The Tanner Family
With the
generous help of other researchers, I have traced my Tanner family line back to
Thomas Tanner born in the late 1600's in Hampshire,
England. My Tanner line
appear to have lived in the Boldre – Beaulieu area of Hampshire and
several of the Tanner men’s occupations were connected to the water,
either as fisherman, fish vendors or involved in boat construction.
Five
Generations later William Tanner and his wife Anne Etheridge immigrated to South
Australia with their three youngest children. Their
youngest son Eli Tanner and his wife Eliza Jane Gill had 10 children. The
family connection with the sea continued in Australia
as both Eli and at least one son, Thomas were described as fisherman.
Settling in
the Yatala area of Port Adelaide they did temporarily move to Richmond,
an inner surburb of Melbourne, Victoria
around the mid 1880’s possibly chasing work. While living in Melbourne
several of Eli and Eliza Jane’s children married but most of them moved
back with their wives and children to the Port
of Adelaide area of South
Australia. But
both Eli and Eliza Jane’s daughters never returned to South
Australia permanently. Mary Anne Tanner, their
younger daughter and my Great Grandmother, settled in Richmond
after marrying James Sheehan in 1893. Their other daughter Eliza Jane Tanner
also married in Richmond but she
and husband Francis Corey eventually moved to Western
Australia.
