A mother and her young children whose lives ended tragically in a traffic accident leave behind a story that has not yet revealed itself to local authorities in search of answers.
What was Scherie Reynolds, 31, of Garland, Texas, doing on Larimer County Road 62 when her car was struck broadside by a pickup truck? The collision killed Reynolds and her two children, 9-year-old Halley and 7-year-old Sam.
How long the family had been in Colorado and whether they had relatives in the state also were among the questions that remained unanswered Tuesday in this story of young lives taken too soon.
"From what I understand, their intention was to move up here," Colorado State Patrol trooper Brett Mulnix said Tuesday after identifying Reynolds and her children as the three people killed in the accident north of Fort Collins.
Although family members in Texas had been notified of the deaths, Mulnix said it was unclear whether Reynolds and her children had been in Colorado for a few days or as long as a year. The family might have been staying with friends in Larimer County, but Mulnix was unable to confirm that Tuesday.
Reynolds and her children were westbound on County Road 62 in a 1997 Ford Escort around 12:40 p.m. Monday when the car was broadsided by a 2001 Ford pickup truck that was southbound on Colorado Highway 1. The pickup was driven by Ryan Berg, 28, of Wellington.
The State Patrol incorrectly reported Monday that the car broadsided the truck.
Investigators believe Reynolds might have run the stop sign and had entered the intersection when Berg's pickup struck the small station wagon.
Seat belts did not make a difference for Halley and Sam Reynolds, who died at the scene.
Scherie Reynolds, who also was buckled up, died at Poudre Valley Hospital Monday afternoon shortly after she arrived.
Berg was taken to Poudre Valley Hospital but was released Monday after being treated for minor injuries, Mulnix said.
The Larimer County Coroner's Office performed an autopsy on Scherie Reynold's body Tuesday afternoon, but results were not available Tuesday evening.
The State Patrol investigation into the crash is ongoing, and details about what happened and how fast the vehicles were traveling were not available Tuesday.
Attempts by the The Coloradoan to locate Reynolds' family member in Texas were unsuccessful. Berg also could not be reached for comment.
