Dear Ken:

I was just checking back over the Mullins family genealogy and saw your recent addition to the descendants of Charles Mullins (the Rev.War Pensioner). Charles Mullins jr. was the father of my great-great-grandfather Wiley Matthew Mullins born in Rutherford County North Carolina in 1787 and died in Iowa in 1851. Charles Mullins moved around 1815 with three of his sons (two remaining in North Carolina, another Charles and Daniel): Jonathon, Wiley, and Jonas first to Indiana (Charles lived in Orange County in 1820) and Wiley lived in Lawrence County (just to the north). In about 1825 Wiley moved to Henderson County, Tennessee, and Charles probably went to live with his son Jonas in McCracken County, Kentucky. Wiley then moved from Tennessee to Kentucky in about 1837 and remained there until he moved to Iowa in 1849.

It appears that we are both descendants of Charles Mullins. Still have not been able to deduce who Charles Mullins', Sr... father was and when he arrived in Pennsylvania. I am fairly certain that the Mullins family came from France by way of County Clare, Ireland, where they probably lived from about 1680 to 1730. Have you done any research in County Clare to determine whether there is a record of the Huguenots who settled there from France?

Regards,

Jim Mullins

CHARLES MULLINS PENSION WAS $31.66 SEMI-ANNUALLY

Abstracted from the pension file of Charles Mullins, National Archives File No. S-30610. This soldier was allowed a pension in the amount of $31.66 semi-annually, effective from the 4th day of March, 1832. The 1790 census of Rutherford County, NC lists Charles Mullin(s) in the 10th Company, with one male over 16 years of age, three males under 16 years of age, and four females.

CHARLES MULLINS

In October of 1832, Charles Mullins, then 83 years of age, appeared before the Circuit Court of Calloway County, Ky. And made application for a pension for his services during the Revolutionary War.

Mullins stated that he was born in the State of Pennsylvania, on July 18, 1749, but that he was "principally raised in the State of Virginia." During the Revolutionary War, he moved to Rutherford County, N.C., where he settled on Broad River.

His first tour of military service began as a volunteer on January 1st, 1780, under Captain Abraham Kuykendall and Lieutenant Robert McMinn, in Col. McLain's Regiment, for the purpose of "opposing the Tories." We were kep in service, and continued to "scour the country and watch and check the movements of the Tories" until February, when by order of Col. McLain, Capt Kuykendall and Lt. Stephen Langford raised a "Company of horses which I joined immediately." This company was raised for the purpose of "bringing in disorderly persons" and in ranging the county and watching the movements of the Indians. This tour of duty lasted for about three months.

About the middle of May, Capt. Kuykendall ordered his company out again, this time as foot soldiers. They marched to the Indian frontier where they joined some other forces at Fort Hampton under the command of an officer by the name of Grant. This tour of duty continued throughout the remainder of the year (1780) during which time the troops "ranged thru the country round" scouting and guarding against surprise Indian attacks. Part of the time their company was stationed at Capshaw's Fort, and at Mills Station, and since all the troops were militiamen, they were occasionally permitted to go home for a few days at a time.

After returning home from the Indian frontier about the last of December, 1780, the militiamen remained under the command of Capt. Kuykendall and were subject to call as the occasion demanded for the purpose of "watching the movements of the Tories, checking the incursions of the Indians, annoying the foraging or scouting parties of the British, and guarding and conducting prisoners" until the first of May, 1781.

In the month of May, 1781, Charles Mullins volunteered in a company commanded by Capt. (Giving?) (Ewing?) of South Carolina, who reported to the Army of Gen. Green at the Seige of Ninety-Six. Here the company was placed under Col. Levi Casey who was ofo the "line of Col. Henderson," during the battle at Ninety-Six. About two days before the Seige of Ninety-Six, Mullins was granted a furlough to go home where he remained sick until about the first of August, 1781.

After recovering from illness, Mullins then rejoined Gen. Green's Army at the High Hills of Santee where he joined Captain Ewell Lamkins company. Captain Lamkin was also from Rutherford County, and the Lieutenant was William Ross.

The company remained at Santee on scouting duty, until General Green moved to Eutaw Springs. Capt. Lamkin's company then proceeded to Camden, where they crossed the Wateree River and proceeded down the south side of the river to join Gen. Green for the expected battle at Eutaw Springs.

"We marched to Reynolds Mill about 15 miles below Camden where we were advised by the main Army to return by the way of Camden as we were in danger of the British horse. When we got to Camden we were ordered to take charge of the baggage which Gen. Green had sent to Camden for safety, and here we rejoined Gen. Green's army." At Santee, they were placed under command of Col. Malmedy, a Frenchman.

