Introduction

Kincaids in the American Civil War is a compilation of Kincaids who served during the conflict between the Northern and Southern states from 1861 to 1865, Union and Confederate. Entries are arranged by state alphabetically within the Confederate States of America, then broken down by Artillery, Cavalry, and Infantry, with Confederate Troops listed at the beginning of the Confederate section. States are arranged in the same manner for the United States or Union with United States Regular Army listed at the beginning of the Union section.

The initial date for each entry is 1861 or the beginning of the American Civil War. All annotations to the initial citation will be placed in brackets within or below the initial citation. Where possible known ancestors will have the corresponding DNA sample number placed in brackets after the subject’s last name and will be linked to vetting posts listed on the Kincaid DNA Project website, or to similar compilations within the Kincaid Research page.

The sources for this compilation are: United States Civil War Soldiers Index; United States Civil War Service Records of Confederate Soldiers, 1861-1865; United States Confederate Officers Card Index, 1861-1865 and individual state records of Confederate soldiers.

There are currently 255 individuals listed under Confederate units and 553 individuals listed under the Union. Some individuals are listed more than once if they served in more than one unit.

1861    John Howard Kincaid, [2564] Private, Company D, Thirty-fourth Regiment, Texas Cavalry (Alexander’s), Confederate. [John Howard was mortally wounded through the hips by a yankee mini-ball on the evening of the 9th April 1864, in the Battle of Pleasant Hill. As morning of the 9th came, General Taylor ordered his army forward to pursue the retreating Union army, defeated the day before at Mansfield, led by General Banks. The Confederates made contact in the afternoon at Pleasant Hill and opened their attack on the Union's left flank driving them back untill a Federal counterattack repulses them. The Federals push back the Confederate line and sends them into disarray. John's depleted division ( Polignac's ) was sent in to reinforce the retreating Confederate right, between Walker's Division in the Southern center and Green's cavalry, on the left. They were able to drive back the Union advance and also take back some lost ground, but confusion and darkness ended the day. John was retrieved from the field and died of his wounds two weeks later on 23 April 1864, in a Confederate field hospital, outside Mansfield, Louisiana. He is thought to be buried in a common grave with 65 other confederate casualties at the Mansfield Cemetery, Mansfield, DeSoto Parish, Louisiana.] [Son of Alvis Kincaid & Rhoda Moad, who was a son of John Kincaid & Nancy Young.] [Source, Gary S.
