When Lizzie was married to Ernest Westley Crago, who was a miner, she suffered the loss of her right eye when standing too close to a dynamite blast. She and Ernest Westley Crago divorced in 1908.

Lizzie's second husband, Arthur Cloudt, also worked for a mining company. Twin Peaks Mining and Milling Company was located near the now-ghost town of York, Arizona, in the northern part of the state near New Mexico. She and Arthur Cloudt divorced in 1920, and she never remarried.

Lizzie Canfield was a storyteller. She spent many hours relating family history to her young and curious grand-neice, Mary Frances Parsons, granddaughter of Lizzie's sister, Mary Frances Canfield-Van Horn. Mary Frances listened carefully to all of the stories "Aunt Lizzie" shared with her and held them in her heart, remembering minute details down to names, ages, and multiple marriages. In later years, it was those very stories that first came from Lizzie Canfield that inspired Mary's daughter, Susan, to begin documenting the family history. And many of those same stories have been shared on this website.
