OBITUARY
Post #10 Snohomish

The date of the funeral of Eldridge MORSE, who died at the Snohomish hospital Monday, has not been set. Arrangements are awaiting the arrival of relatives.

Eldrige MORSE was born on a farm near Wallingford, Ct. in 1847. At an early age he began studying and entered the army at New York harbor at the age of 17 years. He was a member of Co. C of the Tenth US engineer’s battalion and was with the army of the Potomac for 18 months and was present at the surrender of Lee to Grant at Richmond. From there he went to San Francisco, Ca. where he received an honorable discharge from the army. He then went to visit his old home at Wallingford, after which he went to Albion, Ia., where he taught school and practiced law and was admitted to the bar at Iowa in 1869. He next attended the University of MI from which he graduated in 1870.

He married one of his oldest Iowa pupils, Mollie TURNER, and then came to Seattle where he stayed a few months before arriving at Snohomish in 1972. He took up a homestead near this city which is now known as the McLaughlin place. He practiced law in Snohomish for a few yers and in 1876 stared the first newspaper published on the Sound, the Northern Star in this city. He took Fanny OLIVER as his Second wife, but divorced her shortly after marriage. He then took his third wife, in 1887 who died in 1900.

Through Mr. MORSE's influence the old Athenaeum, better known as the Cathcart building, was built on the corner of Ave. D and First street. This building was used for a library, a theater and a museum.

For the past few years he has been a member of the local G.A.R. and took an active part in all patriotic programs. After running the newspaper he retired from public life and since 1888 he has been living on a farm near Snohomish and in his house in town, spending nearly all his spare time studying.

He leaves a son Ed C. MORSE, by his first wife, who is now a mining engineer at Republic,Wa. By his third wife he has a daughter, Mrs. C.H. Matthews, of Markham, and four sons, John of Seattle, and Arthur, Harley and Roland all living at Snohomish.

I am a descendant from Captain Abraham Kuykendall with whom Charles Mullins served in Rutherford Co. NC during the Revolutionary War.
I too, came across the newspaper article in "Bridges to the Past" and learned that Charles Mullins was in his regiment.
Based on the Pension file for Charles Mullins, it is my understanding that the initial "S" before a pension file number indicates a spouse's pension. I do not have a copy of the actual file, only what was in the newspaper article. I am interested in learning the wife's name if anyone has seen the actual files in Washington, DC.
I understand from the files and from your website, that his family is unknown but has anyone investigated the file for his spouse?
I have several names of the men who served in Capt Kuykendall (Kirkendall)'s unit and am in the process of putting all of this together for a genealogical society. At this point, I'm not sure whether it will be Buncombe County or Henderson County, North Carolina where Abraham Kuykendall is buried.
Any information you are willing to share will be much appreciated.

2. Charles Mullins Jr. b. 18 July 1749 Pennsylvania. Charles Mullins and Daniel Mullins are in the 1779 Randolph County, North Carolina Tax List. In his Revolutionary War pension application, Charles Mullins stated he was born 18 July 1749 in Pennsylvania and was "principally" raised in Virginia and during the Revolution he moved to the Broad River and settled in Rutherford County, North Carolina and entered service 1 Jan. 1780 under Capt. Abraham Kuykendall and after the Revolution he lived in North Carolina for 30 years then moved to Indiana for 9 years then to Calloway County, Kentucky where he applied for his pension 19 Nov. 1832. In 1794, Charles Mullins Jr. of Rutherford County, North Carolina, and Charles Mullins Sr., of Halifax County, Virginia, made a deed to John Adams Sr. for "197 acres on Little Coleman Creek adjoining Joseph Jones, John Angus, Joseph Hewell Jr., and on the road that leads from Boyd's Ferry to Pryor's Ferry, being land where Charles Mullins Sr. now lives by virtue of an exception for life, a deed made by Charles Mullins Sr. to his son Charles Mullins Jr. which was recorded in Halifax County," Virginia. "Now Charles Mullins Sr. to revise the said deed in favor of his son Charles Mullins Jr. and joins in said deed of sale, releasing the exception of a life right in said land."

3. Daniel Mullins b. ca 1752 Virginia md Elizabeth (maiden name unknown). Daniel served three years in the Revolutionary War, most of the time as a private, in the 5th and 11th Regiment under Col. William Russell and Captain Thomas Wills; also 15th Regiment under Major Gustavius B. Wallace in June 1778; by Dec. under Col. Daniel Morgan; Col. Buford; and he was at Valley Forge. They are believed to have had the following children:

Daniel moved to Warren County, Tennessee by 1812 and appeared in the tax list. In the 1820 Warren County, Tennessee Census, his household consisted of 6 males and 3 females. In the 1840 Warren County, Tennessee Census, his household consisted of 5 males and 3 females. On 15 Jan. 1841, Daniel Mullins witnessed the sale of land near Short Mountain, Cannon County, Tennessee by Ezekiel Mullins and Joseph Mullins. There is a story in the old McGuffey Reader that is family lore in the Mullins family. It seems Daniel went to town for supplies, leaving his wife and children at home. They were asleep one night when Didema suddenly awakened---noises---and whispered to the children to slip out the window. She was the last and so large she could barely get through the window. But they all got out and ran to hide in the forest in a huge tree trunk. Next morning they found that Indians had ransacked and destroyed everything in the house. Daniel and Didema had the following known children:
