HISTORY

Evan Griffith is listed in the Pennsylvania Archives as being a resident of Hilltown Township, Bucks County, when he served in Captain Grier's Company on August 21, 1775. He received pay on October 6, 1777, for service in the Bucks County militia, and was listed as a lieutenant in the 3rd Battalion of the Bucks County militia, May 14, 1781, in place of Thomas Marshall. The family moved to Bedford County, Pennsylvania, about 1789.

There is a tax list for Hopewell Township, date not given, #173: occupant, Evan Griffith; owner, James Hunter; building 20x28, valued at $20.00; log barn; and land: 230 acres 595 perches. Neighbor: John Flook. (the Fluke/Flook family is buried in St. Paul's churchyard near Yellow Creek in Hopewell Valley). The 1814 tax list of Hopewell Township shows Evan Griffith, aged 74 years. Two of Evan's sons, Abel and Evan, served in the Bedford County militia during the War of 1812. Evan Griffith's will mentions eight children and his wife, but only the children are named. His daughter, Elizabeth, is not mentioned in the will and probably died before 1825. His will as transcribed follows:

In the name of God Amen. I, Evan Griffith of the township of Hopewell and County of Bedford and State of Pennsylvania, being weak in body but of sound mind and memory blessed be God, do this twelfth day of March in the year of our Lord one thousand eight hundred and twenty five make and publish this my last will and testament in the manner following, that is to say. First I give and bequeath to my daughter Rachel; now intermarried with Ignatius Harden the sum of twenty dollars also I give and bequeath to my son John the sum of five Dollars also I give and bequeath to my daughter Mary now Intermarried with John Harden the sum of twenty Dollars also I give and bequeath to my Daughter Lidia now Intermarried with Reuban Miller the sum of twenty Dollars, Also I give and bequeath to my son Benjamin the sum of five Dollars also I give and bequeath to my daughter Hannah the sum of twenty dollars and two cows, also I give and bequeath to my Niece Susannah Hains the sum of twenty dollars and one cow and one bed the above sums or Ligisees to be paid out of my Goods and chattles at the Expiration of fifteen months after my dec'd. HISTORY

Evan Griffith emigrated from Wales with his parents, brother, and sisters before 1689 (probably in 1687). Evan and his first wife settled in Montgomery Township, Montgomery County, Pennsylvania, where he purchased 150 acres from Thomas Walmsley. The deed was signed on the 10th day of December, 1703, and recorded in Book 3-198 on the 30th day of January, 1704. His first wife is probably buried on this farm. Evan Griffith "a Welshman" bought another 325 acres from John Plumly in 1738. The Griffith farm was about midway between Reiff's Corner and Fairhill, and extended almost to Fairhill.

Evan Griffith left to his daughters, Catherine, wife of Theophilus Williams, £20, and the same amount to Sarah, wife of Thomas Bab. Both these daughters lived in the west corner of Montgomery Township, near Lansdale. To his son, Nathaniel, he left "the plantation in Hilltown, whereon he now resides being 101 acres, the northwest corner of land I bought of Jeremiah Langhorne." To his son, Isaac, he left the "plantation where I now live of 103 acres."

HISTORY

Howell and Eleanor Ann Griffith had a son buried at Poncheston, Wales, on the 9th day of the 2nd month, 1683. Howell Griffith was jailed in June 1684 for being a Quaker and for not attending the National Service. Howell and Eleanor Ann, with their children, arrived in Philadelphia before 1689. They settled in the borough of Byberry, Pennsylvania (now a part of Philadelphia). He purchased from Griffith Jones a lot on "The Bank" at High Street (now called Market Street). Griffith Jones had left London and obtained 6,000 acres of land in 1681. It was surveyed to him in 1701. The settlement he established was for those Welsh families who left their homes due to religious convictions.

I just now noticed a typo in the history of Evan Griffith (1736-1826). St. Paul's church is located near Yellow Creek in Hopewell, not Yellow Springs. It's a beautiful old country cemetery situated on a hill next to a church that was built in the 1880s (it was there much longer, but the old church is gone. It was originally a German Reformed Church). Many of Evan's neighbors are buried there, but none of the burials are from before the 1830s. I talked to a local historian and he said that "all" of the early burials were made in Duvall Cemetery which dates from about 1791. It's way back on Hickory Hill in Broad Top Township (which was part of Hopewell Township during Evan's time) and obviously has MANY unmarked graves, including some around the marked Griffith graves, and many that are marked with field stones.
