MARILYN ORDONEZ
From "The Sapulpa Herald," Sapulpa, Oklahoma, Monday, April 19, 2004

CAR CHASE ENDS IN TRAGEDY
By BOB SHERRILL, Herald Staff Writer

BRISTOW -- A Wisconsin fugitive apparently was attempting to elude Oklahoma Highway Patrol troopers when he lost control of his vehicle Friday afternoon, killing one of his passengers.

Marilyn Ordonez, 27, of Milwaukee, Wis., was pronounced dead at the scene of the accident at the Bristow exit of the Turner Turnpike. All three occupants of the 1997 Oldsmobile, including driver Cesar Lira, 33, and his 7-year-old daughter, Sabrina, were ejected from the vehicle when it overturned violently, an OHP spokesman said.

Both were transported to Tulsa hospitals and admitted with non life-threatening injuries, the OHP said.

Ordonez is believed to be the mother of the child, and the OHP said the girl is expected to be placed in the hands of her grandparents this weekend.

There are conflicting accounts of Lira's status as a fugitive.

An earlier report indicated the Lira had escaped custody of sheriff's deputies in Milwaukee, and a second account reported that Lira had fled from a federal prison in Wisconsin.

Details of the pursuit and the probable cause that started the high-speed chase were not available at Herald press time, but the pursuit apparently began near the Stroud exit with an OHP trooper working with a drug interdiction team on the turnpike.

The OHP said the trooper was not aware of a child in the fleeing vehicle and that Lira had successfully avoided "stop sticks" placed on the roadway in an effort to disable the vehicle.

"Stop sticks" are triangular-shaped packages of hollow spikes that penetrate the tires of the fleeing vehicle and allows air to escape the tires gradually.

The fleeing vehicle attempted to exit the turnpike at Bristow, but the vehicle was traveling so fast that it slid through the exit ramp, striking a turnpike sign.

The vehicle then traveled approximately 75 yards down an embankment and a ditch and crossed both entrance and exit lanes of the Bristow interchange.

The vehicle, still traveling at a high rate of speed, then struck an embankment. The front of the vehicle dug into the ground and the vehicle flipped into the air, the OHP said.

Lira is expected to be booked into the Creek County Jail on charges of murder following his release from the hospital.

JULIA BROOKE OSBORN
From "The Sapulpa Herald," Sapulpa, Oklahoma, April 13, 2004

"SAPULPA GIRL KILLED IN ACCIDENT"
By MATTHEW BROADDUS, Herald Managing Editor

A Sapulpa girl died in a three vehicle accident that occurred on the Turner Turnpike Sunday.

A statement from the Oklahoma Highway Patrol said Julia Brooke Osborn, 19, of Sapulpa, was killed in the accident that occurred at 6:34 p.m. Sunday at mile marker 157, westbound, in Oklahoma County.

Osborn was pronounced dead at the scene from massive injuries.

OHP records show that a 1997 Chevrolet Suburban, driven by Lyle Edwards Whisner, of Adel, Iowa, was approaching a construction zone traveling west bound in congested traffic when he changed lanes and hit Osborn's 2001 Ford Focus.

OHP Trooper D. L. Dowder said Osborn's vehicle went out of control hitting the trailer of a 2001 Kenworth Semi, driven by Stanley Lopez, of San Antonio, Texas, who was exiting to the off ramp leading to McDonald's.

Osborn was pinned for 10 minutes before she was freed by Wellston Firefighters, reports show.

Jason Howard, 19, of Kellyville, a passenger in Osborn's car, was treated at the scene for arm injuries and released.

No other injuries were reported.

Reports show that everyone was wearing a seatbelt.
