Note* Ken, thank you for replying to me. Did I understand you want to know the children of Wilie Harris and Elizabeth Hearne. ? I will be glad to share, just let me know Elizabeth is very hard to deal with as the W.T. Hearne book lists the Elizabeth , daughter of Thomas Hearne and Nancy Wilson as having died without heirs or dying young. I know there are errors in the book but so far have found no definite proof on my Elizabeth other than bible record for her and Wilie's birth. and their marriage which is in N.C. Archives. Let me know. Barbara

Ken, here are their children:
Isham Vinning Harris
Thomas H.
Loven M
Stephen R
Wiley Turner
Priscilla
Martha
Nancy
Duke Hullum
Sarah
Dove C.
James G.
Miranda G.
William

They are not listed in order of birth.

Stephen R. is my gg grandfather. He and Loven married Burris sisters in Phillips Co.,Ark. Duke Hullum was also in Phillips and died there, leaving one daughter, Elizabeth, an orphan. Stephen died in Tx., and his wife, Mary Jane, went back to Phillips Co., Ark. Thomas and his wife, Mary , went to Illinois and did Nancy and her husband, Allen Fuller. Martha m. Richard Andrews, apparently stayed in N.C. as did Dove C. who married a Rogers. Isham Vinnings died in Gonzales Co.,Tx. and married Nancy Rogers. Sarah m. an Echols and died in Tn., her children went to Gonzales and around there. James died in Madison Co.,Tn. as did William. Wilie died in l840 Madison Co.

Elizabeth died c. l855 in Madison Co.
Wilie T. was Wilie and Elizabeth's last born child, l8l9 or l820, probably in Wilson Co.,Tn.

I keep thinking that Elizabeth was daughter of Thomas Hearne and Nancy Wilson. Elizabeth b. 5-5-l77l from Isham's Bible. Wilie b. Nov. l766, also from Bible. They married l788 Montgomery Co.,N.C.
If you run across anything, please let me know. Thanks, Barbara

Subject: Elisabeth Hearne

Hi Ken, I noticed Barbara's e-mail note to you concerning Elisabeth Hearne who I think is actually the daughter of Thomas Hearne and Nancy Wilson.

I happen to be a descendant of Wilie Harris and Elisabeth Hearne through their children Isham V. Harris and Sally Harris who I believe married John Eckols.

First, there actually was a marriage record from Montgomery Co., NC (I believe from 1788 due to the marriage fees having been sent to the state capital) that reflects the marriage of Wilie Harris and Elisabeth Hearne from Montgomery Co.

Secondly, there actually is a family bible from the family of Isham V. Harris in Texas that reflects the dates of birth for Wilie Harris and Elizabeth as November 19, 1766, for Wilie, and April 5, 1771, for Elisabeth.

Third, the 1850 census for Madison Co., Tenn., corroborates that data for Elisabeth as Elizabeth Harris in that her age is listed as 79 and her place of birth as North Carolina.

1850 census District 13 of Madison Co., TN, enumerated 30 Oct. 1850:
653 653 Elizabeth Harris 79 F Value of R.E.: $1000 pb: NC
Wiley F. 31 TEN
Nancy 30 "
Susan M. 7 "
Frederick 5 "
James 3 "
John 3/12 "

Fourth, the daughter of Isham V. Harris (son of Wilie) and Nancy Rogers was named Isabella Wilson Harris as noted in the following real estate record from Texas:
Eckols---Book Q. Deed Records--Gonzales Co., Texas

Know all men by these present, that we Isham V. Harris and Nancy Harris, his wife, both of the state and county a forsaid, for and in the consideration of the affection, lvoe and esteem that we have, Isabella Wilson Eckols, our only living daughter, her heirs, have this day given, granted ,conveyed and confirmed, and by these present do give, grant, convey and confirma as a deed of gift unto the said Isabella Wilson Eckols and her heirs assigns forever a certain tract of land, It being a part of a league located in the name of Stephen Smith, deceased, his headright 14 m. up the San Marcus river from it's mouth to Smith creek 1 1/2 M. from the river, on the South side of the river containing 150 acres more or less, Joining Sebastian Huber---N. R. Eckols etc. This May 3, 1866.
Isham V. Harris
Nancy Harris

The family name Wilson did not come from the Rogers side of that couple. Nancy was the daughter of Jesse Rogers and Denise Bass of Nash Co., NC & those families are traceable to Nansemond Co., Virginia. Isham V. Harris, in turn, was the son of Isham Harris and grandson of West Harris (b. 1715).

The Isham V. Harris family certainly knew the Hearne family because Isham V. and Nancy Harris's daughter Aurelia P. Harris married Whitman H. Hearn in Madison Co., Tenn., January 11, 1847. Also, Wiley Harris's family had been in Wilson Co., Tenn., in the mid-1810s.

I have also seen tax lists for Montgomery Co., NC, in the late 1700s and it certainly seems to me that Elisabeth Hearne was indeed the daughter of Thomas Hearne and Nancy Wilson.

