The term "over the hill" usually applies jokingly to someone turning 40 years old, but Drumright resident, Mose G. Turner, who will be 100 years old, Sunday, January 26, 1986, is not "over the hill" yet!
Turner, who has been a widower for about five years, is very efficient in managing his home, cooking his meals and enjoys going to the Drumright Senior Citizen Center for fellowship.
Mr. Turner stopped driving an automobile a couple of years ago at age 98. He said "I still had a year and a half left on my drivers license, but my eyesight was getting a little bad, so I decided to quit." He went on to say "the car I owned first was a 1922 Model T Ford and the last one was a 1955 model."
When asked about the present days compared to the past ones, Mr. Turner stated, "There's such a sight of difference I couldn't begin."
The very witty Turner also told of his school days in Missouri where he studied geography, spelling and had to "go through five readers to get your education."
Turner, who grew up on a farm in Missour, married Delia Mae Hayes when she was 15 and he was 22. They moved to Drumright in 1920, where he worked for and later retired from Tydol Oil Refinery in 1954.
Mr. and Mrs. Turner's four children graduated from Drumright High School. They are James Floyd Turner of Tulsa, Velma Belle Davis, Ponca City and Karlene Mosell Marshall of Bartlesville. Another daughter, Luella Fern Thompson, who made her home in Ponca City, is deceased. Mr. Turner has a younger brother, Adam, who is 90 years old and lives in Missouri.
The family plans to be together in Drumright this Sunday to celebrate Turner's birthday.
Mr. Turner said he was planning to get a haircut for the event and stated "I told my son he better get a haircut too and also he should shave his beard."
When asked how old his son was, he replied, "75."
Drumright News Journal wishes Mr. Mose G. Turner a very happy 100th birthday and many more to come.
