Brian Mitchell Chambers was recently handed a 30-year sentence for manslaughter in Pawnee County District Court.
Chambers was originally charged with first degree murder, but the jury reduced the charge to manslaughter in connection with the death of his mother, Sondra Taylor, who lived in the lake area northwest of Mannford. He was alleged to have beaten her with a hammer 14 times and stabbed her 12 times with a steak knife.
The incident happened on April 3, 1982, after he asked his mother if he could attend a dance even though he had been told he was grounded. She apparently began screaming and hit her son, after which he beat her with a hammer and stabbed her. Taylor's body was taken and dumped in a nearby addition.
Although the verdict was appealed on nine grounds, the Court found that some minor errors were committed but none justified reversal of the jury findings and sentence.
Chambers was a student at Mannford High School at the time of the incident.