Note: (Research):Most of what I have on Edmond Hearne came from A Brief History and Genealogy of the Hearne Family written by William Thomas Hearne in 1895 and revised in 1907. Hearne has his detractors but I have found it a source of many leads. Admittedly, there are errors but you must keep in mind that the history was written over a hundred years ago by a man who was devoted to his task. It was written in an age when COURTESY was the 11th commandment. He included everything that was sent to him unless he knew for sure that it was in error. The book does not have an index yet. There are people working on that. You may be able to find it on the Web. I have written down what WTH put in his 1907 edition, pages 614ff. Then I have sought records to document or refute his findings. The name Edmond goes back to the very beginning of the Hearne's in America. The first Hearne in our line, called William, the Merchant had 2 sons. Thomas, the younger had 6 sons and 6 daughters. His 4th son was Thomas who had 8 sons and 3 daughters. His fourth son was Edmond. Little in known about him. WTH gives his birth as 1744/1750. in Montgomery Co, NC (which was formed in 1779 from Anson County.) and that he has a son named Edmond who married Miss Mode. WTH covers his descendents quite extensively from NC to Tn to Mo to Tx. (Page 540ff, 1907 ed.) Now, this Edmond had a brother named Stephen M, born in 1748. He was a soldier in the Revolution. He married first Mary Hurley and the had 3 children. The oldest was William S Hearn, born in 1770 in Randolph Co, NC. He married Rutha Skein, Nov 29, 1799 in Rowan Co, NC.They had 5 boys and 7 girls. His 4th son was Edmund. He was born in 1809 at Wilson Co, Tn. He married Elizabeth Dwyer, 16 Sep 1830 in Wilson Co, Tn (1850 Wilson Co, Tn CR: Edmond 40, b in Tn; Elizabeth, 37 b. in Va; Edmund. 20, Caroline,15, Eliza, 13, Sophia Ann, 7, James L, 10 mos. John D. Dwire, 12).......On page 616, this info is given: "Edmond, son of William and Rutha Hearne, married Polly Hurley. Children, Eveline, Sophronia, born 1846, Laura J. born 1848, William T. born 1851; George W, born 1854; Edmond M. born 1858. Eveline maried James Robinson, Sophronia married a Mr. Thomas; William T. married a Miss Lisk, has 2 children. George W. married a Miss Thomas. This information was preceeded by an explanation from WTH: "What follws was furnished me by Noah w. Hearne of Eldorado, Montgomery Co, NC. It is somewhat disconnected, and not complete, but is valued, especially by those of whom he treats........" Hope you find this helpful. Mildred Sasso

Note:
- Our Wlliam is said to have been a Cromwell suporter. The following information, when considered together with his date of immigration, lends credence to that conjecture! 1649 King Charles I has his head chopped off by Parliament and the country is ruled by Parliament, its Army and General Oliver Cromwell. The Scots and the Irish want Charles' son Charles II as king. 1650 King Charles II is crowned in Scotland 1651 Cromwell defeats Charles at Worcester. Charles escapes to France. Parliament is incompetent, Cromwell becomes Lord Protector and rules as an unwilling dictator 1658 Cromwell dies of malaria at 59 and his son Richard becomes Lord Protector. Richard is a "weak and mild man" and the Army turns him out. 1659 Richard resigns. Most English people now want Charles II back. 1661 Parliament recalls Charles II from Holland. The monarchy returns to a throne in debt and without finance. To alleviate this problem, The Speaker of the House of Commons presents a Bill for confirmation of an Act for a "Free and Voluntary Present" (from the people of England) As an interesting historical side note, this 'Free and Voluntary Present' didn't quite cover the king's needs apparently ..... as a two shilling per chimney "hearth tax" was instituted the very next year!

NOTE: It was in 1689 that Lord Baltimore lost the Calvert family's hold on the province of Maryland, and the province came under the rule of King William and Queen Mary. The overwhelming majority of the names signed to this address were Presbyterians, along with the names of 15 or 20 Church of England men (like Huett, Revell, Dixon, Coulbourne, Horsey, Chambers, Dent, Elzey, Tull, Waller, Smith, Dashiell, Brereton and Bozman) . None are identified as Quakers.

Melissa (and the list): your question was the same one I had a few years ago when I first came across this record. The short answer is that there were two William Hearnes living in Somerset at the same time. One was the much more prominent William "the Merchant;" and one was a much more obscure "other" William Hearne. To date, no evidence has surfaced of which I am aware that the two were in any way related.

The marriage of Katherin Maltis was to the more obscure William. If you can get a copy of the book "A Somerset Sampler," the story of the "other" William Hearne is on pages 158-160. Quoting from that source:

"William Herne (Hearne, Hearon, Heron, Hern), 'taylor' of Mattapony Hd., is first mentioned as being in Somerset Co. on 9 Aug. 1671 when he caused his banns of matrimony with Katherine Mallis (Maltis), widow, to be set up at the courthouse. 'The court being informed that the said Katherine goes under the notion of John Pikes' (Peake's) wife, of Mattapony, orders same taken down and orders said Herne to be taken into custody until he give security for his good behaviour.' William Herne and Katherine Mallis were m. 31 Dec. 1672 by 'Robert Maddocks, Clerke.' On 12 Apr. 1687 William Whittington wrote to James Heath: 'One thing I forgot which is to issue out a citation of John Peake late of Somerset County Dec'd to answer to such objections etc. as shall be against him before the Hon.ble etc. putt in by John Sherry who marryed the only daughter called Sarah of John Peake dec'd as aforesaid and sent with the Rest of the papers from the Prov.ll Court.' (M.S.A, Judicials, Somerset Co. Court 1670-71, p. 193; M.S.A., Somerset Co., Deeds, IKL:106; Whittington to Heath, 12 Apr. 1687, M.S.A, Prerog. Court, Testamentary Proceedings 13:479)"

In 1692/3, apparently bankrupt and not being able to pay his debts, William and Katherine left Somerset, selling all they owned. And it appears that he died in 1694, for "on 28 Sept. 1694 an inventory of the 'goods Chattles & Credits of William Heron late of (?), Old England mariner Dated as it was taken and appraised at the Towne of Oxford in Maryland ... the whole Sume amounting to five pound seven shillings eight pence..."