"I had been about four months with the Army when I was again taken sick and put in the hospital at Camden where I remained several weeks before being permitted to go home on furlough which was granted by Lt. Ross. As my beloved Colonel Malmedy was about on some business and was shortly killed in a duel, and my Capt. Was sick and out of place, I got no written discharge, since Ross did not consider himself authorized to give me one."

Mullins arrived at his home in Rutherford County about the end of December, 1781, and remained sick until February or March.

Upon his recovering, Charles Mullins enlisted in a company commanded by Captain Jacob Vinzant and proceeded with Colonel Walker to guard a company of Tory prisoners to Salisbury, N.C. They were relieved of this duty and returned home in the Spring of 1782.

Mullins stated that he did not know of anyone in the local vicinity who would verify his military service. "They are swept away by the ravages of the last half century, or if any be still surviving, they are living in places to me unknown.

He further stated that he remained in N.C. for about 30 years, after which he moved to the State of Indiana where he remained about 9 years, and from there he had moved to Calloway County, Kentucky where he had been living for several years.

He presented as character witnesses, Rev. Hugh Gilbert and Arthur H. Davis, both residents of the same county, who stated that they were well acquainted with Charles Mullins and believed that the facts he had given were true.

There is no information in the pension file as to the date of death of Charles Mullins, nor, any information about his family. It is possible that some of his children, who would have been married before he migrated to Indiana, remained in the Rutherford area.2

Charles Mullins and Daniel Mullins appear in the 1779 Randolph County, North Carolina Tax List.1

On 14 August 1767, Charles Mullin of Halifax Co., Virginia, deeded to Charles Mullin, Jr. of same, for natural love and affection and for his better maintenance, 227 acres on the north branch of Coleman's creek, provided that Charles Mullins, Sr. & Mary, his wife, have their living and maintenance off said land and premises during their lives.2

In 1794, Charles Mullins Jr. of Rutherford County, North Carolina, and Charles Mullins Sr. of Halifax County, Virginia, made a deed to John Adams Sr. for "197 acres on Little Coleman Creek adjoining Joseph Jones, John Angus, Joseph Hewell Jr., and on the road that leads from Boyd's Ferry to Pryor's Ferry, being land where Charles Mullins Sr. now lives by virtue of an exception for live, a deed made by Charles Mullins Sr. to his son Charles Mullins Jr. which was recorded in Halifax County. Virginia. Now Charles Mullins Sr. to revise the said deed in favor of his son Charles Mullins jr. and joins in said deed of sale, releasign the exception of a life right in said land."1

Daniel Coleman Mullins was the son of Daniel Mullins and Elizabeth ? (w-o Daniel Mullins).1 Daniel Coleman Mullins was born circa 1785 at Virginia.1,2,3,4 Daniel married Oridema Lyle, daughter of John Lyle, between 1805 and 1809 at Rutherford Co., North Carolina.1,5 Daniel died in 1857 at Short Mountain, Cannon Co., Tennessee.1

Daniel moved to Warren Co., Tennessee, by 1812 and appeared in the tax list. In the 1820 Warren Co., Tennessee Census his household consisted of 6 males and 3 females. In the 1840 Warren Co., Tennessee Census his household consisted of 5 males and 3 females.

On 15 January 1841, Daniel Mullins witnessed the sale of land near Short Mountain, Cannon County, Tennessee by Ezekiel Mullins and Joseph Mullins.

There is a story in the Old McGuffey Reader that is family lore in the Mullins family. It seems Daniel went to town for supplies, leaving his wife and children at home. They were asleep one night when Didema suddenly awakened, heard noises, and whispered to the children to slip out the window. She was the last and so large she could barely get through the window. But they all got out and ran to hide in the forest in a hugh tree stump. The next morning they found that Indians had ransacked and destroyed everything in the house.

On 20 February 1840, Daniel C. Mullins deeded 15 acres on the head waters of the east fork of Stone's River to Job Stephens.6 Daniel C. Mullins deeded 50 acres to Robert K. Stephens on 3 Dec. 1840.7 On 30 December Hiram Morris deeded 22 acres on Sycamore Fork of the Clear Rock to Daniel C. Mullins.8 Daniel C. Mullins deeded 20 acres on Cyemore fork of clear fork to William B. Nokes (believed to be brother or Thomas Nokes Jr., husband of Susan Mullins) on 1 September 1841. On 23 October 1846, Daniel C. Mullins deeded 50 acres in the 9th District to James Smithson and William S. Clark.9 I am assuming that this is Daniel C. Sr. although some of these transactions could be Daniel C. Jr.1

Daniel was listed as the head of a family on the 1810 Census at Rutherford Co., North Carolina. Enumerated were:
