eureka, later moved to 2239 B st when my aunt Eileen their 2nd child was 11 yrs of age., that would have been 1924. My aunt Eileen was born in 1913. Raleigh spent his life on the railroad, also enjoyed a summerhome at Price Creek, south of Eureka for many years, his hobby was gardening, His gardens were masterpieces. My grandfather was a good man, very quiet, and became a catholic on his death bed, I'm sure just for my grandmother's sake. He was quiet, due to the fact that my grandmother did all the talking. total control person she was. I did not know him well as he was very quiet, my only memories are of him making me eat my vegetables, no matter what. Rollie married Frances Kathrine Flaherty. Frances was born US Life Saving Station in Samoa, CA. She died on 5 May 1981 in Eureka, CA and was buried Oceanview Cemetery in Eureka, CA. They had the following children: + 25 M i Melvin Joseph Christopher 26 F ii Mary Eileen Christopher Source |

Note* | Hi Ken, sorry for the delay in getting back to you, I've been under the weather, flu and now pneumonia, UGH, I'm glad some of what I sent may be of help. I know what you mean about dates not jiving, but my William Christopher was still having kids at 65. WOW, And now I'm convinced they all named one or two kids Billy, just to make us CRAZY.. The Williams in my line finally stopped with my Great Grandfather. William Griffin Christopher. If you want any other birth and marriage dates of he three families listed in what I sent you, let me know. This Christopher thing could be overwhelming, but I have been a long time researching just my line backwards, so that by the time I joined David's mailing list, I pretty well know just who I am looking for. I think now I am narrowing to any Christopher middle names , Nicholson, Griffin, Boone. NC, back to VA area, My guess is your connection and Davids. From my William, I think his father is a DANIEL with a Nicholson for a wife, and his father a John, with a Boone girl for a wife. The old family naming pattern was so religiously followed in my family. I feel this will help me thread my way through. It would be great to finally connect with David's Nicholas Christopher, and I guess yours too. One little family oral history tidbit, these always are a help, I find, It has been passed down that our Christophers are German. By the way no, I don't have a family web site, just my commercial art site, www.artistalaska.com I have been trying to organize all my genealogy stuff into my Legacy program. I hurried and put together the GED file I sent to David, first time I'd done one. I properly managed to loose my Christopher stuff and had to type it all back in my files. I am fortunate I have my expert, dear hubby, at my elbow, he is a webmaster and all I need to do is holler HELP. His site is: www.whitegyr.com Thanks so much for your comments and I am still waiting on a bit of information from Guilford, NC, I'll pass it on when it arrives. Keep in touch, we'll thread through these mazes yet. Cheers Sharon from Montana and Happy Holidays -----Original Message----- From: sharon hiner Sent: Tuesday, December 19, 2000 6:15 AM To: Ken Mullins Subject: Our Christopher connection ================================================= Hi Ken, Yes I did acquire a lot of information on your web site, some things didn't "jive" for me. Stacy was William's first wife not 2nd. Notice William and Stacy had a son named: William Nicholson Christopher JR. b. 02, Sept 1826, Well they had another son eariler named Benjamin Franklin Christopher b. Mar. 1823. You don't have him listed on your data. This is my Gt Gt grandfather. My grandfather's cousin wrote a letter in 1955 from Potter valley, CA and listed all the family, births, deaths, marriages, and some nice history about THEIR Gt grandfather William NICKOLSON Christopher. He listed the three families of William Nickolson Christopher. 1. Benjamin Franklin Christopher, Vacaville 2. John Adams Christopher, Potter Valley, (John Quincy) 3. Daniel Boone Christopher Scott Oregon (David B) 1. Warren Christopher Missouri 2. Calvin Christopher Idaho 1. Lee Christopher Williams, CA (Robert E) 3. Henry Christopher Williams, CA ( Henry A) My grandfather's cousin, J. H. Sweeny, listed only the males I notice, probably because the girls didn't come west. Also the towns are where they evidently lived in 1950's. The letter is as follows: Potter Valley, Sept. 25, 1955 Dear Raleigh, Received your letter a few days ago and will try to give you the information you want. Some it it at least. Grandad, Benjamin Christopher was born in Tennessee, he was a grandson of one of Daniel Boone's sisters and had a brother named Boone who went entirely deaf. A great hunter who would stake his horse to his own foot so if a bear came the horse would wake him and who always avoided the inner side of a trail so rattlers wouln't get him as he couldn't hear them. Tennessee was a great place for corn and acorns. I remember him telling us kids of driving hogs 3 or 4 hundred miles to South Alaabame as he called it to feed the niggers in the cotton fields. My pen quit so will try a pencil, and then would walk home 100 miles every 3 days, of course that was slavery days. And I recollect him telling of going to a shed to see a nigger that had run away and been shot out of a tree, taking care of course not to kill a good negger. He moved to Missouri in 1850 and to Princeton in Colusa, Co. in 1854 by ox tean and covered wagon. To Potter Valley in 1859, to Vacaville in 1875, bought the ranch where all four sons died, Jim as a young man, many years ago. The ranch was divided and Bill, Ben and Charley built their homes. Most of it is still owned by the grandchildren. Grandpa, Grandma, Jim, Bill, Charley, and Charley's wife are all buried in the f amily plot at vacaville (cow Town). Well I guess this answeres your questions pretty well so will close for this time, Your truly, J.H. Sweeney This was my grandfather Raleigh's first cousin, His mother was Sarah Stacy Christopher, married Owen Sweeney, Nov 9, 1869, Potter Valley