Note* | John Griffith and Josephine Small were married in Wisconsin in l902. When they came to Washington State, they had two children - Melissa and Gilbert.
Note | The Griffiths arrived in Wenatchee in l907. It is unknown what time of the year they arrived. They lived at 2l5 N Delaware. The house is now gone, replaced by an apartment building.
Note | John was employed as a carpenter. More research is needed to see if one of the homes upon which he worked is still in existence.
Note | While living in Wenatchee, John and Josie bought the wood cookstove that is still in use at the cabin.
Note | Clifford was born in Wenatchee while they lived there.
Note | September 8, l909 is the date of sale for the land in the Entiat Valley. From the Title Abstract, we have found that John and Josie bought the place along with M C (Marvin Calvin) Griffith, then a batchelor. Later, December l2, l9l0, Marvin and Carolina Griffith quit claimed to John and Josie.
Note | Originally, there was no road, or a very poor road, to Entiat. Most travel to Entiat was by the steamboats. However, John would walk to Wenatchee t o work during the week, after the family moved to the Entiat ranch. At one time when he missed to boat, John walked and beat the boat to Entiat. It must have been one of those times when the boat crew could not get attached to the cables easily, to pull the boat through the rapids.
Note | It is thought that John and Josie found the Entiat ranch for sale while they were up visiting Josie cousin, Maude Macy Roys. Of these l0 acres for sale, 5 was already planted with fruit. Eventually, the home place had many varies of fruit - Peach Plum, Italian Prune, Bartlett and De Anjou pears, peaches, cherries - Moremcy, Bing, Lambert, and apples -Jeffries, Spritz, Greening, Ben Davis, Snow Apple, Lady Apple, Rome Beauty, Stayman, Windsep, Gravenstein, Dutchess, Wealthy, Yellow Newton, Common Newton, Delicious, and Transparent (Lodi). Thirty-three varieties of fruit have been grown on the place.
Note | We feel that John and Josie came to Washington as they wanted to raise a large family and that the Sauk/Vernon counties of Wisconsin from which they came, were already well populated. Most of the better farm land was already being farmed.
Note | Also, from Mike Griffith who heard this from his Grandfather, George Griffith, that John's father was no a easy person to be around. This may have b een another deciding factor. Although the house and land were by the Entiat River, a reliable source of drinking water was needed. Ner Small, Josie's brother, witched the well. It wa s located behind the house. It is thought that before then, drinking water came from Dinkleman Creek.
Note | As said before, John worked in Wenatchee as a carpenter to have some cash m oney in the house. He worked in Town during the week and then came home to catc h upon his work at home. In later years, he would work out grafting for others. He charged a piece rate and guaranteed 80% live graft.
Note | He was one of the first orchardists in the area to pay his pickers by the b ox. He had his own warehouse which is still standing. His Cutler sorting machi ne is still intact. It is hoped that someday it can be part of the local museum . He and his neighbors used the warehouse to pack their fruit. He was the firs t orchardist in the valley to move his fruit out of the orchard by a truck - a M odel T. He and his sons built a mechanical dumper. When the warehouse was buil t in l921, it was made of the last bricks that came from the Wenatchee brick yar d.
Note | When the Spanish-style house was built, it was the beginning of problems. B rother Marvin came up with the Spanish plan with a flat room. That roof never w as completely sealed so that it would not leak. Originally, Josie had planned a nother type of house, but she must have been out voted. However, the house did have some unique features. One cupboard was vented to the basement of the house . Therefore, it was always cooler than the rest of the house. Her workroom was off the kitchen which kept a lot of dirt and clutter out of the way. Storage cu pboards were built which were helpful.
Note | The rest of the Griffith children were born at home in the Valley...Viletta, Camilla, Warren, Marcella, and Norman. Camilla died in the influenza epidemic, in l9l9, and little Norman drowned in 1924. It is thought that the Fuller Brush man left the front gate open and the child escaped the yar d and drowned in the River.
Note | John and Josie were pioneers in the true sense of the word. They arrived i n an relatively undeveloped valley, and prospered while raising their family. Gr anted that all was not easy, but it was a good life with extended family members nearby. Everyone may not have had much money, but no one was hungry, lonely, a nd have nothing to do.

(I descend from Fredrick and Ruth's daughter, Ruth (Griffith) Stewart.) I added the rest of the information that I had. I rechecked all of the dates, and as far as I know they are correct. Some dates differ from what you have, and the difference in the dates is mostly based on information I found in the Lawrence County cemetery book (what is on their tombstones). I'd love to hear how your cousin married into the John and Sarah Stewart family. They may have some information to share with the rest of the Stewart cousins (there's a group of us online). - Jean Fredrick Griffith Written by Jean Griesan 3138 West Platte Ave Colorado Springs, CO 80904 E-mail: Tom Griesan Last updated on 11 August 2002 Lewis Fredrick Griffith was born on April 3, 1790 in Bedford County, Pennsylvania. He was the son of Abel and Elizabeth (Swartz) Griffith, one of seven children. His siblings were Elizabeth, Abel, Mary, Jacob, Thomas, and John. Fredrick married Ruth Osborn in Bedford County in about 1811. Ruth was born on March 24, 1792 in Bedford County. It is unknown who Ruth's parents were. Fredrick and Ruth moved to Greenup County, Kentucky in 1819 and to Meigs Township, Adams County, Ohio in 1820. The family moved to Elizabeth Township, Lawrence County, Ohio before 1830. By 1850, the family was in Symmes Township, living on the waters of Johns Creek on 160 acres. His farm was close to that of John C. Stewart. Four of Fredrick's children married four of John C.'s children. Fredrick was a farmer. He was among the founding members of the Lawrence County Agricultural Society in November 1852. Fredrick and Ruth had the following children: 1. Benjamin, born in 1813 in Pennsylvania, who married first Prudence Lanthorn on December 13, 1832 in Lawrence County, second Elizabeth Madill on October 24, 1852 in Lawrence County, and third, a lady unknown. Benjamin died on January 11, 1874. 2. Mary Ann, born March 13, 1816 in Pennsylvania. She married Samuel Burke on January 3, 1833 in Scioto County, Ohio. Samuel was a farmer, and they lived in Symmes Township in Lawrence County. Mary died September 1, 1872 and is rumored to be buried in Symmes Township. 3. Jane Ann, born in 1817 in Pennsylvania. She married Daniel Townsend on December 28, 1848 in Lawrence County. 4. Lewis Amos "L.A.", born August 1, 1819 in Center County, Pennsylvania. L.A. married Zarelda Stewart on November 15, 1842 in Lawrence County. L.A. was active in the Lawrence County community. He was a Justice of the Peace and also on the board of the County Commissioners. He died January 31, 1878, and was buried in Griffith Cemetery, Aid Township, Lawrence County, Ohio. 5. Cynthia, born April 28, 1821 in Adams County, Ohio. She married George W. Stewart on September 12, 1841 in Lawrence County. George was a farmer, and they were financially fairly well off by the standards of the day. Cynthia died August 1, 1875 and was buried in Stewart Cemetery, Symmes Township, Lawrence County, Ohio. 6. John Oscar, born February 8, 1823 in Adams County, Ohio. He married Amy (Ama) McCartney on January 8, 1843 in Lawrence County. John worked at the Centre Furnace, as did several of his sons. He died in August of 1899 in Lawrence County. 7. Elizabeth, born in 1825, who married first a Neal, and second Lewis Lanthorn. 8. Thomas J., born January 15, 1826 in Ohio. He married Elsie Jane Townsend on February 11, 1847 in Lawrence County. Thomas served in the Civil War in the 173rd Ohio Volunteer Infantry, and was a farmer in Symmes Township during peaceful times. He died on October 31, 1907. He was buried in Macedonia Cemetery, Symmes Township, Lawrence County, Ohio. 9. David L., born in 1830 in Lawrence County, Ohio. He married Martha Jane Stewart on December 29, 1851 in Lawrence County. He was a "prominent furnace man." He died in 1881, likely in Ashland, Boyd County, Kentucky. 10. Nancy, born in 1832 in Lawrence County, Ohio, who married Adam Betchel (or Bitchell). 11. Narutha "Ruth", born April 15, 1835 in Lawrence County, Ohio. She married John H.C. Stewart on March 31, 1859 in Lawrence County. John was a farmer. They lived in Symmes Township. Ruth died on June 19, 1919 and was buried in Stewart Cemetery, Lawrence County, Ohio. 12. Naomi, born in 1838 in Lawrence County, Ohio. She married Wilson Eakins on February 11, 1869 in Lawrence County, Ohio. By 1860, old age was setting in. Fredrick and Ruth were living in the same home as their daughter, Mary, her husband, Samuel Burke, and their children. Fredrick died on December 31, 1865 in Lawrence County. Ruth died on May 8, 1868 in Lawrence County. They were buried in Griffith Cemetery in Aid Township, Lawrence County, Ohio. Their son, L.A., is buried there as well. SOURCES: 1.
