Nevin Lane
Nevin Lane was found dead in his apartment in Tulsa Wednesday, Arpil 14, 2004. He would have been 57 on April 17. No public services are planned. Nevin served in the Air Force in Vietman and the Philippines and his family will carry his ashes to be interred in the Fort Gibson National Military Cemetery.
Nevin suffered from paranoid schizophrenia and severe diabetes. Like most sufferers of this devastating brain disease, Nevin sometimes exhibited behaviors that made those around him uncomfortable and even afraid. Nonetheless, he was a part of our family we will never forget. He was stubborn, demanding and sometimes angry, but he was also funny, warm and loving. He hugged and kissed us too hard, maybe, and said things that were odd and left us shaking our heads. But he played with the children so exuberantly that would would have to chase the lot outside.
He was generous to a fault. In Sapulpa, riding home from work one day, he encountered two girls delivering papers on foot and simply gave them his bicycle. He told us it made him feel good. And he astounded us with his acumen with words during occasional parlor games such as Balderdash. Amongst his belongings we found several long lists of books Nevin had read or intended to read including "The Iliad," "Don Quixote" and works by Shakespeare. Neven was cited in an article in the Tulsa World in 1994 for receiving the top award as the Volunteer of the Year for his work with the Tulsa Community Food Bank. He had never missed a day. Nevin wasn't stupid or unintelligent, he was simply very ill.
He was also very religious and sometime in early 2001 an irresponsible itinerant preacher convinced him to stop taking his medications and seeing his doctors. That began the final three years of his slide into the ravages of his disease. Though he rejected us and our efforts we attempted to get him help through the district attorney's mental health division, through the court system, through the police, through the mental health and medical network of Tulsa. Our efforts brought Nevin no lasting help or protection. The current laws concerning the rights of individuals do not sufficiently take into account the necessity for families of the mentally ill to care for them even against their wills. There often is no legal or medical protection for these victims until they commit acts of violence. We, Nevin's family, find ourselves in the unfortunate position of being grateful he died before he hurt anyone.
Our son, brother, uncle, cousin died alone and we grieve for his wasted life and his suffering and loneliness during the past three years and before. We ask for anyone wishing to do something in his memory to financially support those organizations working toward better laws and systems that would allow families to protect their mentally ill members. One such organization is NAAH, the National Alliance on Mental Illness whose Tulsa number is 918-582-8264. Another is CREOKS in Sapulpa, 15 East Dewey, 74066.
Nevin's father, Robert Lane, died in October of 2003. Nevin leaves behind his mother Virginia Nevin Lane; his two sisters Jana Rodgers and husband Bob, of Sapulpa, and Judy Lane, of Ft. Worth; his brother Rand Lane and wife Rhonda, of Phoenix; his aunt Shirley Plemons and husband Bill, of Tulsa; aunt Mildred Reynolds, of Tulsa; uncle Norman Lane and wife Virginia, of Allen, Texas; aunt Doris Anderson and husband Durwood, of California, nephew Lane Tharp and wife Donna, of Plano, Texas; nephew Shohn Rodgers and wife Jennifer, of Tulsa; niece Shelley Burrow and husband Paul of Sapulpa, and the grandchildren of his family Ashley, Alyssa and Deven Tharp; Shalyn and Justin Lane, of Phoenix; Maison and Taylor Burrow, of Sapulpa, and Lily Grace Rodgers, of Tulsa; also numerous cousins throughout the surrounding states. And, he leaves behind a grieving longtime friend, Sandi Cunningham of Tulsa.
Nevin Alan, awaken the heavens each morning now with your hoots of laughter and your glorious smile!
SAPULPA -- Robert Lane, 86, retired, died Saturday. No services planned. Smith.
From "The Sapulpa Herald," Monday, October 6, 2003
ROBERT WOODROW LANE
Robert Woodrow Lane died Saturday, Oct. 4, 2003 at St. John Sapulpa. Mr. Lane was born Feb. 27, 1917 and grew up in Heavener where, he boasted, he managed to stay barefoot until he had to wear shoes for high school. At Mr. Lane's request there is no public service planned though family members will be gathering in his memory.
Mr. Lane had a full career as a Federal Civil Service Engineer in the Tulsa District after graduating from Oklahoma A&M. He met Virginia Nevin, of Sapulpa, during their college years in Stillwater and they were married Aug. 31, 1940. Robert served two years with the United States Navy Seabees during World War II designing aircraft landing strips on South Pacific islands then returned to his position in Tulsa after the war. At his retirement in 1972, Mr. Lane was recognized for excellence in engineering design and for his skill as coordinator on such extensive water control projects as the McClellan-Kerr Arkansas River Navigation System, the Wichita Valley Center Floodway System and Webbers Falls Lock and Dam projects. He also had a supervisory role in the design and construction of portions of Keystone Dam.
As the memory and health of this husband and father faded, the memories enjoyed by his family include such shenanigans as being awakened early on the Fourth of July by cherry bombs exploding ourside our bedroom windows while Dad cackled at our responses; being packed into the old Packard at 5:30 a.m. only to awaken on the road an hour later as Dad drove down the highway, surrounded by the glow of a brilliant sunrise, on the first day of vacations exploring the canyons of the west; Dad as a human diving board for four happy kids on picnics at Heyburn Lake and Christmas mornings filled with the surprises Dad had so gleefully hidden from us. We have recent memories of him nonchalantly wearing a tiny party hat at a great-grandchild's birthday, as well as one of the same teasing great-grandfather toppling into the Christmas tree then jumping back up to assure an embarrassed great-granddaughter that he was just fine. We have so many memories to sustain us through this time of grieving.
Our family extends gratitude and appreciation to the staff of Pleasant Manor Nursing Home for their care of Mr. Lane the past six months, and to the staff at St. John Sapulpa for the tenderness with which they shepherded his passage out of this life. Thank you from his wife and companion of 63 years, Virginia Nevin Lane; his daughter, Jana Rodgers and husband, Bob, of Sapulpa; daughter, Judith Lane, of Ft. Worth; sons, Nevin Lane, of Tulsa, and Rand Lane and wife, Rhonda, of Phoenix; two sisters, Mildred Reynolds, of Tulsa, and Doris Anderson and her husband, Dur, of California, and brother, Norman Lane and wife Virginia, of Allen, Texas.
Robert had the pleasure of loving five grandchildren: Justin Lane, of Colorado Springs, Colo.; Lane Tharp and wife, Donna, of Plano, Texas; Shohn Rodgers and wife, Jennifer, of Tulsa; Shelly Burrow and her husband, Paul, of Sapulpa, and Shalyn Lane, of Phoenix. His great-grandchildren are Ashley, Alyssa, and Deven Tharp of Plano, Texas; Maison and Taylor Burrow, of Sapulpa, and the newest and littlest, Lily Grace Rodgers, of Tulsa.
Mr. Lane is also survived by numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.
No services are planned.

This gracious lady will be deeply missed by many. She loved to surround herself with family and friends. Her greatest joy was doting on her son and daughter claiming "she raised two perfect kids." But when it came to her grandchildren, she loved them more than anything. She had a license plat on her car that said, "As Me About My Grandkids" and that's exactly what she wanted you to do. She was blessed with several great-grandchildren whom she cherished. Each of them was special to her in their own unique way.
She also enjoyed spending time with her brothers and sisters. She was the oldest of seven and shared many happy memories with each sibling.
Blanche loved her role as a homemaker. She loved Rower gardens seemed to make everything grow that she planted. She loved cooking and was known for her delicious pies. She especially liked to decorate for each upcoming holiday. Her home was always a haven to those who visited. She had a way about her that made all feel comfortable and welcomed.
As the sparkle went out of this amazing lady all of those left behind cried and said she's gone, she's gone. But in that same exact moment, Blanche was being welcomed into glory with anxious shouts from loved ones gone before, she's here, she's here. She's finally home where she belongs.