CA. I've been to Vacaville checked all my Christopher family out there, been to the cemeteries. etc. etc. The only photos I have are of Benjamin F. Christopher's son, william Griffin Christopher, my Gt Grandfather and of course on down with my grandfather, etc. David Christopher, when I first signed on to the Message board thinks we have the same connection back to his Nicholas in VA. I sent him some photos of my grandfather and his brother , He cut and pasted and placed next to some William Christopher family photos he has on the site. BOY or BOY, my grandfather and his, look like brothers or cousins at the least. The family resemblences are unblelievable. I'm sure they were cousins. I am pursuing my line back as I can, Waiting for some information from Guilford Co. NC, hopefully with William Christopher''s parents. I was back in Green Co MO in October, verified my William Christopher moved there in 1850, and 1850 census shows his son MY Benjamin Christopher with young wife and 2 children living next door, my Gt Grandfather, William Griffin Christopher was then born Jan 1852 there in Missouri and a number of boys left for California by 1854 over the Oregon Trail. I believe that was the same year as the Ill fated Donner party came west, my family lore is such, they continued on to Oregon when the Donner party chose the Sacramento route.. I do have some land records on a William Nicholson Christopher JR. purchasing land in Mendecino Co. CA in May 1870 & 71. I have some interesting historical sketches on GtGt grandfather's Benjamin Franklin's son Benjamin Franklin JR. from Vacaville, I picked up while there a couple of years ago. I did check on William Christopher and his third wife Nancy(Dickey) who he married in 1865 in Texas. They all settled in Nacadogches Co. TX. He was 70 yrs old in 1870 and she was 30 and had a few other children, maybe a widow from the war? They even had a few more kids. WOW, The one thing I found while in Green Co Mo. was a different civil war listing for William Christopher I find: Christopher, William Co. H Unit: US Reserve Corps. MO Inf. (3 mos., 1861) Private There were a lot of folks around Springfield, MO who were in this particular short militia, Of course he couldn't have been enlisted as he was too old a man. 61, I was told they only took up to 42 or 43 yr olds. Anyway, enough for now. sure helped me form a nice bigger picture of my Christophers being back in Maury Co Tenn and Springfield, MO. Sure wish I could have made it to NC, have to continue that from a distance. Sure hope I can thread back through this (overwhelming) bunch to which one I belong to that first came to our shores and from where. I think Germany as our family lore says. We'll see. Hope I haven't bored you to death Ken, but wanted to get this off while I had time this early am. More information to be added William married (1) Stacy Nicholson in Apr 1822 in Tennessee (maybe). Only information I picked up was that the lady had my Gt Gt grandfather, William Griffin C in Jan 1852, they then up and left by wagon train for Oregon, I noticed she had another baby in Oregon in October, that mean she was pregnant all the way West. Walking probably most of the way. Tough lady, besides taking care of two little ones and another infant. I have land records of WilliamN C JR buying land in Mendocino, Co., Calif on May 10, 1870 and on May 5th, 1871 I don't know if he stayed in Calif or went to Texas where his father was. Note* | . William Griffin Christopher (Benjamin Franklin , William ) was born in Jan 1852 in Missouri. He died in Aug 1940 in Vacaville, Salano Co. CA and was buried in Vacaville, Salano Co. CA. William (Bill) Griffin Christopher, was born in Missouri, while his parents were staying at Grandfather's William's home, (according to a 1850 census. His parents then headed west by wagon over the Oregon Trail. They settled in Oregon for short time, then to California, settling in Vacaville, Ca. Bill was raised on the family farm. He married Francis Newton, a daughter of Ambrose Newton, pioneer family of a neighboring town of Fairfield, CA. They had my grandfather, Rollie, and another son Dessie. He and Frances were divorced while the boys were still young. I learned that Bill left and went to Oregon and the Columbia River area, I have a stock certificate where he and a friend bought 400 shares of stock in the Columbia River Land Company. Evidently did not materialize. Bill returned to Vacaville and lived out his life at the family ranch there. There are numerous photos of the redheaded . hazel eyed, good looking guy in family photo album. There is a special photo of the old gentleman sitting in a rocking chair when he was in his eighties or so. Very distinguished looking man. I had red hair and hazel eyes, He is the only one in the family who could have passed them down to me. I wish I could have known him. William married Francis Newton. Francis was born about 1856 in Missouri. She died in 1899 in St Helena, CA, (Salano Co) and was buried in Fairfield, CA(Salano Co). They had the following children: + 23 M i Rollie (Raleigh) Christopher 24 M ii Dessie Christopher was born on 5 Apr 1884 in Vacaville, Salano Co. CA. He died in San Francisco, CA and was buried in San Francisco, CA (Vetrens). (Medical):Dessie was the younger brother of Rollie Christopher. Both boys were raised by theiraunts and Uncles (Newton girls) after their mother died and parents had been divorced after 10 years of marriage. Rollie got Dessie a job on the railroad with him as soon as Dessie was old enough. He worked untill it became apparent he was color blind, he couldn't discern the red and green signal lights. Dessie also was in WWI served in France, lots of photos in photo album he took in France. After the war he stayed awhile and toured. Later after leaving the Railroad he went to work for a meat packing company in Chicago, he never married, was in the Vetern's home in San Francisco in later years and passed away there, is buried there also. http://www.geocities.com/srunreal/Gedcom/hiner/pafg03.htm#63 |
