--------------------

From "The Sapulpa Herald," Tuesday, September 2, 2003

JAMES FORREST FANNING

James Forrest Fanning, owner/auctioneer of the Sapulpa Sale Barn, passed on to be with his Lord early Saturday, Aug. 30, 2003.

Jim was born June 24, 1919 in a log cabin six miles west of Sand Springs. The oldest of seven boys, he grew up on a farm working with his father in the oil field business. He learned to drive a team of horses (and wagon) very young.

Jim graduated from high school at Olive.

Each year to celebrate his birthday, his dad put him on a calf, a tradition which eventually launched his career of professional bull riding, bronc riding and steer wrestling.

In 1940, a little banged up, Jim began a nine-year career with the U.S. military, where he achieved rank as sergeant. He served his country as a hand-to-hand combat instructor on eight different Army and Air Force bases. Jim also served in the Phillippines near the end of World War II. He continued to ride bulls throughout his military career.

Jim married Marie Hill on Oct. 30, 1947. They enjoyed 57 years of life together.

After many injuries, his rodeo career gave way to other careers, including horse/livestock trader, auctioneeer, sale barn owner and operator and horse racetrack owner and operator. In his spare time he enjoyed building and repairing roofs, he wrote a newspaper column and he loved to brag about his children, including grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Simyard and Vina Jane Fanning, brothers Arnold, Paul, Millard, Joe and Kenneth, and son Billy Ray.

Born on Aug. 23, 1962 to Loren David and Mary Fletcher. He was an electrician by trade and it came very natural for him. Lee was employed by Tulsa County Parks and Recreations Department for the last six years. He was an avid bowler and a longtime owner of Lee's Hot Wheels. Lee was a gentle, loving man with an infectious laugh and quick wit. As an electrician, he would not compromise his integrity. Rich in family and numerous friends, he taught us to live each day to the fullest because we are never promised tomorrow. He enjoyed people but he cherished quiet times and life with his soul mate, Penney.

He was made an honorary member of the Scottish Club of Tulsa. He was their sole electrician for the Scottish Games held at Chandler Park annually.

Lee is survived by the love of his life, Penney Matney; three sons, Edward Lee Fletcher and his wife Jewel, Kyle and Cameron Fletcher; one grandchild, Hailee Renee Fletcher, who was Papa's "Little Chick."

He is also survived by his mother, Mary Barnett of Oakhurst; six brothers, Chris Fletcher of Oolagah, Bill Fletcher of Tulsa, Paxton Fletcher, Patrick Fletcher, Alvin Fletcher and Alford Fletcher, all of Oakhurst; one sister, Marvella Harjo of Oakhurst.

Lee is preceded in death by his father Loren David Fletcher.

Services will be held Friday, June 11, at 2 p.m., at the Welcome Home Freewill Baptist Church in Oakhurst, the Rev. Fred Redfern officiating.

Pallbearers will be Edward, Kyle and Cameron Fletcher, Patrick Fletcher, Chad Hagwood and John Harjo. Honorary pallbearers will include Alvin, Chris, Paxton and Alford Fletcher and the employees of the Tulsa County Parks and Recreations Department.

The family would like to thank everyone who has called or come by to offer condolences, sent food or flowers or maybe just thought of the family with prayers. We greatly appreciate it all.

We will have a void in our lives that will never be replaced, but he is still with us in spirit and our daily life. His son, Kyle, said that "God needed an electrician," so the electrical displays during storms should be outstanding.

Services will be under the direction of Smith Funeral Home.
